This series seems like it could be fun, but I'm hesitant to pick up something done by Foxaholic - the last time I tried one of their releases, it was worse than MTL!

So, does the translation quality live up to my awful expectations, or can I give this a chance and hope to be pleasantly surprised?

 

For me it's decent, just need editor.

 

MTL is cancerous esp. Korean ones, so I'm willing to wait if there would be translator good enough to do it.

And this novel is worth the wait anyway. I'll just be patient with it.

 

This is the only Korean novel they're currently translating so it's a completely different kind of translation than what they do with the Chinese novels. It's much better than MTL but you should just read chapter 1 to see if the quality is on par with the other novels you read.
I know your concern because I tried reading some of the Korean translations done by Active Translations and they were all complete garbage even after they said they got an editor.

 

I apologize for that. I've tried to get an editor, but I couldn't find a reliable one willing to work for free. And understandably so. Although this novel has grown really fast in such a short time, so far, I've made...$30 after having translated 50 chapters, each ranging between 2500 words to as many as 3500 words. So hiring an editor at the moment is almost an impossibility, unless I'm somehow able to find a reliable one willing to freelance for the time being.

If you can't afford an editor at the moment then don't worry too much about it. The current translations might have a few mistakes but still have decent quality.

It's fine I already got MTL a few novels so your translation is already good.

 

$30 for 50 chapters doesn't seem like equivalent exchange. Hopefully you'll get the money you deserve and an editor in the future! This looks to be a really successful translation of a really good novel, it would be really unfair if you didn't. I'd pass a few bucks but I'm a little broke myself...

 

It is non-trivial to edit Korean novels.

1) You need a wiki. If you have multiple translators, the way they spell phonetically generated character names can change. As editor, your job is to maintain the same character names, because nothing throws off the reader more.
(for example, “Woohee”, is the correct character name for the fairy in KoftheB. “Ulhe” is what I got from the current translator)

2) Gender confusion is common. As well as plot confusion. Sometimes, it is hard to figure out who is doing what. (and what gender they are ) The only way to untangle that is to read preceding chapters, and extensive transliteration.

3) Transliterate, transliterate, transliterate!!! Because of the predicate-subject structure of Korean, extensive and careful rewriting is NECESSARY. Otherwise your readers will be nasty and insulting.

4) Editors are human. Using a Google docs is an easy way to collaborate. After your editing, have the translator check you work!!! Always.

 

Just to be clear, I'm fine with not receiving even a penny translating. One way or another, it's just a hobby. Also, I'll probably get some money from ads, but that's monthly and hasn't gone out yet. That's the only source other than ko-fi at the moment. Both of which are unreliable for someone new like me to use for an editor.

Anyways, I'll try to work hard on editing and proofreading it myself for the time being...though I'm not very good at either...do let me know if you see any mistakes while reading. I'd really appreciate it.
