God dammit, why don't some people put the lid back once delided.

Seriously, deling is easy.. I know, but your supposed to put the lid back... Once you delided, or use a some think called bare die guard.
    tb_image_share_1599773102548.jpg
    ...
Now, the correct way to delid is to
    First
    [IMG]
Once you delided, (this is soldered Tim BTW)
    Apply liquid metal.

    After liquid metal,
Apply the black oil or jelly that you just removed.
    Then apply the relider
    [IMG]
And wait for about 10 sec. Then remove the cpu.
    As if nothing have happened.

And for god sick, please put the lid back on with the black oils after you delided unless you plan on using a bare die with die guard. Unless you want to get your cpu killed.

Putting on the lid literally took only like 2 minutes...

As a person who knows next to nothing about computers I have no fucking idea what you've just shown me.

...I thought CPU cores were bigger. Is this a "pay no attention to the man behind the curtains" moment?

Most people even the experience don't put the lid back cause those black oil or jelly is disgusting, you will have the feeling of vomiting applying those. Hence many people including the experienced will just skip this step and just put the lid in the intel socket without applying the black oil or jelly.
Untill one point their cpu died and regret not doing so. Recently one of my friends killed his cpu... I was like, "I knew this day would come :) "

I have 0 ideas of what you're talking about, but the effort in that step-by-step picture is nice, and i like nice things :aww:

Is this for water cooling? I built my first PC in January and I was thinking about upgrading my motherboard to the new X570 Tomahawk, since it is better then my current one, and now i am worried if I have to do what you did.

Built my pc years ago, highly doubt I did this. Only issues I've had is needing to replace the case fans... and the side panel where my chair leg went through it in an unrelated forced alcohol induced slumber.... could cause issues? Maybe. Worth the time to fix? Not at all

This is me every time my brother takes his computer apart and tries to explain where everything goes and what it's supposed to do.

no this is for cpu, because intel puts terrible thermopaste the default cpu always gets hotter than it should, so if you delid and apply good thermopaste you can see quite good performance increase in the cpu.

Is the OP talking about thermal paste? I'm assuming that's what they mean by liquid metal? But then what's black oil or jelly???

Anyway, I thought it was a given that you always remove the old thermal paste and put a new layer on when removing the CPU heat sink/fan? Don't DIY computer guides state as much? That's how I learned initially. I'd like to know who's pulling apart computers without at least looking up guides on how to do it first... that's kinda terrifying if you ask me...

Doesn't water cooling use essentially the same heat sink system as traditional fans? I had to look this up just now to make sure, but I think I'm correct. Heat sinks for CPU and GPU, whether traditional fans or water systems or anything else, all use thermal paste. In which case, when removing a heat sink, removing the old thermal paste and putting on a new layer is also a must.

If clmbheat is replacing his motherboard that would also require removing the CPU's heatsink. He needs to remove the thermal paste and replace it with a new layer.

I've used the oil/jelly or whatever it is but it never struck me as nasty but some people are odd I guess.

Main thing is don't do the work unless you are gonna do it right cause no one likes trying to fix easily avoided screw ups as it makes the job harder and more time consuming at the least and sometimes makes complete replacement the only option.

No, that's pretty standard-sized. You might have been misled by the heatsinks and fans

you run in to that just about everywhere ... cars are notorious for the "simple fix" or "the cheap fix" that causes the next guy to all but go nuts to fix them afterwards, especially cars from back "in the day" when your lucky to find they actually have bolts and not chicken wire and plaster holding them together ... sadly I sware they do the same thing with the new ones from the factory (only it ain't chickenwire, but some little plastic part that costs thousands to replace lol). Computers came in second on that list around 2000 of the notorious "simple / cheap fix" list that can drive someone nuts... I now wonder if they finally beat cars in the last 20 years ...
