That's sooo true. I wish the Tutorial Is hard insert the girl story when MC actually get to at that point. I don't want any flashback then suddenly to the future. During that time yes I wouldn't mind a girl accompany MC. jdbdhdvdhhebdhdhdbs

    entertainment, now thats wide scope~
there comedy, drama, fap, fan service, intrigue etc~

clear genre or sub genre stuff~ when this cat read romance then this cat expect romance stuff, maybe with lil bit drama and spice.

different stuff mean different expectation, on general this cat have almost zero expectation on
    xuanhuan
    xianxia
kr game or litrpg or something similar

let give example on manga for how different stuff this cat have for entertainment
    to love ru, fan service~
ravages of the times, intrigue, military, but mostly political lol~
    for the roses, drama~
bunch of short shoujo which too many to count, romance mix various stuff.... duh~
seitokai yonde.... comedy mostly dirty one~
    hentai, pornhwa....fap~
red eyes, military plus sci fic~

    similar stuff goes to novel~
on published book if da summary suck then nope not buying~
on thing like NU read awhile then simply drop if this cat feel bored of it~

I like fluffy low drama romance. Preferably monogamy, but so long as it's fluffy I'll take what I can get.

Well it's seasonal thing, I might look for comedy at morning then totally get drawn to documentary at night.

But the long term I think edgy, dark, pessimistic stories... For example I don't remember the full name something like arifuraita, a group of children get transported to a fantasy world with no memories of their life... I won't spoil anything but it's unlike any other isekais, pretty dark and realistic plot..

Then it was goblin slayer, not for the gore brutality no, its the hero's human limits they never forget... It's like how a bounty hunter would really be like... Wits and experience matter most, and it's all about preparations..

Then I think it's the recent redo healer, and this I loved for pure gore, I mean the things they included was the true cruel and evil side humanity is capable, not sugar coated for pg13.. Its like watching a real dark instance happen.

Sometimes I just feel like watching otherworldly kind of amines.. Like Somali and the forest spirit, the restaurant in another world..

I'm looking forward for anything that can let me live through the story's world, be it fantasy or modern setting, basically escapism for me because I hate my own daily lives; But that require the story to be nicely written which is rather rare especially in fans-translations world. Heck, even some official translations done by professionals in licensed novels can be bad.

As for example of good writing (subjectively), I'd say shin sekai yori, adonis, lucia, early volumes of grimgar, martial arts master (yep, the one from webnovel), one step into the past, king's avatar, and many more that I can't recall on top of my head. Props to the translators as well. Those novels gave me emotional attachment to the characters and the world/setting itself, as if they are letting me live through it and I will be both very sad and happy everytime the story ended

I mostly look for a strong female potagonist who solves her problems without the help of ml. I also look for stories where the female potag is stronger than ml
example:- its not easy to be a man after travelling to the future(its on hiatus right now)

In novels, I prefer romance because it makes me want to see how the relationship progresses and how the couple would end up together. I also prefer it if translations are easy to read and that there is something engaging to it. However, in manhwas, manhuas, mangas stories, I use to only read romance exclusively, but now that is not just the genre I read. I now read any type of genre, which I am really happy about because I was able to find many different stories and plots!

haha, thank you! I find it interesting that there are different things and factors in a story that makes someone read it. For me, romance was one of the factors, and then would help me like different genres now :)

I'm looking for three main things in novels. The first and most important is good characterization. Good characters are compelling all by themselves and they'll make anything worth reading. Of course achieving this in your writing is very difficult to do and even the best writers will crash and burn. This doubly so when the writer is either experimenting or writing outside of the area of expertise.

The second thing is writing that can really spark the imagination. These are often books that manage to either tackle super interesting subjects or do something special with them. In a way this kind of book is even more uncommon than the first one and I've found that a lot of them will come with bad characterization. I'll still read this kind of novel but I'm a lot less happy doing so. However there are books that manage to do both and these are the ones that I'll read passages from over and over again.

Lastly, I'm big into cheap entertainment. Just give me something that's somewhat amusing and as long as the subject matter holds some promise. I'll even try books that I'm sure are going to be terrible. There's lots of examples here as this is pretty much the only reason why I read isekai (and isekai-adjacent). That said, "cheap entertainment" does sound like a pejorative, but I don't really mean it that way. It's just a way to refer to basic story mechanisms that I find appealing: something like dramatic irony.

For me its schadenfreude which could be as result of dramatic irony.

You did remind me that books must entertain first and foremost

I tend to find myself enjoying novels with the psychological genre the most. I love something that is complex, i don't really mind tropes but i truly appreciate stories that break tropes and try to bring something that feels original. It doesn't matter how many chapters the story has. I love stories that focus on it's story instead of pumping out endless filler. I like mind games, anti heroes, villains.

Well written villains always hold a special place it my heart. I dislike villains that exist for the sake of being evil. WE NEED A REASON WHY THEY'RE EVIL, they just can't suddenly decide to be evil, like for what?

Complex morally grey characters are my go-to type of characters. Also i quite enjoy tragedies and angst... :blobpopcorn_cool: Also stories that consistently keep going with good writing and keep bringing the plot forward instead of just suddenly stray away from the original story are a indicator of a good story, the author knows what they are actually writing. I don't mind minor plot holes.
