This is something I recently discovered. Look at the manhuas, mangas or novels with love triangles, harems or hero vs villain fictions.

The dark (mostly black) haired guy

    • Either loud+stubborn or the silent+strong type of one.
    • Tall and super handsome.
    • He's the hero or saviour
    • So he gets the girl!
    The blond or silver-haired guy
    • Either super sweet or mysterious type of one
    • Has an aristocratic or psycho look
    • He becomes obsessive and evil from the start or turns into one later.
    • He's just a long-lost brother, stepbrother, best friend or rival.
    • He may have this kind of ending;
      • He dies at the hands of the hero or the girl.
      • Sacrifice himself for the girl or her happiness (It means trying to save that hero).
      • Accepts the rejection and supports them.
I wonder what the basis of this trend is?:hmm:
    Can anyone tell me why?!:blobReach:

that's because dark hair from very dark brown to ravens wing black seems to be the most common hair color in the world, while the red colors are the rarest (out side of dyes) and not counting older folks going grey or bald ... oh and the blond verities are in the middle, think gray scale

Well, as racist as this may sound I believe the main reason is that most people in the asian continent have black hair and you would want your hero to be liked and more people would be able to identify themselves with the character if they share similarities. And the distinction between the protagonist and the antagonist may also be easier if they differ in their appearances and such a huge part as the hair color

Another reason, and this one is just purely subjective, is that black hair simply looks better than blonde or other exotic colored hair (on a dude). I at least, as a european dude with dirty blonde hair, definitely think that black hair looks just better.

Hope I am not offending anyone, but still getting my thoughts across ~~ none of what I said is really based on any facts it's just how I see it ~~

Well i could only assume as JP novels are asian.
They will have Black Hair as that’s what they will have p(unless they are mixed or a rare case).
So authors from Asia will mostly make a character that has some characteristics relating to them like hair color as someone cool, handsome and lovely.
As for blonde....Could only assume it’s just a tradition where blonde dude is either a good friend that likes to fight or a total jackass to the mc. As most delinquents in JP color their hair to blonde. As shown in some mangas and animes and shows
Silver? Don’t know. I only know they look cool in cool outfits that fits with their hair color.

Statistically, if they didn't, there would be more problems.

I mean, the majority of them has brown or black hair (unless it's abroad, isekai or whatever), so if they actually made an extreme minority get all the girls, that would get more bad comments about it.

In most of the Korean ones I read it's usually the silver/gold (etc.) who gets the girl but they do tend towards a European setting so....

Why is there no "no hair/bald" option? That bugs me.

But being a bit more serious, it's probably in part because it's Asia where a majority of the population has black hair. So I guess it's saying in a way, "Foreigners aren't as cool as us"? Though it usually comes down to they type of novel/manga/anime it is, where it's set (medieval Europe, Japan, USA, another world that looks like medieval Europe, did I already say medieval Europe?) and which romantic interest is shown first. Usually the first romantic interest wins... even if they are actually shit. The second lead syndrome is a thing, though that doesn't have anything to do with the topic lol.

Dark hair is considered better looking on men. I'm personally dissapointed when the MC has a different hair color. The rare occasion of blond or silver hair for the hero is for medieval fantasy settings, and the author has cliché of it in mind (often bad, the MC are then called Lionel Braveheart or whatever dumb trope name).
Light brown hair is too common so not MC-like, red hair is rarely considered as pretty/ noble looking.
I do not belive in the second male lead being blond and the like just as a trope, rather those guys need to be different from the MC hence the light hair color.

I like having the protagonist have a different color hair. Silver or white is a good one.

Black pisses me off, I'm sick of seeing and reading isekais where it's obviously a medieval Europe setting yet the MC has the generic Kirito look instead of the actual historical blond/brown/ginger hair, or for girls where it's the generic Japanese girl look with long black hair.

When I see a Kirito looking protagonist, it's an instant drop for me. It's obvious from that alone it's going to be one of those type novels where it's a generic dense dumbass AF MC with no actual personality, obsessed with Japanese food and Japan in general (in the case of isekai) and somehow has knowledge of everything with rich helpings of plot armor and infinite luck, with their dumbness

I liked Tokyo Ghoul's take on the hair concept, same with Arifureta (to reflect their personality/mental state etc).

Although the harem and the reversal of his personality (making him dumber instead of being intelligent like he was in the beginning) in Arifureta ruined that novel for me :(

Black hair wouldn't be as bad if they decided to switch it up and make the character look different, but no they all seem to look like a clone of Kirito.

Full metal Alchemist disagrees with you.
Same with all the shojo stories with bad boys dying their hair a different color and getting the girl.
On you preferring black hair, it is simply a case of the grass being greener on the other side

I prefer guys with any other color but blond, but that's just personal preference and experience talking. I grew up in So Cal and well over half the guys in my HS class were sandy to white blond and most were a big bag of d*cks, so I associate "blond" with "arrogant a**hole" now.
as for manga and novels, the writers are Asian so dark hair is kind of expected to fit with the Asian aesthetics.

Despite the cultural differences, it's particularly interesting to see it in many western romance novels as well.

Maybe before Peach Girl, that was true
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peach_Girl

Have you all been living under a rock?

    https://www.anime-planet.com/manga/hajimete-koi-o-shita-hi-ni-yomu-hanashi

Kuroko from Kuroko no Basket is certainly not black haired.

Not too sure about 1980s anime since the hair color can be due to crappy video quality.
Just like how I thought they was break dancing in Fist of Northern Star opening.

What about Slam Dunk? Was his hair black?

Yes, I know multiple hair colors usually helps to differentiate male characters all these pseudo Yaoi-Shonen for Fujoshis.

I don't really watch anime anymore unless there is a drama adaptation.
But even Naruto was blond. Although, I guess you can argue that black-haired Sasuke got the girl.

Goku is technically blond or blue haired too right?

Maybe you all claiming black hair eye came from a time machine from the 1980s.

I did a little search for Black Clover since I don't watch it and Asta is blond too.
So I ask again, why do you all keep saying black hair is standard when it's not?

Even Haikyu!! . Yes, I know its another fujoshi example but I recall a few Gundam stories that qualify like the disturbing Gundam Seed.
    Child porn isn't fun assholes!!

Back on topic, in anime like Gundam 00 and Dragon Ball Z, a different color than black is seen as a form of a better evolution

Maybe Japanese are fed up with conformity in their society.
    Shocking!! Right?

Black is more manly. That's why even natural blond, Western actors would dye their hair black. It also looks more serious, probably because of the BoyBand/Pop Artists popularizing blonde/frosted tips. Giving the blonde/colored hairs a boyish notion.
