The main reasons I dislike this genre are: 1) Often you have a completely straight dude turning into a woman. If it was someone who wanted that or at least was considering, I would not mind (It might even be interesting to see the journey of transitioning if the character originally wanted it). If that crap happened in real life to some straight guy, many would literally off themselves after some time, so that makes me hate it. 2) Feels like some male authors who have no idea how to write realistic female character choose this way so the character can have a "male-like" personality and make their job easier. If you can't write the main character who is a female just write about the male one. 3) I am annoyed right now because I searched some new stories on scribblehub to read and too many of them had a gender-bender tag, so I made this thread to whine.

You do realize crossdressing novels also fall under Gender Bender, right?

I do not hate all of them. Just the ones that my reasons apply to...and there are a lot of such stories/mangas.

    What's that?

IMO, that's not hating the genre then. But I guess everyone has different interpretations of things.

I assume it stands for Scribble Hub Forum.

I do avoid them at this point, but the ones I've tried were like that. If too many are like that in the whole genre...they do represent it.
I did not know scribblehub had a forum :D

Oh, I see. I was just curious haha. Some active people in NUF right now came from SHF.

it stands for Scribblehub Forum. Same owner as NUF so even if I don't visit there, I heard of it before.

That's what annoyed me...I just clicked the former hero tag...did not bother to switch off a bunch of genres in the filter because there were not that many stories but sooo many among them were gender-bender it made me annoyed. Also, reasons 1 and 2 still made me dislike it even before(especially reason 1), today I was just reminded of that and annoyed.

I came to dislike them too. Years ago, when I was a naive young reader I had a hope that they might work but now that hope is dead. I do not remember any harem that made the story better...they usually make it worse.

honestly the mentality of the main characters in harem story are what broke them for me. like ugh, it's like the author is projecting and it makes me want to vomit

For me, it's also unrealistic behavior of female characters and the stories often become just pure smut/hentai while the author forgets the main plot.

There’s plenty of stories about female to male genderbending. There’s also some male to female genderbending stories written by women to serve as Fujoshi bait. (When I say “stories,” I’m also including other forms of media, such as manga, etc.) Guess you were just unlucky on the ones you got.

One of the things that make me dislike some fantasy novels is unrealistic behaviors. While fantasy is fantasy, humans are still humans. The fact that some characters are not horrified/even suicidal after going through gender-bender against their wishes is a huge minus for me(if they wished it then it's ok).

    Not hate. Just uninterested.

They would be horrified, sure. Suicidal? Probable. But you should take into account how the prime instinct for survival works for humans. It does leave a bitter taste when they don't address a certain change enough though.

en en! they don't ever show any changes with the character's mentality/personality and it just makes me angry... and it would have been interesting as well if they showed it *sighs*

Yeah, it would change them A LOT.

Yep, would make it much more realistic. Showing the whole mental anguish and struggle might make it much better.

Do you guys all have such heavy attachment to your biological sex? I dunno, if I became a guy, and everything else was the same, I don't think I'd care too much except about the inconveniences it would bring. Not to mention it's usually done by some unmentioned higher power that I certainly can't get revenge on. I definitely would not be suicidal just because of the sex change.

Well, maybe if it actually happened I'd be more worried, but it's not like being transported or transmigrating into another world without warning is somehow less upsetting. Especially if I was still living a normal life before that.
