Swordsmanship requires a higher dexterity than archery.
Archery requires a higher strength than swordsmanship.

I already knew that, I watched this video about how Orcs would make the best fantasy archers because their tremendous draw strength would have allowed them to shoot way further than other races.

I realized this once when I was thinking about why bows are better in a fantasy world compared to guns.... Theoretically, the amount of force you can generate out of a bow (As long as it doesn't break, but that's why you have fantasy materials) is only limited by your strength, but guns are limited by the gunpowder and mechanism.

That depends, though. Maybe in an army, where you only need to shoot in the general direction of the enemy troops, they'd make good archers. But in terms of hunting or solo combat, you need good dynamic vision and dexterity too, which is why elves are more dubbed as fantasy archers (they're mostly hunters too).

depends what you call swordsmanship and what you call archery
lifting and swing a two-hander requires more strength than drawing a small bow to hit a target 20m way
while the comparison is reverse for a rapier vs greatbow

this is all also without considering that for things that you need more strength to wield you would also need greater dexterity to wield proficiently

and don't get me started in endurance/stamina.
those heavy bows that require great strength to use, would be fired at most once/twice a day at full strength while, no one would wield a sword that they themselves could only swing once a day

    *teleporting onee-sama noises*

Not exactly, I mean if the material of your bow is unbreakable - your gun can be made unbreakablle too and thus can support way way more gunpowder or better chemicals.

Then again so can shields to stop the pesky range attacks...

I mean, finding better chemicals to do it needs lot better tech. Becoming physically stronger is usually par course in such novels. And needing to find better chemicals means that you can't just copy earth's gunpowder recipe and expect it to do just as well in that world too.

If we already have fantasy metal, just use magic to fire off the bullet. Compress Megumin’s explosion into the barrel and send the bullet flying off to pierce the heavens.

I mean.... if you're going that far then why not shoot the magic directly at the person instead? And it's no longer a normal gun if you start using magic anyway.

I guess the weak looking elves that are know for dexterity are actually very strong. Go figure. Lol

I was just about to say the same thing

    I totally agree.
It depends on the swordsmanship style. For instance. Fencing with rapiers takes a lot of dexterity. While Roman style gladius we’re only designed with one or two different swings in mind.
Than you have compound bows and crossbows. With mechanical advantage the strength issue becomes less pronounced.
You can’t just say all bows and all swordsmanship we’re this way. That blanket answer miss certain things

Spears need INT. Because you need to be smart and choose spears instead of choosing swords just because they're cool.
Axes are used if you're poor as economy weapons because they need less metal. And of course, pure violence.
Hammers need WIS because you'd have to realise it's easier to deal damage to armoured soldiers by smashing rather than cutting.
