You're definitely right that this game can end up extremely unbalanced. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: But I think it's good to risk it.

I think standard battleship is kind of boring, which was why I wanted some kind of twist for something that is harder and takes more careful planning. >.<

It doesn't look like we'll be implementing the vassal mechanic. I was only going to put it in if there was a lot of support for it, but the votes are too split for it to look favorable. The vassal mechanic was a huge wild card, and maybe isn't fair if some players end up with vassals and others don't.

I think it'll end up being some kind of a restocking system in the end (the details can vary).

This sounds fair! I think I might set the maximum duration of a game to 24 hours. If nobody retreats or wins or loses by the end of that period, the winner is the player who dealt the most damage. (Sunk ship = 10 points, hit = 1 point)

If it's a tie at 24 hours, instant-death (1 hit to end the match).

The bracket system is something to discuss and consider.

I also recognized that the top bracket will have 1-3 players, most likely. However, it's not possible to enter the top racket by retreating. You'd have to go all in. 10 ships spread across 3 battles makes it risky. If they managed to go 3-0 and they're the only one left in Gold Sea, then they deserved that win.

There might even be nobody with a 3-0 record. In which case Gold Sea would be 2-1, Silver Sea would be 1-2, and Bronze would be 0-3.

    -----------------

I think another system I would be willing to consider is a double elimination bracket for the second phase of the tournament.

Number of slots be have half the total number of combatants. (For 16 total players, 8 slots), and it would be seeded by players who had the top scores in the first phase.

    This is probably simpler...

The thing to consider is that with permanently sunk ships, it should be expected that players with more retreats should have more ships left over than players who fought to a win... possibly. Therefore a 1-2 might be favored against a 3-0.

Initial setup is private PM with GM.
Game play is group PM with all three people in the thread (2 players, 1 GM). GM is only present to verify either player isn't cheating.

I think I've decided that it's simplest to use:

    16 player tournament.

Tournament Stage 1 (4 Group Stage) - Round Robin (3 matches for everyone)
4 players per group, 2 players advance per group.
24-hour matches, can draw. FIFA rules for group-stage ties (5pts for sunk ship, 1pt per damage).
    It's no longer pick-your-own opponent because I've started to become paranoid about clones participating ^^;

Tournament Stage 2 (Elimination Stage) - Double Elimination - 8 contestants (4 matches to win)
    Sudden-death rules after 24 hours.
Replenish 8 of the same ships for all contestants. (2x aircraft carrier, 2x battleship, 3x cruiser, 1x destroyer)
    Prizes for 1st 2nd 3rd place.

I'm also going to add myself to the player list temporarily to help reach 16 -- if I end up playing, I'll need someone else to GM the games that I play.

    Revised tournament rules again!

The key thing changed was match scoring rules during the Group Stage:

Win-Loss ratio is the primary tool for determining who is "top two".

We will use aggregate score across all matches to break ties.

    Match points are determined by:
    1. sunk enemy ship = 10pt
    2. each damage dealt = 2pt
    4. penalty for exceeding turn time = -5pt
    3. each turn played = +1pt to each player in match

The rationale for this rule change was that there is an advantage to players who make as few moves as possible during the group stage in order to conserve ships.

Originally the turn time limit was put in place so that a player cannot delay forever.

In this change, each player will gain 1 point for every turn that they play. This way, players are incentivized to be more active (even though they risk losing more ships by playing more turns), because a player will be disadvantaged in their group if they intentionally try to make the match progress as slow as possible.

Hello! Today is the 13th, which was the day this tournament is supposed to start, means we need to do some scrambling in order to figure out how this is going to work. Currently we have 11 registered players, but the tournament needs exactly 8, 12 or 16 players to start (8 and 16 are preferred).

    This means:
    1. Find some friends to play with us.
    2. If you don't really mind not playing, you can offer to be on the sidelines if we end up dropping players.
For me personally, I definitely don't mind not playing, so we're currently at 10-11 players.

Tagging the Jan-Ken-Pon crowd! (I hope you all don't mind the mass tag!)

    @ABMAINA @Alchyr @Anon Ymous @brasca123 @Chocol8 @Das @Elion @fluffymigs @GM_Rusaku @GonZ555 @Ishmael @Lady Luck @Laksha @Little Dragon @Milanin @NZPIEFACE @Pythagoras Theorem @RRL Vocaloid @Ruyi @SimplyAShadow @Slikrapids @Solus @sufod01 @ThunderGod @Zone Q11

The prizes in this tournament are bigger than Jan-Ken-Pon:
    • First Place: $1250
    • Second Place: $500
    • Third Place: $300
Battleship as a game is also really simple and depends on luck! So if you like playing lucky games and winning lots of money for nothing, this is might be a game that you like!

Lol. I'm already in the game but I got tagged again. Does that mean I can play as two people?

Jokes aside. If we decide to go for the eight, then I don't mind dropping out. I'll sacrifice myself >< since I'm not really sure about playing it well. I'm just in it for the fun~

Uh... sorry @villain, I don't think this game is for me. I like the game, but not when I can't see where my ships are.

We're now at 7-14 players! I'll give this a couple more hours to see if we can reach 16, and if not we'll start with 12!
