I don't have a novel in mind right now, but I would give a special mention to the Korean webtoon Kubera.

The author is a sadist. Nearly all the characters are miserable, and they are all miserable in different ways. There is such a sheer originality in misery, you're baffled by how she comes up with all these situations. And if the 'quality' of misery isn't enough, the author piles on the quantity too.

It's a series which makes dying look like the happy outcome. There are moments where it literally sucks the joy out of you.

The ironic thing is that it tricks you at first by making you think it's a comedy.

Book of the Malazan Fallen (series) by Steven Erikson - It's a vast epic with great parts, awesome story and extremely depressing when looking how human nature is reflected so truly and naturally, in an unnatural world.

The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever - truly depressing in so many ways. A series of books where so little happens within all the words written, but it is absolutely enthralling in how dreary it is.

World of Cultivation - cause I read till the ending....

    Little match girl
    Gomen ne, onii-sama
Shuumatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Isogashii desu ka? Sukutte Moratte Ii desu ka?
    Mulberry song
    Three days of happiness
    Lament at changmen palace
    Ballad of ten thousand gu
I want to eat your pancreas
    Lemon incest

This is in no particular order, but Mulberry song, ballad of ten thousand gu, and lament at changmen palace is especially heart wrenching. Finishing each of these novels made me sink into depression for a day each. "Gomen ne, onii-sama" was also heart wrenching as hell, not because of an intense bad thing happening to her (the protagonist), but because her sense of self-sacrifice is just too much. Like, damn.
Lemon incest is no.1 depression for me, though. Its realism hits home, the ending was just the rotten cherry on top.

Aside from Kino no tabi, those novels are pretty "happy," as a whole, right?

Edit: ah, shit. Just realised this post was made around 2-3 years ago.
