I'm deciding of either upgrading my ram to 8gb or to wait and hope my pc can handle another ~1-2 years before I get a new one. My current specs are g630 gtx 550ti ram 1x4gb 1066/1333Mhz psu 430W Edit: FYI I have this pc for around 5 years now
PCs are getting better and better, and the prices for decent PCs are good. Wait. Save up. Better than putting your money into an older model, delaying the time until you can pay for a new one. That is, of course, unless there is an immediate need for more RAM. If it's obvious that you more RAM would reduce a lot of problems that you have, more RAM now would ve the better option.
I'd say get a new one. The "standard" nowadays is pretty good and the price is decent. Or you can be like me, still using a 8 years old pc
IMO another 4gb 1333Mhz RAM should run you about 30$? I'd go for it. Edit: (especially since when you do upgrade, if you built it yourself, you can just carry the RAM over.) -Only if you use another outdated motherboard, as your PC is 5 years old you're probably using DDR3, not DDR4 as pointed out by another user. DDR5 is announced for 2018, so wait unless 30$ isn't that much for you. Edit: Do take care that the RAM you get is compatible with the one you have atm if you slot both of them. Ideally you want to get the same one.
Ram is cheap. Go get you some. A new PC(decent) would be anywhere from 700-1100 depending on bells and whistles. Not like you can spend that much on ram....
if you need t, buy one now. ram ports are ever changing - so ram 2 years from now might not fit your port. also, if you're running windows 7 at 32-bit, it might not detect more than the 4gb of ram.
It depends on how often you use it and for what If you play often then I recommend to buy more ram and buy/build a new PC in a couple of years. If it's just for work/study and play older games then don't buy more ram
While more ram helps, running a pentium is harsh. I would spend the money on a new processor and memory. I don't know what your funds look like though $US 400 might be right out. if I'm reading right, DDR3/1333, 4 GB would be about US$30. So if thats the case, it may work to spend the money there. The fastest speed upgrade for me was to move to a SSD, but thats a bit of money, about US$100 for a little one.
What do you use the PC for? Generally the best upgrade a person can do is buy an SSD. You can even move the SSD to another PC if you buy in the future. The benefits of SSD far outweigh anything else. On top of that, the difference between HDD and SSD is like 10X while difference between worst SSD and best SSD is only 2X. Aka, even if new SSD technology comes out, it would make little difference compared to the upgrade you get from SSD now. Edit: just wanted to add that once your PC runs out of RAM, it goes into your pagepool aka your HDD to act as virtual ram. SSD would help even when you are low on ram.
Wait for a new comp. G630 is at the end of it's useful life. 2 core 2.7ghz isn't going to cut it for any newish games or calculatve programs. And its socket is obsolete so you can't really upgrade it. Also for that generation of motherboard I doubt you can run ddr4 sticks. Moving on, the 550ti is the best of chips binned good enough for sale but not good enough for the 560 bracket. It will bottleneck you just as much as the cpu, and any upgrades in that area will shove you above your power supply' s limit. The comp I just replaced for myself was similar. There comes a point where upgrading one part means you need a new system, and you've reached it.
True, if when he upgrades in a few years he switches to a motherboard with the newest specs DDR5 SDRAM should be out by then (announced to be released sometime 2018 currently). Hmm... I guess with that in mind, maybe wait a bit after all if you're hurting for money right now?
Fair enough! Didn't take the 5 year old thing into account... and as Glaurung made me remember, DDR5 is scheduled for 2018, so maybe wait a bit after all?
