It’s not everyday that a translator brings to us a novel related to her professional work, and we’re incredibly excited today to welcome the Bone Painting Coroner translated by Grenn, written by Li Duo Wu!

This is most definitely a novel off the beaten path, as we follow the story of forensic anthropologist transmigrating into the past, and not becoming the usual scheme-tastic MC who tramples all over her enemies, but rather gets embroiled into unsolved crimes and cases. But of course, there’s some romance involved. It wouldn’t be a proper transmigration novel otherwise. :D Grenn is actually a healthcare worker, so the translations with regards to the technical details in this novel definitely benefit from her professional knowledge. The other volare translators have learned quite a bit from her and BPC in this regard!

    From the novel itself:

In the 21st century, she was the outstanding world renowned darling of the field of archeology. Then, she transmigrated and became Jinjiang city’s Ji Family’ Third Miss, a small malnourished girl who starved to death. She was unfavored by her father and treated like air by the rest. Therefore, just to earn money and feed herself she had to return to her old profession – being a forensic anthropologist.

With a pair of dextrous hands, she stroked and examined those clickety white bones to solve old and dusty unresolved cases.

He was a handsome cold prince. Just to see the beauty smile, he would not hesitate to throw away his moral principles and repeatedly flirt with her.

In the end, he only received a supercilious look from her, as she declared “Prince, one touch is a 1,000 taels.”

“Then, this prince will give you 10,000 taels for a kiss!”

Grenn has 15 chapters queued up today, and will be releasing at an accelerated pace for the next two weeks. The schedule will settle down at 5 chapters per week for now. Please join me in a warm welcome for Grenn and BPC!

    Bone Painting?

Literal translation of Chinese title 画骨女仵作 sounds weird. Chinese often use conceptual images as "adjectives" which are not easily conveyed in the English language. The meaning and implication are often lost in translation.

My impression of 画骨女仵作 is that of a coroner who is a maestro or a dazzling expert in investigation, i.e. she can see "bones as paintings" or use "bones to paint" (i.e. flesh out stories). Hence, my choice of title would have been Forensic (Female/Lady) Coroner.

I assume that the heroine uses the skills from her previous occupation as a forensic anthropologist (as described in the synopsis).

I am probably wrong, of course...

This title translation provoked quite a discussion before release, I can tell you that! XD The main crux of the issue is that the MC actually creates paintings based off of the bones, and that her artistic skills play quite a great deal into the story. Hence something about painting/this art really needed to make it into the title.
