Personally, it's not to my tastes, but it is made by Wildbow, who is a very respected web serial writer, and is also doing Twig, which I do like.

But on a wider scale (I guess you can say), it did introduce me to the much more western, oft 'superhero-y' webnovels, such as superhero web-fic Superpowereds and sci-fi web-fic Two Worlds, both of which I LOVE, and other english webnoels which are not xianxia/xuanhuan inspired

Worm is important. It came from nowhere with none of the 'polish' magazine-run serials used to have, established a huge readerbase, and explored some themes pop culture is still just 'catching up' on, with nearly 1.7 million words worth of content. The pace he is something that tripled mine (even at my best) the novel effectively revived western webnovels when the already-faltering webcomics were on their deathbed. While Royalroadl has roots in translated novels, praise be, almost all of the participants have at least heard of Worm, if not completed it.
Whether something 1.7 million words can be good, and it'd take as many to go in depth any analyze it. Long story short, I personally think it's both fantastic and inspiring, capable of hitting on:
    • Legitimate Sci-Fi
    • Contemporary social issues (without preaching!)
    • Characters that vary in shade and stripe, usually a dismal grey, without being 'too complex to understand' or 'too simple to relate to/like'
    • Superheroes
    • Superpowers, and why they aren't the same as Superheroes
    • Horror in a world where everyone should be able to fight the things that go bump in the night. Emphasis on should.
That's just the story's accolades, though. I seriously enjoyed it just as a read, especially after the first few hundred chapters. It's the sort of thing that really takes a life of its own, and Wildbow has said as much himself.
To make that even shorter? Yes. Worm is important no matter how you cut it, but I think it's a good story, too.

Hey man, the line was pretty vague. I didn't know there was a novel called "Worm" and assumed it was something else.

Dayfinder has summed it up well...
All I'll say is that worm is the Cooling Dragon of western web novels. It's something which many of us have read.

Now the world building and character building is top notch. The MC comes out as sooo insecure initially and the growth she sees is relatable. Since its a superhero book, it has many different types of powers.. And I expected the generic templates for the same. But I was pleasantly surprised. The MC's power is totally not MC like while the sheer variety of technology based powers is well thought out. I really liked it.

Also it deals with a range of issues like alienation, social anxiety, bullying and marginalization. In short, it's pretty emo based. However it has strong fight scenes. So it balances the two pretty well...

Did I mention that there is minimal plot armour? Important characters DO die...

All in all, worm is the gateway and one of the strongest English web novel there. And one of my favourites.

It's really good and the story is quite epic but it's a parody of the usual superhero genre stuck in grimdark territory. Don't read it if you happen to be depressed.

    It's not a parody... rather it's a critique.

And definitely don't read if you are depressed

True. Rather than a parody, it's more like a subversion of all the normal superhero tropes. I can't say much that others haven't said without spoiling stuff, so I'll leave it there.

Worm has some of the most creative power sets I've seen and very creative ways of applying them.

Please reconsider. This world is blessed despite all its darkness. It's rare to have a chance to live in it.
