Why Asian Dramas Are so Popular

Hmm. There's a clear distinction between fiction and reality. No one is actually hoping for some rich chaebol to sweep them off their feet. If you drop Asian dramas because of these tropes, that's fine - but there's no need to climb onto your high horse while you do it. I mean, when I read a Western romance novel called the Billionaire Secretary's Baby or something, I accept that it's a cracky romance novel, there's no need to go on and write an article about patriarchy and abuse in Western culture.

Plus, all the wrist grabs and bug-eyed first kisses in K-Dramas especially are so obviously choreographed it's comedic. Asian dramas are full of exaggerated, over-the-top, ridiculous situations, and that includes their characters and plots.

 

I agree it is the female equivalent of porn. Hence why Fifty Shades is so commercially successful.
It is living vicariously, fulfilling a fantasy that many don't actually want to be their reality.
I thought I was more feminine than most guys since I grew up on Harlequin books but I found most of them hard to watch.
@insteadofdeath Stating my preference is not being on a high horse. You should probably read the article. It is stating that the dramas could do without such clichés. It is not saying those who watch it are inferior

EVERYTHING SHOULD OCCUR ACCORDING TO MY AND ONLY MY INTERPRETATION! ANYTHING THAT CONTRADICTS MY VIEW IS HERETIC/INFIDEL/UNBELIEVER/COMMUNIST/FEMINAZY/LIBERAL/PRIMITIVE/*insert other CAPSLOCK word here*!!!!
So basically, every story must be happened or progressed according to their desire or want. If the author writes otherwise, prepare for the salt storm......

I would like to point out that the one who wrote the article i linked is a man
His main points were this
1) The man should be dominating over the woman this can be seen in most Cool guy main characters from James Bond, Han Solo, and Zorro. The acting of asking for permission shows weakness as it shows that you are incapable of taking control. If you get married or something like that and you friends ask you to go drinking and if your response would be " Let me ask my wife" your friends would mock you with " Well now we know wears the pants in this family" or "grow a pair" . It shows weakness instead of what it really is . an individual making a decision with his partner

2) the world stokes your hunger so to speak - this doesn't just apply to men but also to women. sex sells and if you are a guy and you don't have sex you are a loser. you can get ads from AXE or swimsuit commercial or beer commercials or even commercials about cars. anything that is remotely about male masculinity or what it means to be man will have a scantily clad sexy model involved in it.

 

That's not the point of the article. Just pointing out how out of touch with reality some situations in dramas are. Like banging someone against a fridge. Or the wrist thing, actresses have actually complained about bruises.
The whole feminazi and saying opposing arguments are calling for censorship is overkill.
The point is that just the way porn objectifies women. You could argue that drama (female porn) objectifies relationships.
At least that is my take on it.

It's a story... I don't expect it to conform with reality... After all, it's just a fiction.
If I want to watch a reality drama I can always head to hospital and watch how a real drama unfold...... (usually sad end)

 

Yeah it's a story but it should have enough realism to not ruin immersion.
I have watched some dramas in which wrist grabbing and others caused actual bruising. Made for a fun conversation lol.

and if I remember it correctly beside teen~ housewives and housemaid/servant who love watch drama~
for da gossip such kind of story is way better~

My point is that we are all closet masochist who want to be hit but we don't like bruising so we watch dramas.

You mean East Asian dramas right? Because I can't imagine our Filipino dramas being popular. There is just this template of "girl meets rich(or something out of her league) guy and rich guy's mother doesn't like plebs so through hard work, dedication and LOVE, our heroine will win the day, plus some side characters you may forget if you wish." After the template comes, "Who are the most popular actors/actresses today?" After that, pile up decades of piled up cliches and let the masses eat it like flies on shit. (sorry not sorry to my countrymen lel, I want more Heneral Luna to be honest). *Rinse and Repeat* *Add some stuff here just to say you are different*
