From what you've said it looks to me that you're insecure, you probably wait around, hoping someone will pick you when it’s time to pair up.

You should not judge someone with just looks, performance, and intelligence in school. Because the group activities are made to not just compete and emerge that you're the fcking best but it is formed to communicate with others. It's team work and you don't do something alone, you discuss it with your partner even if the outcome is not that good, just because you feel that the other party is useless because what comes out of it was you being stereotypical person.

What if instead of waiting, you picked someone yourself? What if instead of being prideful and you feel like you're the f*cking best in the group, walked right up to the person you want to be grouped with?

Seriously mate, this is still the first month of your school? There's no reason to make an enemy is it? I'm not trying to tell you to play nice with everybody, but first thing you need to do in socializing with other people is be nice and give them a good impression first.

But at the same time, you also should look at the attitude of other people, whether they are worth for you to be nice or not. If they are arrogant jerk, then there's no reason to play nice at the early game. But if you still clueless about the other people character, then it's better to give them a good impression about yourself first.

Who knows, maybe they will give you a helping hand in the future. You can't survive in this world alone. Wait 2 to 3 months. When you see that they character are not that good, then you don't have to be nice to them anymore.
