Ive Been wondering, aren't orcs supposed be pig faced with a fat human body? Then what's up with PTO

It's same with Kobold, japan version is half dog half human, but western version half lizard half human same as lizardman.

 

LOR orcs are more like giant goblins.

I think when most people think orc they think "Warcraft" like ORC or pig type orc. They at the very least don't look like bigger goblins.

 

nah, they are the same. Same race different society. The fat one is the nerd. Living in the virtual world. While the muscular one is an athlete, living in a gym.

Actualy the real orcs are the western ones.
The first orcs were dated in the european mithology they came from there, if i'm correct.
Japan just did what Its best on... Take something and change to a more cute one.
Btw the real orcs are the likes from WoW... The ones from LOTR don't look like real orcs lol

When Tolkien wrote LOTR, orc and goblin meant the same thing. So, though they've kind of drifted into being two separate entities in fiction (gotta have lots of names for monster-type humanoids after all), having orcs be bigger, buffer goblins makes a lot of sense.

I believe this japanese version comes from the 1st edition of D&D when it reached Japan. Orc were described with pig heads there, and Tolkien's Orcs also were rather pig-ish, too, supported by the fact that in Welsh Orc=Pig/Boar, and it was a big inspiration for Tolkien.

Same could be said about their elves and kobolds, actually. In particular, Kobolds were described as having dog head there.

This first image probably just stuck on them. Warcraft Orcs, actually, are the revisionist ones.

 

They were always 2 different entities. Tolkien just merged them both into goblinoids, but they were never such before. So more accurately LOTR's interpretation of ORCs simply didn't stick.

Overall though while western fantasy followed LOTR's interpretations, eastern fantasy did not. So I find it silly when people use LOTR as a basis for eastern fantasy.

So, the word 'Orc' was first used by Tolkien and his description of them was based on goblins but more 'evil' while the name was derived from the story Beowulf where a race was called orcnaeus. So any 'orc' that does not match a Tolkien orc is a modified orc. So Warhammer, Warcraft, Japanese, etc. Orcs are all modified orcs. In the case of PTO, it is likely based on the Warcraft Orc since WoW is a huge game in China and other Eastern countries. Since many novels and games use modified orcs it is up to each author how they look. Different authors have elves as either taller than humans or very very short and tiny. So there is not a universal image of Orcs unless you want to use the original image of Orcs which came from Tolkien, in which case, the orcs in PTO and the pig faced orcs do not match.
