After investigating various clans from the former Suli clan's previous territories, Sun Jin had come to a conclusion.

None of them had a solid reason to hire cultivators.

Yes, there were many, many minor immortal cultivator sects, and yes, these sects took money to get rid of monsters and sometimes people, but cultivators were more expensive than normal martial arts sects from the Jianghu, as they were far more likely to accept payment in people which could be recruited into their sects, people who had the proper physiologies to be used as furnaces or cauldrons, techniques from ancestors or artifacts.

The thing was, in the eyes of the named other clans that had been its rivals centuries ago, the Suli clan had become sedentary, gentlefolk without real ambition or dangerous talent.

What would the point be in hiring hideously expensive cultivators, if the targeted house had basically lost its tripod's two strong legs, no known valuable cultivation treasures, no known real political leverage, no blackmail...

As for what it did have... It had a pair of spendthrift young masters who were inevitably going to bleed money like water, none of the existing heirs were going to amount to more than a xiucai, and for all that it had loyal servants, it certainly didn't have the kind of power and standing that could poke the higher ranked peoples' inverse scales.

For crying out loud, by those clans' own words, about the only thing it did have was a single strong pillar in the Count, and a lot of beauties of both genders, since the spendthrift brothers shu had basically taken home beautiful courtesans who bore them children.

Its lands were good, yes, but the Murong clan alone had many branches with more and had spread out over more territory. They were offended to be suspected.

The other clans all had better military forces and reputations.

That left the maidens who had married out and their families, descendants who had claimed the uncursed land. Even if a pure descendant of the Suli were to show up today, they would likely only get the cursed lands, as the rest had already been partitioned off.

As for cultivators...The feng shui didn't even place this estate or the surrounding lands on any dragon veins or spiritual strongholds or strong points of yin or yang energy.

And yet everyone agreed the place was now cursed, just after the clan had been exterminated.

What the hell was going on?!

Based on the evidence, it couldn't be tribal politics among the ennobled tribal lords. The other tribes had prospered more after throwing in with the Empire or been wiped out during the original conquest.

This meant some guy with a personal grudge.

By checking the evidence by every way short of breaking into people's houses, or actually going back to the supposedly cursed ground, Sun Jin had come to a few hypotheses.

One, perhaps the fight had been started when a cultivator desired a beauty and for whatever reason, could not have them. They could have gotten their sect mates to go after them.

Two, maybe someone in the household offended a sect member with disrespect or whatever that had pissed any notoriously thin skinned cultivator off and the cultivator did the same thing.

Three, maybe there had been some kind of hidden treasure. The only way to learn about those would be to dig up and investigate all the buildings and land on the actual supposedly cursed but definitely inhabited estate.

Sun Jin already had to put up arrays for his own protection, okay, he was going to need more firepower before digging around further.

Naturally, this day after all his investigation was done, as Daomei sat beside him, he had pulled out papers, brushes, stamps and inks to make more talismans.

Goodnaturedly, Daomei poured the water onto the inkstone and then began to grind the inks for him without even asking, since they were now quite comfortable and familiar with each other.

Having traveled with him all this time, naturally Daomei knew what talismans he liked to use and his comfortable placement of items he used most often with the seal stamps he liked best.

While Sun Jin was making enough light and electricity talismans to fry an army fueled by well deserved paranoia, a certain disguised person was inspecting the defensive array.

It was a thing of beauty, quite capable of frying lesser sects' inner sect disciples... short of their having a heavenly vein or similar special physique.

Definitely it would fry lone cultivators. There were few people who could withstand lightning of this intensity.

The disguised person only inspected the calligraphy and thought bitterly that the boy's calligraphy resembled neither of his fathers, nor his mother's.

Of course, unbeknownst to the disguised person in question, he was, in turn, being observed by an insect drone golem. A flea.

No one ever noticed golems that small, because no one ever got gu that small without ludicrous effort and some kind of energy signature that was trackable and manipulatable. The closest thing was gu worms that were used as control parasites. Those inevitably had more qi than could be found in a normal insect or the drone, for instance.

Sun Jin's peak lord was looking after him, as usual.

It was possible that a man or woman, girl or boy who had been bought as a slave could have had a useful physique that had been found out later, bought as a bargain and resold at a higher price.

Sun Jin wouldn't put it past people to have that kind of luck or lack of morals.

From Sun Jin's investigation and even his illicit scrying and spying, there had been no slave girls or boys traded or sold to cultivators that had been known of, by various noble clans and families in the region or among the Suli's former rivals, though more than a few people in certain local noble households had been disappeared over the years.

While Aoguang claimed this was normal and that most high ranked families involved in politics had dungeons to torture spies and set spies amongst each other as a matter of course, it was still an avenue of investigation.

The Sun family had no dungeon that he could find even though he scryed for it. That already made them better than some of the others.

He was heavily tempted to have Enlai wreck the places with dungeons that he had actually found, though.

Nobles dying here and there were completely normal.

Junwang Quan Shi's death was unremarkable, other than for the resulting chaos afterwards.

Of his sons, five of the ten shu boys had been involved with reclaiming the nomad land for the Empire, the Imperial family and the Emperor. These young men had their own estates, and their own small forces though they would likely never make it back to the Empire proper again. If they wanted to keep their lives, they would have to stay out of politics.

Aoguang had his own land from his peak lord and stated in flat, completely certain terms that he had no interest whatsoever in the properties left behind by the Junwang in question, to his siblings' deep relief. All Aoguang had taken was his mother's relics before he left.

That left the two di sons and their mother with an iron hand on the majority of the man's estates within the Empire.

The cefei's dowries of land and shops or valuables naturally had been returned to them and their children either male or female, by the will that their children's sire had left behind.

The shiqie and tongfang were not so lucky, having nothing of their own save what their husband had left them and no support whatsoever to lean on.

Of Junwang Quan Shi's daughters, seven more had been married off by the time of his death, a further five had been engaged, their dowries paid out.

He had left two women among his shiqie and one of his tongfang pregnant.

With the death of their master, all of the shiqie and tongfang who bore daughters or had no children were in jeopardy.

The wife naturally would not cast out the ce fei or their children; not when she had a good grasp on them and they had useful families who might go against her sons on their behalf. She could use them assuming they continued keeping their heads down.

The tongfang and shiqie had nothing save if their husband had left them anything in the will. Those few who had sons and whose boys had gained land out of the empire naturally went with them; those who had married daughters or engaged daughters naturally went with them to the husband's home but those who had only daughters who were not engaged or no children at all had no prospects.

That meant those tongfang and shiqie who had no one, and those daughters who had not been engaged yet were likely to be driven out or sold off unless they found a sturdy thigh to cling to.

In short, they were fucked. Naturally the weeping and wailing reached the heavens while they frantically looked for someone to shelter them.

All of the remaining ten unmarried daughters were from shiqie too, since it was a given that the three daughters of the ce fei and one daughter of the junwang fei had been 'sold off' first to advantageous marriages and engagements. This meant those women of the fu in trouble were three pregnant women, ten shu daughters and their mothers, the two mothers of the now destitute sons and twenty seven tongfang, many of whom had been bestowed by the Emperor or accepted as bribes from officials on this or that occasion.

All of whom were looking for support.

It was a fact that Aoguang had no good memories of the fu. It was a fact that the assortment of women in the Junwang's rear court was constantly changing during his time there. At least five of the women who had displayed ill manners towards him, schemed against him, treated him badly and disregarded him before he left the fu were dead now.

Women who the Junwang had been bored with and who gave him no offspring had previously been married out to stewards, or given away while their master yet lived. Concubines, servants and manservants who offended the Junwang were killed, beaten or demoted. Spies of either gender were killed.

There were probably people in there who had never so much as met him, given the high personnel turnover rate.

Aoguang, however, was out of fucks to give and had no intention of hearing anyone out, no matter how pitiful.

His other brothers who now had estates had no real emotional reason to help anyone else from the fu either, unless they could enter an alliance of mutual profit.

This did not stop the people in danger of becoming sold off or who had so few personal assets that they relied on the di sons not to be destitute or having to live in poor circumstances in the fu from trying to beg them for help, trying to look pitiful to induce their sympathy or trying to invoke familial feelings.

The rear court being a pit of vipers had long ruined Aoguang's ability to feel sorry for a woman, man or child.

Unlike Heiying who had started with a grudge against the elders of the clan and distance between some of the branches because of their constant attempts to win back their status and power, but had eventually mellowed out enough to be capable of caring for his kin and having more faith in them, Aoguang hadn't mellowed out towards his family with time at all.

It still left Shizun with a lot of requests to meet and begging letters in his correspondence and paperwork.

And I spent so much finding them. All those fanfics, novels and mangas that were all waiting for me to read. Heck! even my author list was gone
Why are you doing this Google chrome!? Or is it the fault of my phone... no it can't be, fucking chrome already usurped the internal storage of my phone with no external memory card a chance to switch with. So why....
The only positive thing that happened is that I have a spare internal memory again. And that's not even a good thing for it was resulted for my tabs sacrifices.
