Hmmm, I suppose if the ce fei had doting father they might have their own money but this is unusual. Even so, they still wouldn't have a say over what happens to other people's sons/daughters. A powerful/rich concubine would have a say over her own sons/daughters but that should be it.

BTW, I don't know if you intend to follow this but won't they all be in mourning for a year? Since the junwang died, I mean. They can't marry while in mourning.

- the di son would take all of the property and business

I tried to edit stuff in but I'm kind of wobbly so if something isn't fitting, I'll just have to get back to it later. Just remind me after I nap.

Also in my head, the junwang fei hates all the shiqie and tongfang. She dislikes the ce fei too but at least they have a use. The tongfang and shiqie don't.

Essentially it's like a united front of 'let's all screw the lower rank scheming concubines over!' Fueled by the 'I got here first' grudge.

The junwang fei can mostly do as she likes to the lesser concubines but she really shouldn't go overboard. I mean, it's not completely lawless there, is it? So she can't boil them in oil or kill their kids.

Wait, I remember now. One of the punishments that is very effective yet not considered "too much" is to send the women to a temple. Rofl, they are confined there and have to live like ascetics. Basically, make them go on a religious retreat ... but its forever hahahahaha.

With three families down including the good Mang family which had withdrawn after their boy had also been thrown out like dirty water, all of which had grudges, that left the Qiang family resources the many factions which had taken to holding sect resources and begrudging them to their rivals and the sect's currently grubby reputation.

Some of those minor factions were in fact thinking of splitting from the sect as it was, starting their own even smaller minor, newborn sects.

One of the minor factions had already left.

Elder Qiang had said it was good riddance to bad rubbish, but it was only the start of the snowball going downhill.

The flip side is, give most of these people even a little more power and suddenly their true nature shines through. Like inviting a viper into your home

the most senior male heir takes everything
the heir will decide what, if anything, the others can have
not including whatever the others were already given when the junwang was alive

the heir would be, in the proper order:

the oldest di son
if there is no surviving di son, then the di son of the oldest son (grandson of the deceased)
if there are no surviving di grandsons, then the oldest di uncle (the brother of the deceased, born of the same di wife)

if the junwang's mother is still alive she would decide the fate of the lesser concubines

the ce fei are wives - lesser wives, yes, but they are wives. they have to be provided for properly. it would be shameful if their house failed to take care of the deceased's concubines

the shu daughters will be married off properly, with someone of the appropriate rank - the family would lose face if they married off too low. I mean like, they would never marry them off to peasants or anything like that...

I am not sure what would happen to the tongfangs kids but they should be fine. I mean, they wouldn't be sold off or killed since they are the junwang's kids. The heir would face society's judging eyes if he was too cruel to the kids. They are his half siblings.

I guess my point is that it's a matter of "face." They can't openly dispose of the kids because the neighbors would talk.

I doubt that would be a big deal back then. Overweight wasn't bad. Rich, older man marries a younger woman is perfectly normal. Even today a toad-like Trump can marry hot models half his age...

She's gonna be a rich wife? Yeah, not seeing the problem here. All marriages were arranged back then and she wouldn't have been expecting a handsome man. Wealth and stability were what people looked for back then.

Edit:

You have to realize, the wife of a rich man will control all his assets in daily life. I mean, she'll have all his money to play with (the money for the household, not the business).

Even young and sheltered women back then always knew they would be married off to get an advantage for their families. She would have had to bury her head in the sand her entire life not to know she was going to be sent off. Besides, as a shu daughter this is a step up for her to be a di wife.

If the shu daughter could do better then she shouldn't be in danger. Marrying beneath your social station means your husband cannot mistreat you. That would be offensive to her birth family who are higher in rank.

However...

This so called official in the ministry of rites....His background didn't add up.

Firstly, this man was a serial widower, secondly, his eagerness for the marriage was unusual, even for a man hankering for a younger bride.

Thirdly, and worst, his known official rank didn't explain why he could be of use to her brothers who all had higher ranks than he did, on paper. On paper, they should be able to bully whoever they wanted but this man, apparently they had to bribe.

Nobles dying here and there were completely normal.

Junwang Quan Shi's death was unremarkable, other than for the resulting chaos afterwards.

Of his sons, five of the ten shu boys had been involved with reclaiming the nomad land for the Empire, the Imperial family and the Emperor. These young men had their own estates, and their own small forces though they would likely never make it back to the Empire proper again. If they wanted to keep their lives, they would have to stay out of politics.

Aoguang had his own land from his peak lord and stated in flat, completely certain terms that he had no interest whatsoever in the properties left behind by the Junwang in question, to his siblings' deep relief. All Aoguang had taken was his mother's relics before he left.

That left the two di sons and their mother with an iron hand on the majority of the man's estates within the Empire, because his mother was long dead.

The cefei's dowries of land and shops or valuables naturally had been returned to them and their children either male or female, by the will that their children's sire had left, with the caveat that they be used to marry the children out in a manner advantageous to his eldest son and the continuance of the faction that the Junwang had built when he still lived.

The shiqie and tongfang were not so lucky, having nothing of their own save what their husband had left them and no support whatsoever to lean on save for what the Junwang fei was willing to give them.

Given how those shiqie and tongfang had gotten their positions, this did not look promising.

Of Junwang Quan Shi's daughters, seven more had been married off by the time of his death, a further five had been engaged, their dowries paid out.

He had left two women among his shiqie and one of his tongfang pregnant.

With the death of their master, all of the tongfang who had no children were in jeopardy.

The wife naturally would not cast out the ce fei or their children; not when she had to look after them for the sake of face and in addition had a good grasp on them. Worse, they had useful families who might go against her sons on their behalf. She could use them assuming they continued keeping their heads down.

The tongfang and shiqie had nothing save if their husband had left them anything in the will. Those few who had sons and whose boys had gained land out of the empire naturally went with them; those who had married daughters or engaged daughters naturally went with them to the husband's home but those who had only daughters who were not engaged had low prospects, those with no children at all had no prospects.

That meant those tongfang who had no one, were likely to be driven out or sold off unless they found a sturdy thigh to cling to.

In short, they were fucked. Naturally the weeping and wailing reached the heavens while they frantically looked for someone to shelter them.

All of whom were looking for support.

It was a fact that Aoguang had no good memories of the fu. It was a fact that the assortment of women in the Junwang's rear court was constantly changing during his time there. At least five of the women who had displayed ill manners towards him, schemed against him, treated him badly and disregarded him before he left the fu were dead now.

Women who the Junwang had been bored with and who gave him no offspring had previously been married out to stewards, or given away while their master yet lived. Concubines, servants and manservants who offended the Junwang were killed, beaten or demoted. Spies of either gender were killed.

There were probably people in there who had never so much as met him, given the high personnel turnover rate.

Aoguang, however, was out of fucks to give and had no intention of hearing anyone out, no matter how pitiful.

His other brothers who now had estates had no real emotional reason to help anyone else from the fu either, unless they could enter an alliance of mutual profit.

This did not stop the people in danger of becoming sold off or who had so few personal assets that they relied on the di sons not to be destitute or having to live in poor circumstances in the fu from trying to beg them for help, trying to look pitiful to induce their sympathy or trying to invoke familial feelings.

The rear court being a pit of vipers had long ruined Aoguang's ability to feel sorry for a woman, man or child.

Unlike Heiying who had started with a grudge against the elders of the clan and distance between some of the branches because of their constant attempts to win back their status and power, but had eventually mellowed out enough to be capable of caring for his kin and having more faith in them, Aoguang hadn't mellowed out towards his family with time at all.

It still left Shizun with a lot of requests to meet and begging letters in his correspondence and paperwork.

He wasn't happy about that but he wasn't an unfeeling rock either. He would at least investigate things before asking Aoguang what he wanted done or making any decisions.

With the master dead and ten of his daughters and two of his sons destitute, the tong fang, shiqie and the children in question were little more than commodities on two legs, though the educated boys would likely be given some resources for face's but mostly left to fend for themselves in the world of scholar officials or the military, given a sum and perhaps a few mu of land and then as soon as politely possible, married to shu daughters of officials and then kicked out of the nest to make their own living.

The girls, vulnerable without prepared dowries were even further at risk but would inevitably have to be married out to shu sons of officials to preserve the household's reputation and get useful connections
