Consider this situation. You are the administrator of Tartarus. Due to some annoying circumstances, some titans are breaking loose and you, being the powerless bureaucrat you are, have to handle this problem. Problem is, you don't have the strength to defeat them and put them back into their cage yourself. So, you have to get help, but the only help you can get is from Tartarus itself. You have the authority to release 7 heroes from Tartarus. Seven and only seven. Now, who are you going to release? Who will be in your dream team? The rules: 1) It must be heroes of the cultures that have close relationships with the Greeks. That means heroes from Greek myths, Egyptian myths, Mesopotamian myths and Italian myths. 2) It can't be heroes from cultures that have no variant of Tartarus, such as Jewish lores (since they originally don't actually have an afterlife) or Hindu lores (since they believe in reincarnation). 3) In accordance to Rule #1, don't include heroes of Aztec, Vietnam, China or Japan. 4) It doesn't matter if they never live during the same period, they're still in Tartarus. 5) Please, no Percy Jackson bullshit. For example: 1) Hercules, for his strength 2) Odysseus, for his wisdom 3) Gilgamesh, for his prowess 4) Achilles, for his invulnerability 5) Imhotep, for his skills in medicine 6) Julius Caesar, for his dashing militaristic fervor 7) Boudica, because she's awesome and full sausage fest can be boring.
Tartarus was like the real heavy duty version of greek hell, right? NOT the underworld. More like Lucifer's Cage from Supernatural. It's like, the prison of the Titans. Maybe throw in the most evil son-of-a-bitches to ever live to share the cage with them. Why the fuck would any of those people be there.
Tartarus is actually the all-encompassing underworld in the Greek myths. The Elysium Fields where blessed people and heroes go to is also within a part of Tartarus. Tartarus is actually described as a mountain, with the prison of titans located far underneath the mountain and the mountain itself was there to keep them away. It's also sometimes called Hades, though Hades is also the name of the god that maintains the place. They're like Earth and Elysium Fields is something like Britain, while the titan's prison is something like Antarctica.
I would chose 7 people with greatest authority yet still powerful themselves. So if they fail they can share the blame and swipe it under the rug.
What? You really need to brush up on your Underworld Geography. Here, let me link you to the internet's source of wisdom: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_underworld#Geography "While Tartarus is not considered to be directly a part of the underworld, it is described as being as far beneath the underworld as the earth is beneath the sky.[12]" Tartarus is the Underworld's deep dark prison. The Underworld's Hell. It is not an interchangeable term for the entire place.
Greeks got all those argonaut, Troy etc stories and stuff just for selecting "hero dream team" . You are 3000 years late.
Wasn't there a point in Fairy Tale the anime where there was a 'book of tartarus' with those demons in it or something?
Let's not be too hung up on the terms, shall we? Besides, that description in the wikipedia can't be verified as of right now. I mean, where can I read Buxton's work? My definition came from Grolier Encyclopedia that I read when I was a teen. I know, it's outdated now that we have wiki, but it did give reference as well as translated transcripts of the definition of greek underworld.
Lemme just go down Google's search results. https://www.greekmythology.com/Other_Gods/Tartarus/tartarus.html "In Greek mythology, Tartarus was both a primordial deity that existed before the Olympians, as well as a name to describe a region of the Underworld." -- Region of the underworld, not THE UNDERWORLD http://www.theoi.com/Protogenos/Tartaros.html "TA′RTARUS (Tartaros), a son of Aether and Ge, and by his mother Ge the father of the Gigantes, Typhoeus and Echidna. (Hygin. Praef. p. 3, &c., Fab. 152 ; Hes. Theog. 821 ; Apollod. ii. 1. § 2.) In the Iliad Tartarus is a place far below the earth, as far below Hades as Heaven is above the earth, and closed by iron gates. (Hom. Il. viii. 13 &c., 481; comp. Hes. Theog. 807.)" -- As far below Hades - HADES being the term used synonymous with THE UNDERWORLD, NOT TARTARUS, and the god that manages it ... Oh look, I found your source of confusion: "Later poets describe Tartarus as the place in the lower world in which the spirits of wicked men are punished for their crimes, and sometimes they use the name as synonymous with Hades or the lower world in general; and pater Tartarus is used for Pluto. (Val. Flacc. iv. 258.)" Fuck those guys. They're just wrong. ... At least they realize it's a "place in the lower world." .. But using the term synonymously with the entire Underworld is like calling the Christian version of the afterlife "Hell," and completely ignoring any alternatives that exist. What pessimistic guys.
1) Flamma - for badass 1on1 fighting skills 2) Queen Mentuhotep - cause she got the original Book of the Dead with its spells 3) Hector - good fighter and military leader 4) Hyppolita - cause some ranged prowess is useful 5) Phemonoe - knowledge is power 6) Spartakus, additional fighting prowess and leadership 7) Iason
1) Orpheus, his music skill is enough to revive the dead 2) Perseus, awesome skills EDIT: 3)Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus, the dude who beat Hannibal 4) Daidalos, the genius 5) Leonidas, 300 says it all 6) Dionysus, he became a GOD and of WINE on top of that 7) Bellerophon, Monster slayer Well, it's a pity we can't use norse heroes... so these are the guys i would pick and i dont get why these guys would be in Tartarus after all thats the place for the worst monsters.
Okay, you win, but for simplicity's sake, let's just go with Tartarus. You can think of it as Underworld if you wish. This is just for a bit of fun, I'm not prepared to go for a long-term brawl over terms. Yes, but Jason and the Argonauths have to be content with the heroes that live within the same time as Jason. He couldn't bring along heroes that have died or haven't existed yet.
