Someone please refresh my memory. What is the reason Prince Fu and Huangfu Hao so fixated on Shen Miao? Especially Huangfu Hao. Since he is a foreign prince, what makes him so interested in her?

 

Huangfu Hao is the brother of Princess Ming, the one who was turned into an ice sculpture. Only Shen Miao had offended Princess Ming previously, so naturally she is the prime suspect. As for Prince Fu, he is suspicious of her ever since he saw the strange hatred in her eyes. He is deep enough to see that the 'bad luck' happening to the Shens cannot be natural and someone must be behind all of it. And anyone who is not with him, is automatically against him.

Prince Fu suggest the Crown Prince to recruit Shen Xin to his side, and remarks that Shen Miao is of marriageable age.

167 – The Crown Prince is suspicious of the suggestion but goes along with it. The emperor does not disagree, but he is well aware that the idea came from Prince Fu, and coldly calculates the check and balances. The Shens receive a royal summons to their surprise, and suddenly Shen Miao wondered at the lack of updates from Pei Lang. She looks out of the window; and the ninja ventures to ask if she is longing for Xie only to be rebuked. He informs her that Xie was not in the capital. Gao Yang and Ji Yushu are puzzled by the royal summons of Shen Miao but decided against reporting to Xie without any evidence. Lady Luo and Shen Miao meet the Empress and Concubine Dong and they drop heavy hints of marriage before being sent back. Shen Xin opposes the marriage to the Crown Prince who already has several women, and not willing to thrust his daughter into palace politics. Shen Miao, Shen Qiu and Liu Ling overheard the matter. She calmly tells the two that she is willing to marry to save the family from royal retaliation.

168 – Shen Xin and Lady Luo hastily look for a suitable match, anyone who is good and not involved in politics. However there are no prospects: nobody dared to offend the royal family. Luo Ling proposes himself, and says he could take Shen Miao back to Spring City. Luo Ling reveals his true feelings for Shen Miao. Shen Qiu is unhappy to have his sister stolen, but Luo Ling reminds them the decision remained with Shen Miao. At this point Mrs Su arrives and immediately brings up the marriage proposal for her son Su Mingfeng. Lady Luo tells her of the delicate political situation, Mrs Su says she is willing to risk it if it gives Su Mingfeng happiness. Luo Tan teases Shen Miao about her three choices (Crown Prince, Luo Ling, Su Mingfeng). Luo Tan reminds her about the wishing tree, and only Rui Wang is high enough to match the blessing prediction.

169 – The next day Feng Anning visits. She had shied away guiltily from the Shens after the kidnapping incident, this time she came over with her brother Feng Zixian. They came to offer marriage to save Shen Miao. While they were still talking, an imperial edict arrives from the empress to summon Shen Miao alone the following day. Shen Miao tells them all not to worry, Lady Luo wonders if she has already someone in mind. In the palace, the other princes discuss about the Crown Prince and Prince Fu. They plot to assassinate Shen Miao to make Shen Xin blame the Crown Prince. Xie finally receives news about Shen Miao’s marriage crisis and the suitors who came forward: Su Mingfeng, Luo Ling and Feng Zixian. Xie is puzzled by Feng Zixian and then enraged at his subordinates lateness regarding the imperial proposal for Shen Miao is revealed. Meanwhile, the reason Pei Lang is unable to warn Shen Miao is because he is confined in Prince Fu’s palace. The Prince is suspicious of a traitor and surveillance is heavy. Pei Lang sighs, he praises Prince Fu’s win-win strategy, and yet worries for Shen Miao.

170 – Shen Miao visits the Empress, who is displeased when the young girl doesn’t seem to be cowed. The Empress who was not in favor of the marriage wanted Shen Miao to make the first refusal, so that Shen Miao would be the one to be blamed by the emperor. But Shen Miao plays the part of a timid and dull person, and frustrates the empress who then sends her back. An eunuch leads Shen Miao on a different path and leads her to Pei Lang who informs her of Prince Fu’s role in the marriage. Pei Lang warns Shen Miao, and she repeats that she doesn’t care who she marries as long as she achieves her goals in the end. Pei Lang offers himself as a way out, only to be ridiculed by her. They are then ambushed by assassins, but Rui Wang appears to save them, and takes Shen Miao away. He roughly handles Shen Miao in jealousy, and Shen Miao exclaims his name loudly. It was overheard by a person.

171 – The person is Princess Rongxin, she had came to the palace to plead on Shen Miao’s behalf. Princess Rongxin saw it was Rui Wang with Shen Miao, and Xie quickly makes up a lie using a homophone of his name. They lie to her saying that Shen Miao got lost in the palace. Princess Rongxin is suspicious but protective of Shen Miao. She peels Shen Miao away and warns her not to get close to Rui Wang who is from another country. Shen Miao is touched by her concern, and worries for her heart disease. Meanwhile, Xie punishes Gao Yang and Ji Yushu, demands for more info on Shen Miao’s suitors and medicine for Princess Rongxin’s heart disease. He visits Shen Miao who was sleeping, and saw a pendant on her window. The ninja on guard says it is a gift from Luo Ling, Xie takes it for the family pet. He wakes Shen Miao and asks if she is marrying to protect her family or for her secret love. She reminds him that they are only allies, to which Xie responds by kissing her on the lips. “Now we’re not just allies.”

172 – The princes that plotted against Shen Miao receive ominous signs, and thinks that the Emperor himself was warning them. The emperor is furious at the foreign embassies. He tolerates Huangfu Hao because the matter with Princess Ming’s death, but is furious with Rui Wang’s veiled threats of taking back several cities. It causes the emperor to cool off the matter of Shen Miao’s marriage, as he did not want to offend Shen Xin who is an important general. Meanwhile, Princess Rongxin receives medicine for her heart disease. She feels it all too coincidental, and suffers another attack. The Shens rejoice at the drop of the imperial marriage. Luo Ling asks if Shen Miao liked his gift, she is of course puzzled. A letter of invitation from Princess Rongxin arrives to interrupt Luo Ling.

173 – Shen Miao visits Princess Rongxin who invites her for some desert. The princess again warns her about Rui Wang and spends the rest of the day talking about trivialities. She then leads her to Xie’s former residence and reminisces about the past and Xie’s preferences. She then confronts Shen Miao about Xie’s fate, and threatens her to reveal the truth: did Rui Wang kill Xie? Xie arrives and reveals himself to his aunt Princess Rongxin. She is shocked, and then becomes cold because the way he had hid himself from her. Xie tells his aunt not to blame Shen Miao, and he would explain everything. Shen Miao takes the opportunity to leave for them to chat privately.

174 – Shen Miao returns home, Gao Yang questions Xie’s decision. That night Shen Miao is uneasy at the unresolved matter, and goes to visit Rui Wang’s residence by climbing the walls. He tells her not to worry and return, she asks if he plans to destroy her Ming country. They share a cryptic conversation about being the same, and she says she too wants to destroy her country. Xie hugs her close and kisses her passionately.

175 – Xie again against her who she wants to marry, she thinks for a while causing Xie to be unhappy. She asks if he’s jealous and wants to marry her, he admits so. She thinks the political situation is difficult, he tells her to wait for him to settle everything. Shen Miao says she has an idea. Meanwhile, Prince Fu slowly sidelines Pei Lang. he finally concludes there are real ties between Shen Miao and Rui Wang, and plans to ask Princess Rongxin. The princess is pondering about Xie’s identity as Rui Wang, and decides to write to Su Mingfeng. It is approaching the new year, a formal alliance between Huangfu Hao’s country Daqin and Ming is in the works. Shen Dongling is happy with her husband Wang Bi who part of the Crown Prince’s faction. To curry favour, Shen Dongling suggests a way to help the Crown Prince marry Shen Miao.

176 – She suggests for Huangfu Hao to ask Shen Miao for marriage, and says the Crown Prince can then step in to ‘save her’ by claiming a prior engagement. Shen Xin while opposing marriage would definitely choose the Crown Prince over the foreign Huangfu Hao, and he might even thank the Crown Prince. As long as Huangfu Hao is rewarded for his part of the drama, all would benefit. Wang Bi praises her, but Shen Dongling inwardly regrets making Shen Miao an enemy. Meanwhile, Su Mingfeng ultimately deduces that Xie is still alive, though he doesn’t know why he is hiding even from Princess Rongxin. He begins to actively search for Xie. Shen Miao receives an invitation from Shen Dongling to visit the mountains, and asks Xie about Wang Bi’s wealth, and was told it was from illegal salt trading. Xie informs her about Shen Dongling’s plot to ensnare her with the Crown Prince using Huangfu Hao. He again questions Shen Miao’s reasons for wanting to destroy her country of Ming, and marvels at her knowledge of politics of even his own country of Daliang. She tells him there are plenty of terrible ways to break up the alliance of Daqin and Ming: using murder, planted evidence and scapegoating.

177 – Prince Fu has imprisoned Pei Lang due to suspicions; he is the sort to judge ‘guilty before found innocent’. He also discovers that Princess Rongxin had contacted Su Mingfeng who was a close friend of Xie. From there he too suspects that Xie is alive. Prince Fu visits the tortured Pei Lang and tries to fish information about the Shens and their purpose in implanting him as a mole. Pei Lang remains stubborn, and accepts his fate. Meanwhile, Gao Yang and Ji Yushu are still imprisoned as punishment, and thus many letters and documents went unread. In the palace, Huangfu Hao asks for the Crown Prince’s help in his future fight for the throne in Daqin. The Crown Prince agrees, though Huangfu Hao thinks that the Crown Prince won’t be able to tame Shen Miao. Shen Miao writes back to Shen Dongling agreeing to visit, much to her surprise. In the end, Shen Dongling commits herself to the plot, and wants a battle of wits against Shen Miao. Meanwhile, Xie praises Shen Miao’s ruthlessness and proclaims that he would marry her after this affair is settled.

178 – Two days later, Shen Miao and Luo Tan goes out for the appointment in the mountains with Shen Dongling, accompanied with some guards. On the way, Luo Tan pesters her about her marriage choices, and says Shen Miao is too picky when she refuses them all. She then complains about how Gao Yang has been missing. Meanwhile, Huangfu Hao receives an invitation for a secret meeting with Crown Prince at the mountain to finalize some details before the drama. He sends his bodyguards away and is then assassinated; he dies screaming the Crown Prince’s name. Later, another Crown Prince arrives and was caught red-handed with the body by Huangfu Hao’s bodyguards. The Daqin soldiers are enraged and accused the Crown Prince of murder. Wang Bi and Shen Dongling who were on their way to the mountain were shocked.

179 – Wang Bi is terrified as he was the pretext for the entire drama to be staged and thus would be blamed. The Crown Prince would scapegoat him as the suggestion came from him (and from Shen Dongling). She suddenly realizes that Shen Miao has yet to arrive even though it was nearing the appointment’s hour, and Wang Bi decides to return to check. In fact Shen Miao and Luo Tan were delayed after an accident; their carriage had hit an old woman. Being responsible, they gave her medical attention much to public approval. By the time they were done, the appointed hour had passed, and Shen Miao decided to turn back home. The Shens inform them of Huangfu Hao’s assassination, and Shen Miao says there are witnesses to their delay due to the carriage accident. The Shens are furious at the whole matter, thinking that it was yet another plot to implicate their family. Shen Qiu and Luo Ling return and informed them the details of Huangfu Hao’s death and the Crown Prince as the main suspect as he was the one who invited Huangfu Hao to the mountain. Luo Tan asks why did Shen Dongling’s invitation did not mention that these two men would also be present. Shen Qiu says Shen Dongling and Wang Bi were already imprisoned. Later Shen Miao asks Xie if he can change the country, he replies he can give her even the heavens if she desires it.

180 – News spread about how Daqin’s Huangfu Hao was killed by Ming’s Crown Prince. The empress forcefully pleads on her son’s behalf, only to be rebuked by the Emperor. Concubine Xu arrives to take advantage of the mess, angering the empress. The emperor sends them both out. The news reaches Concubine Dong and Prince Fu, they revel in the opportunity. She wonders who was responsible, and Prince Fu suspects Rui Wang and Shen Miao. Meanwhile, Gao Yang and Ji Yushu are released, and the later catches up with his reports. Ji Yushu finally knows that Pei Lang had been captured, but decides to wait for more news, in a twisted logic that Pei Lang is Xie’s competitor for Shen Miao. Shen Qiu encourages Luo Ling to pursue Shen Miao openly. During their patrol, they encounter Rui Wang, and Luo Ling recognizes his gift to Shen Miao hanging on Rui Wang’s waist.

181 – Luo Ling demands to know where it came from, Rui Wang lies that it was given by a girl and leaves before he could be questioned further. Luo Ling is very disheartened. Shen Miao asks Xie to check on Pei Lang as there had been no word for a long time. He informs her that the Emperor has decided to sacrifice the Crown Prince to appease Daqin. It doesn’t matter who the true culprit was: Daqin lost a prince, and so Ming must also lose a prince. In prison, Wang Bi and Shen Dongling receive their last meal, and were informed that they were being scapegoated. The emperor is also taking the chance to ruin the Wang family for their illegal salt trading and seizes their wealth. Desperate, Shen Dongling tries to contact Shen Miao. Shen Miao ignores the message. The Empress kneels for days to beg for the Crown Prince, Concubine Xu arrives to mock her.

182 – Rui Wang arrives to visit the Emperor and says he received an order from his own Daliang Emperor to take a princess back. The emperor asks if he had someone in mind, Rui Wang names Shen Miao. The emperor is reluctant and tries to say that Shen Xin would refuse; Rui Wang says the emperor can just issue a royal edict. The Emperor after thinking about the situation with Daliang, Daqin and his country of Ming finally agrees. The Crown Prince commits ‘suicide’ in prison, the Empress falls ill, Wang Bi and Shen Dongling sentenced to decapitation, the Wang family men exiled and their women turned to army prostitutes. Luo Ling is still very depressed, but then Shen Xin and Lady Luo returns to inform Shen Miao that she has been betrothed to Rui Wang.

183 - Shen Qiu is angry, especially since he and Luo Ling ‘coincidentally’ met Rui Wang previously. Shen Xin said the emperor told him privately that Rui Wang all but coerced the marriage by threatening the border cities. Though the emperor was eloquent, Shen Xin is still unhappy to sacrifice his daughter. Shen Miao calms her family down and agrees, despite their concerns. Later Luo Ling asks her directly if she wants to marry Rui Wang, and Shen Miao says the imperial edict meant she has no choice. He thought she would bravely refuse, and bitterly congratulates her. Luo Tan comments Rui Wang is unlike other handsome but usless men and says she wants to go Daliang with her. Shen Xin and Lady Luo still worry for Shen Miao and laments at their helplessness. The news spreads to Princess Rongxin who visits her brother the Emperor to find out the reason, unaware that she was being spied on. Meanwhile Su Mingfeng’s parents console him much to his exasperation. His men reports that Princess Rongxin is spying on Rui Wang and Rui Wang has men spying on Shen Miao.

184 – The Shens try to lift the marriage to no avail. A delegation from Xie arrives with the marriage gifts, Shen Miao recognizes the leader as Xie’s personal bodyguard Iron Coat. Iron Coat uncomfortably lists the extremely extravagant and luxurious gifts in the traditional Ming custom by singing it. The list is so long that the Shens are stunned; Lady Luo says it must be a mistake. Iron Coat continues singing for 10 pages and says that the main properties are in Daliang, and thereby gives 10,000 gold instead and deeds to the houses in Ming. Shen Xin asks if the Daliang Emperor knows about about the list, Iron Coat says this is nothing in their eyes and assures them that Shen Miao will be accorded the proper royal ceremonies, and everything from the invitations to the actual date will be done auspiciously from the gates of the Ming capital all the way to Daliang. It will be a public announcement of Shen Miao’s new identity. While everyone is shocked, Shen Miao merely say thanks and Iron Coat leaves. The Shens are troubled by the huge gifts as custom dictates the dowry should be equal in value. That night, the ninja brings Shen Miao over to Rui Wang’s place. The servants all greet her with delight and respect. Xie says he needs to personally get her measurements for wedding clothes. She scolds him and brings up the dowry problem; Xie casually says “there are more”. They are interrupted by the capture of Su Mingfeng.

185 – Su Mingfeng sees Rui Wang and was shocked to find Shen Miao with him. Rui Wang reminds him that they are betrothed. Su Mingfeng pleads for Rui Wang to remove his mask as he is too similar to Xie who had disappeared. Rui Wang obliges and removes the mask, and Su Mingfeng calls him an asshole for lying to him. For a while Su Mingfeng thought Rui Wang would have killed him. He happily congratulates Shen Miao, and berates Xie for hiding from Princess Rongxin and his own father. Xie interrupts by revealing his true identity as Daliang Emperor’s brother, Minister Xie was never his father and that he was in disguise all the while. Su Mingfeng is stunned as they were childhood friends. Su Mingfeng is furious as he feels betrayed by a friendship built on lies. He rants bitterly about how Xie had used Princess Rongxin and him and played them as fools, hurting them with his fake death. Shen Miao interrupts angrily and reminds him the times Xie had helped Su Mingfeng’s family; that he is only venting to make himself feel better when only Xie’s identity had changed. Xie says he has repaid Minister Xie by helping his house survive: though he had lost his sons, the emperor no longer views Minister Xie as a threat. Su Mingfeng knows nothing of his hardship: Xie had been surrounded by death, he owes nothing to the country of Ming.

186 – Sun Mingfeng leaves, distraught. Xie sends Shen Miao home. Su Mingfeng’s visit to Rui Wang was reported to Prince Fu. Prince Fu knows there must be something between Su Mingfeng, Rui Wang, Princess Rong Xin and Shen Miao, and suspects Rui Wang to have leveraged the emperor to get Shen Miao. He remembers about Pei Lang who still refuses to talk, and orders that he be kept alive. Meanwhile, the Shens are still fretting over the matter of dowry. Luo Tan reminds them that Shen Miao needs to hand-embroider the wedding dress. Rui Wang personally arrives to send the wedding dress. Shen Qiu demands to know his evil plans for his sister. Rui Wang gently praises Shen Miao’s virtues; raising hackles in Shen Miao at his speech pattern. Shen Qiu and Shen Xin are ready to explode, but Lady Luo interrupts. Rui Wang says that she can call him by his personal name: Jingxing. Luo Tan says it was the same as Xie Jingxing, but Rui Wang does not know who that is. Shen Qiu extols Xie Jingxing’s fame and snidely says Rui Wang would not match him. Rui Wang asks if Shen Qiu admires Xie, to which he says Xie is his hero. All the while, Shen Miao is ready to spit tea.

187 – Rui Wang did not rise to Shen Qiu’s baiting, and Lady Luo is impressed by his bearing. Luo Tan praises him and calls him ‘brother-in-law’, Rui Wang returns the favor and calls her ‘cousin’. Shen Qiu privately thinks all women are the same as even his mother and Luo Tan are fooled by a handsome face. Luo Ling watches on bitterly. Rui Wang brings out the wedding dress and dispenses the need for Shen Miao’s handiwork, the Daliang Emperor had used the best tailor and the dress had been ready for three months. Shen Miao is angry Xie had copped a feel while getting her measurements that night, yet the dress had already been ready for three months. She glares at him, Xie smiles back which was seen by Lady Luo. Shen Qiu is in disbelief, how did he plan it 3 whole months in advance and got her size? Xie glibly says he saw her three months ago, the dress was a gift from the Daliang Emperor. As for the size... if he wants to know, he will find out. He calls for the dress. Shen Miao is reminded of the past where she had painstakingly made a pattern for Prince Fu for their marriage, only for him to be blindly drunk and not see the hidden design within. From that night on, she only received grief from Prince Fu. The dress is brought out, packaged in fragrant wood, complete with a phoenix crown. Lady Luo thought it was inappropriate, but Rui Wang says Shen Miao will be part of the Daliang royal family which only had Rui Wang and his brother emperor. Shen Xin grudgingly accepts Rui Wang’s thoughtfulness. Shen Miao is made speechless by the dress, Rui Wang asks to speak to her privately. Shen Miao agrees and brings him to her courtyard. Shen Xin tells Shen Qiu to spar with Rui Wang later. Xie looks around Shen Mia’s place and says it’s the first time for him to enter via the front door. Should have play dead because Shen Miao said she won't befriend with Third Lady however she didn't make plan to root her out yet, and Shen Dongling willingly offer herself on the chopping board.

Nothing really. When SM returns to the capital in two years, he'll look a lot better-not as round. SM won't recognize him at first and he'll tell her. Else wise, he is just a cute factor in the story. But when XJX invades the country, the Su Family isn't harmed.
