So in a some of the CN novels I read the author usually tries to seel the heavy sword as an actual good weapon and/or the best weapon you can possibly get, some novels include novels like Against the Gods and Coiling Dragon. But there's a reason the heavy sword doesn't really exist in our world that is, it's not practical it might have been invented sometime in the past. but the reason that it doesn't exist is that it was tried for war then the user got killed. That's why today there only exits good sword tennis and good swords that can keep you alive through a battle. The problem with heavy swords is that there too heavy and the user cant use them effisently. but I know that these two novels countered that by giving the characters stupid amount of strength since the MC in Against the Gods has "the Great Way of Budda" and in Coiling Dragon the MC is a "Dragon-blood Warrior" but still. And the heavy sword isn't the only fantasy sword with a problem there is also the whip sword (it also appeared in Coiling Dragon but they called it a soft sword), the sword that can split up into a whip with sword segments in it (if your not sure search up the new sword that the royal guards use in Starwars). the problem with this sword is that its joints are too weak when its a sword so it can withstand other swords and when its a whip it will be really hard to control.

Anyway, this is just me rambling but tell me what you think.

Without heavy sword authors can't use the trope about making heavy light and making light heavy and whatnot:blobokhand:

Also its fun hunting down monsters in MH using a GS:blobmelt:

Whip swords are a real thing. They are not segmented but are a long, flexible sword called an urumi. Often used in traditional Indian martial arts.

Makes sense that a heavy sword would be popular. Personally, I prefer a giant ax but that’s just me

Heavy weapons were used quite extensively and were practical in the battlefield. The greatswords or broadswords of the medieval age are the most popular of these 'heavy swords' Of course the swords as described in the novels you mentioned and the heavy exaggerated swords in anime and manga are of course impractical. But they do have a precedent in the real world. Some of the European great swords I mentioned before were as long as 6 feet. Also though the movie was crap, Ironclad has the hero actually use a great sword. This fight scene in the climax has a duel between the wielder of a great axe and a greatsword.

Though I have not seen a segmented whip sword, the urumi is a flexible sword used in the martial arts of south India. I'm not sure how practical they were in real combat as I don't see them being effective against any kind of armour, but they were used in duels and exhibition fights (still are).

They are more of a hidden weapon... You can wear them like a belt and they can be used for assassination. Also as far as armor is concerned, while it can't break metal armor, a single cut anywhere on the body is already fatal...

I actually read a webcomic once where the top martial artists used a weird spear/sword thingie. When an elf encountered them she was like *literal face palm* "Ugh, we elves made the human guards use those as ceremonial weapons since they look impressive but suck as actual weapons." After hundreds of years the preposterously unwieldy weapons became seen as elite (since they were used by the palace guards or some such) and the elf had to admit they did make it work.

But yeah, sometimes people in fiction use stupid weapons for stupid reasons but they can make it look cool instead of dumbe because of plot armor or whatever.
