It make sense from a drug dealers POV, the first one's free and once you start paying for the drug the pain of stopping is what keeps you buying.

Yeah, it feels that way, now it won't make much sense since you can buy all the premium chapters for some dolars but later on if you are like 300 chapters ahead, you will feel like losing money/time if you don't continue doing it. Maybe it's a way of keeping the heavy spenders after some of them understand how microtransactions works ( not saying all of them don't undertand it)

Not really. This is more like a gamble and I don't think anyone would be stupid enough to bite their plan.

On adwalls they get revenue from everyone but in this model not only they lose the revenue from free readers (due to limited ads), they can't guarantee spirit stones sales.

    Same here.

I actually look forward to the day QI realizes they are losing more than what they were losing before. :blobpopcorn_cool::blobpopcorn_cool:

The way I see it, the people who used scripts to bypass ads will still be the ones leaving
Those who watch the ads will be patient enough to wait a day
those who spend spirit stones will either earn more or buy

This is actually the point. QI had revenue from them when the chapters were adwalled.

But now, those readers will just wait for the chapters and it is even unlikely that they'll watch some ads to get stones.

Ads pay peanuts, the chapters will still have ads at the beginning, you keep ignoring the fact that $1 spent on spirit stones is equivalents to thousands watching one ad.

Even if only 5% of the users buy spirit stones, it makes up for 90% of the rest who dont

So they wont lose more money, the ones who weren't paying anyway will leave.

It is not the right of anyone to get anything for free

Thing is, even those who had cash and don't mind paying on patreon admitted that they don't want to pay on this one.

Not saying they should give it for free. Just plainly amused by the possibility that QI could be losing more than what they were losing before.

Like I said, it doesn't work like you said, you need only 1 user to spend to earn enough revenue to mitigate losses from 1000 users. Microtransactions are problematic because it is addictive.
You underestimate human's psychology and propensity for addiction

They are doing Paywall because there are those people who would pay for them.
Like the "Congratulation! You won a/an %*$#" ads.

Though I'm not privy to their financials i still find it difficult to believe Qidian will be in the green even after this move. They've been in the red for so long trying to gather goodwill and popularity. But with what they pay per chapter to translators and to editors i still don't see how they will get a return on their investment let alone any substantial profits.
I'd be very interested to know what their books look like. From everything i have found out (admittedly isn't much) it would be a fun read.

This is so true. Not even bringing Lootboxes into the equation, micro transactions are addictive enough. In Qidians case its the allure of being ahead of others and in general as up to date as you can be. The people who pay will pay lots and outweigh anyone who left the site for their decision. And people who don't pay but stay will still bring in the same general amount from Ads as they did before. They will only really gain money from this.

Edit: Super surprised to see that this thread is still alive. Thought it died out early last week.

People keep making side threads that get merged in to the big one. And that revives the big one for awhile, until the next thread gets merged.

This will go on for quite a while maybe even after the anticipated "next step of Qidian".

If they do that, they'd be digging their own grave. People are getting more and more frustrated as to how can they earn a bunch of SS because some can't buy it. Others are maybe forced to because of the novels. I don't know how Qidian will do after this beta testing of premium program.

That's the point. Even if it's just a BETA people still actually have to pay for it -___- makes it even worse!

We don't really know, this premium program is still not final yet. But by the looks of it, seems like qidian's planning to get on with it.
