In antiquity it was commonplace. The concept of childhood is historically recent. Now, in several countries it is possible to marry at that age with parental consent. For obvious reasons, not many cases happen! I think in my, Brazil, it is possible to get married this way from the age of 16. There are very few cases, I never know one, but they do exist, and usually are people from very conservative religions.

Completely false. The legal age for marriage in India is 18. Getting people younger than 18 married is illegal. Maybe it was an American thing since your friend was in USA.
