    Hi all,

I've been browsing the "I'm looking for" threads for a few days now, seeing what sort of things get asked for, and what sorts of things get recommended. I noticed that Royalroadl is the one thing that keeps popping up in the recommendations that I don't know much about. I have only read one Royalroadl novel, Re:Hamster.

So, what are you favourite / otherwise good Royalroadl stories?
Are there any stories on Royalroadl that really impressed you?
Anything that has an interesting take or twist on something?
    Anything exceedingly well written?

I'm going to list my personal preferences below, but feel free to just recommend your favourites as well. I'd appreciate a quick description of why you like it, though, since this thread is so generic and tastes can vary.

I've read quite a bit of traditional fantasy novels, many western web novels / web originals / web serials, I've read the most common xianxia / high powered cultivation novels, Legendary Moonlight Sculptor and some other Korean VR-centric novels, I've looked into lots of the Japanese fantasy stuff and liked some, skipped some.

I like fantasy. I've read a lot of generic fantasy, so I'm most interested in things that either bring an interesting twist, or are very well written. If it's nice but doesn't try to do anything new, I get easily bored. I've read scifi too, and won't mind other types of stories if they're good, either.
I've read some for-women fiction, those are fine too. I'm not into yaoi, so stories with a focus on homosexual relationships would have to be really good to keep me interested (e.g. the Finnish novel Troll: A Love Story). Most stories trying to be ecchi / harem / that sorta stuff are embarrassingly bad at it, but if they're otherwise good or entertaining, I don't mind that.

Also, I guess if someone wants Western fantasy novel recommendations, feel free to ask. If you're looking for a specific theme (e.g. a dark world with a protagonist that's evil in the way web novels call "practical"), I might be able to think of something.

    Thanks!

Hmm, all of the novels I read on RRL, are also on the author's own website and that is generally where I read them.
But I definitely recommend these active webnovels on there:
The Wandering Inn, Savage Divinity, The Iron Teeth.

There are others I don't necessarily recommend though I am reading them right now, and others that are completed. But these are the best on RRL that are currently ongoing.

    Thanks for the recommendations!

I've come across Andur's stories before, and he's definitely a skilled writer of the fantastic. I have read Beyond, but I believe I saw it as an ebook. It looks like the warnings on his page are necessary, since I have indeed first come across his works elsewhere. I'll probably start with the completed works, instead of the ongoing Tale of G.O.D., but thanks for the recommendation any way.

It looks like most of these stories warn about the GORE they contain. I've read about The Iron Teeth before, but not read the story - I remember it described as bleak, violent and cheap on the death. Yet it is one of the few that doesn't have the gore tag.
... How much blood should I expect on the stories? Or is it just up to the author whether to put it there or not, and some authors use it more liberally than others?

There Is No Epic Loot Here, etc - I've read a few "I'm a dungeon" stories, and interestingly, I can't remember an actual evil one. Even in the Sailor Moon / Dungeon Keeper crossover where the rules of the world enforced evil stuff, the reincarnatee Ami stayed good. Still gonna give this a try, just interesting that I haven't seen it played straight yet.

Everybody Loves Large Chests is about
    a mimic
    isn't it?

How To Tame Your Princess - from the description, this seems absurdist/random things keeps happening humor. Not my first choice of fiction, and there's lots of other recommendations that I find more interesting here. Thanks, any way!

Savage Divinity - a generic name and a vague synopsis, but based on the comments, it takes the "Reincarnator in fantasy land" premise, and in the beginning presents itself as it might be the story one expects from that premise, but goes in quite a different direction. Praise for the characterization, multiple comments on the slow power build-up and the main character not being OP - that alone fixes two of my major problems with the typical cultivator story. Looks very promising!

The Legend of Randidly Ghosthound - First off, is the character's name REALLY Randidly Ghosthound? The name and synopsis tell nothing besides the premise of "suddenly, a game system exists on Earth". Based on the comments, it has a strong start, but tapers off later.

The New World - According to the premise, the author liked the idea of Randidly Ghosthound (ugh) above, and wrote his own take on it. I think if I'll give either a try, it'll be this one.

The Iron Teeth - a goblin point-of-view story, in a brutal, bleak world. I've heard about this before, I want to read it at some point, but haven't been on the mood for bleak dark stuff. I'll get back to it at some point.

The Arcane Emperor - an OP magic-user's rise to power, after he accidentally magics himself to a new world. I'd be much more interested this if I hadn't just read The Throne of Magical Arcana, which has a similar premise, but happened to be by far the best take on this idea I've ever read, and one of the best Reincarnator stories too. Reading it right now would be unfair to it, but I'll give it a go at some later point.

A Snake's Life sounds interesting, and wasn't mentioned in the relatively recent thread asking about non-human protagonists.

The Wandering Inn - it's only the story novel about the business of a (magical/fantasy) inn that I know of, and seems to have more of a typical fantasy theme than the other one (Clean Sweep is more of an urban fantasy story).

I'll definitely be reading more of Andur's stories. Large Chests, No Epic Loot and Wandering Inn seem like lighter stories than Andur's typical fare, though, so I guess I'll start with one of those. A Snake's Life seem interesting too. The other stuff seems a bit heavier, so I'll get back to them later.

Thanks for the recs so far!

    K. Just want to let you know, but Wandering Inn isn't what I would call particularly light. It is by no means a sort of Japanese light novel where the MC founds an inn and it's entirely slice of life. While Inn certainly does have a lot of slice of life, it is also a story set in a quite dark world, full of monsters with "civilization" constantly beating back the tides of barbarity. And even the civilizations by no means are perfect often being just as prone to prejudice and intolerance as we are. So don't go into it expecting a completely happy-go-lucky story.

    More recommendations! Awesome!

I read about Large Chests. It is OK, but the side-focus on masochistic rape / torture as a slapstick got old kinda fast, and it seemed to get more and more screentime as the story went on. Dropped.

I'll give No Epic Loot a try, before checking and writingy thoughts on the new recommendations.

Edit: thanks for the additional details on Wandering Inn. I'll keep that in mind, but it still sounds like relatively light reading, even if it has some heavier themes mixed in. For me, heavy or dark themes is something like Gavriel Kay's The Fionavar Tapestry. Now that was dark, sheesh.

I caught up with No Loot But Puns. A weird combination of naïveté and cynical commercialisation. The dungeon and the characters are all built up to be perfectly good people existing peacefully together despite their pasts/deeds/natures. At the same time, the story keeps emphasising how humanity perverts good things in pursuit of profit.
Worthy effort and a nice read, some nice moments and characters, and the world building includes some really interesting and well thought ideas.
The author's inexperience is clear, too, with some typos, and some unclear moments where it's difficult to tell the writer's intention.

Also, yes the MC of Randidly Ghosthound's name is Randidly Ghosthound. I honestly couldn't get through three chapters of it.

The Arcane Emperor got kinda generic, so I've put it on hold and maybe I'll pick it back up.

Everyone Loves Large Chests does devolve into slapstick gore/vore that really turned me off. In fact the author's sense of humor in general was really blase to me.

The Iron Teeth is quite excellent. It doesn't revolve nearly as much around visceral gore like ELLC. It is however unafraid to pull its punches when conflict occurs and is set in a frontier land where life is cheap, monsters abound and people are trying to become the ruler of this unclaimed land. So there definitely is darkness and bleakness there, particularly because the MC is by no means OP. @ClearMadness , the author is also a member of the forum if you want to chat with him.

I also would likely to add my recommendation to @Dantalion 's Re:Write, which is quite possibly the best story with an OP/God-like figure as its MC. It really takes a thoughtful approach to how that might be and feel for someone who initially starts as a normal human like us. I really do recommend you check it out.

I also have some other Western English Original Webnovels not on RRL that I can also recommend, if you would like. In fact many of these novels aren't published solely on RRL and there are extra stuff posted on the main website that can't be found on RRL.

Thanks for the recs, Iron Teeth and Re:write are looking quite strong.

I've read several of the more well known Western webnovels that aren't on RRL. Wildbow's stuff, Playing For Keeps (since published & moved offline), Practical Guide To Evil and Mother of Learning, at least. Oh, and The Last Angel on spacebattles forum.

If you have other recommendations, sure!

Also, a weird thing - both Large Chests and No Loot But Puns had an off-handed joke about crazy feminists (author Q&A in the former) and overly sensitive minorities (elders roleplaying, not DnD but P.DnD.L.G.B.T.W.T.F. or something in the latter). It was a bit weird to have that happen in the first two random stories I picked. Is that a thing on Royalroadl?

New Journey of an Old Soul - what's this about the author copying parts from published books (a review on first page refers to a board game reference alegedlycopied from Raven's Shadow)? The theme is also not my thing, and the writing didn't catch my interest. Pass.

A Snake Story - the writing is decent, but the ideas are just not polished enough. The first, abnormal rank-up being enabled before the protagonist has learned to move or hunt? A snake biting into a carnivorois deer and pulling it up into a tree... with its fangs?

Dungeon Heart - the writer's thought process is obvious, and the ideas might be fun, but the world he writes doesn't logically support it. A master crafter without any crafts or materials to claim? Living in 4 rooms inside a mountain, with 1 km entrance corridor? Skipping uncommon and rare starting choices for the most common one (animals), explained away by him making a mistake based on misinformation despite him seeking to make an informed choice to the best of his knowledge? Pass. I'm interested though, when did dungeons become a subgenre & which was the first? Dungeon Keeper Ami is the earliest I know (2009).

Wandering Inn is good, though. I just hit a minor snag at 1.14 with the "shopping trip" - no one can be so oblivious.

Thanks for the recommendations! I'll write my further thoughts on this thread on a different forum subsection so I don't have to keep bumping this one.
