nothing really new actually. co-piloting with sexual position has been done years before, and i remember Vandread was like that too.

each time the mc's vanguard 'combine' with any of the female pilot's 'dread', they'll end up with different position.

however, i must say that story wise, Vandread is far superior to Franxx. A pity during late 90s - early 2000s, japanese studios were experimenting and trying to switch to using cg animation to cut cost, leading to ugly graphics in a lot of supposedly would've been excellent anime series. I'm willing to bet, gundam seed/destiny would've look 10 times better if not for the shoddy cg attempt.

There's an old OVA series called "Devadasy" where this was the plot. It's still something I watch frequently. It's pretty scary. Humanity just about gets wiped out.

If we look at the basic desire, 'Reproducing', we are met with a topic known as Sexuality. Sexuality is a topic that isn't properly explored but it can essentially summed up to, "What you find Attractive". For example, if an animal engages in a homosexual relationship. This will sate the Sexual need. Even if the act doesn't produce any children. But for an intelligent lifeform, such as Humans. The topic becomes far more complex.

Humans can sate their Sexual desires by merely watching Food being cooked... or water moving down the river. We, as a Lifeform can get Mental satisfaction that can offset our Physical needs in the topic of Sex. How ever, if you were to place humans naked on an isle, our physical desires will rise once more. See the complexity of this? Basically, our society has evolved to a point, where someone can easily offset Sexual desires and you can raise children with Sexual ignorance.

There is a reason why Power Outage for a long duration of time, tends to be the culprit of sudden Baby Booms. But IF you can raise a child by focusing all his/her focus on other things... You can raise a child that doesn't know squat about Sex even if they have a friend of the opposite gender.

Now, FranXX is supposed to be a Mecha built around the Bond between Partners. Therefore compatibility is important which results in certain individuals being unable to pair. Because of this, it can be theorized that the machine takes away your Sexual desire because of the 'connection' process. If your Sexual desire is sated, your mind will not think about it. Some people find lack of sexual desire toward their siblings, which can also make them Naive.

There is a reason, why people tend to say, "One become a Sage after Climax". Because once your mind has been sated, you will not think about it further.

TLDR; If the human mind is occupied by other thoughts and needs. It can easily offset any Sexual desire or Sexual exploration.
