It's a completely random thing I've started to wonder about going back home from work (traffic jam, anyone? I'ts great before dinner :blobexpressionless:). Native speakers, nothing for you here, move along :blobcheeky:.

In my case, it was like this: I've started learning it at school, then I started watching anime and reading manga. In those times, anime and manga were practically impossible to get in my country - there were some translated series, but not many. So, what was I supposed to do?
Then there were books. Cliffhangers, as the translation hadn't caught up? Publisher dropped the series? I could still read it in their original language.

Yep, exactly, that's my reason for learning English. Job prospects? Is it eadible?

    So, how about you?

It can be considered my first language, though my mother tongue is Mandarin Chinese. Cuz the big bro says English is a international language and everyone needs to learn.

When I was 12 and I saw something about Team Fortress 2 online, I convinced my parents to get it for me for Christmas. Since I had NO clue how anything worked, as this was the first big game I legitimately bought and played, I was clueless. I ended up playing on American servers (am from EU) and everyone was of course talking English. Coupled with what I learned in school I just picked up over the years. Nothing teaches language better than wanting to communicate or consume media man

To play and understand more games, to read more Inuyasha fanfics, to read more hentai (lol). My school was useless, they didn't know how to properly teach English (or just how to teach me, who knows). Yeah, almost all I learned of english was self-taught, a lot of google, google translator and reading, haha.

I was like, learning it out of obligation at first. because of school and stuff. Since English is not my native.
From reading some manga, my English was becoming weirder.
Reading some novels, my English was becoming more weirder than before.
And finally go back textbook to fix them. lol
Playing some game, and becoming more confused. since a lot of people using an abbreviation.

School does require it to be studied, and also a very rude remark from my elementary school teacher that i can not even converse or read english words properly(im even on 6th grade that time and he said that in front of the class)... i started watching american movies and read its subtitle if there is available.

Ended up getting addicted to English novels at first because the books they published in my country aren't fit into my liking.

Well for me, I was playing Harvest Moon: Wonderful Life, and was trying to marry Celia, but can't understand any of the dialogue, so I opened a dictionary for the first time, two years later or so I could speak English well enough to get a passing grade from my school.

why i learn, because of school. its a mandatory subject. twas a pain at first, but then playstation came along and i'm getting tired of dying from a manticore and not knowing what to do in final fantasy 5, so slow and steady from there.
