Discussion How do you view rape for novels?

I've seen alot of people enraged at that they dropped the novel straight away like Chu feng in MGA even though its a very cruel society that rape is not uncommon(though i dropped MGA Since in my opinion not only the mc even the story is shit or repettive)
though there are novels as well that has rape that has high rating like Pure Love ✕ Insult Complex that are in the modern time(means rape are less since there are law enforcers) or atleast its not common to some country(like the setting in Pure Love ✕ Insult Complex in JP) what are your views about that though since i myself has an apathy of a personality that has really no clue WTF is with people reaction, Do you like care or get offended or just the same as me that has literally has no feelings or reactions to it

 

To me it's just another thing. It's a plot device so I don't see a need to veiw it strongly one way or another.

 

I don't even care when someone is get raped irl, except if it's someone i know, yeah, i'm heartless like that

But seriously though, while there are scenarios presented to us in novels where rape is justified for some reason for another (Like to save their life or something), one is forced to question the motives of an author who decides to have a character of theirs rape another. The problem is not that there was rape, but that the author sought to not only include rape, but even justify it rather than damn it as the horrible thing it is

Of course if the rapee in question is an antagonistic person, I'm always up for hating someone who's about to get their face caved in

Tl;Dr: Rape (in novels) is ultimately a literary tool. While I don't advocate its use in literature, it's more important that a writer understand why they are using and what their use of it says about their views on it. It should never be justified or used without thought.

EDIT: As for rape in porn.. That's a bit of a grey area (I ain't touching the ethicality of that with a ten foot pole!)

why would it be offensive?
if a rape victim (or related to one) starts reading a story that has rape in it and he/she gets offended then that's just his/her circumstances and he/she is at fault for knowing that he/she doesn't like rape but not checking the tags
rape itself is never offensive as long as it's in a story/novel just like any other acts we frown upon
people may drop novels for the rape but that doesn't mean that it's offensive

It makes me uncomfortable, but as long as it's in novel, I don't really mind. Well, except those JN with MC that spend their time raping girl left and right, it's just disgusting and I seriously hope that the author didn't have a mindset like that.

 

How we see rape is usually dependent on how the author portrays it. It's usually disgusting and the author portrays it as such, but there's plenty of dub con or different circumstances that try to get the readers' sympathy.

Even though it was rape, Against the Gods and Skyfire (?) Avenue tried to justify their male leads raping women. Oh, it was a misunderstanding or it was to get our cultivation back.

I honestly hate these novels, but I also read plenty of yaoi with rape so I'm trash >.> and it comes down to your personal bottom line

 

I've drop several CHN novel 'cause of that. 'coz if I want to read such of thing, I'll just go to real adult site i/o reading them

Why don't you check the tags before? And if there isn't a tag and it still happens and ruins the story for you, why do you complain instead of lamenting your inability to enjoy the story from merely 1 thing that happened in it?

not calling any people in this thread out but I've seen maaaaaaaaaaaany complaints about rape scenes in novels so I'm curious (and looking down on some people)

It is a novel, if I am to feel disgusted about anything, it is the hypocrism where MC gets the good guy card even if he massacres or enslaves an entire race, rapes and mindbroke women to add to his harem and do horrendous shits. It becomes less humorous all of a sudden when it happened to the MC.

If the scene is nicely done, I am sick of jade rabbits.

Yet in all blunt honesty, I just don't care, I am up for the ride, watching a life of a person. I can get myself into character, I can get myself out. Heck, sometimes I root for the evil overlord cuz I hate the MC.

 

It is fiction. I give fiction a lot of freedom. Murder, torture, rape... all allowed. What is not acceptable sometimes is why are these things in there and how it is handled. Many of these cheap fiction here just use these events for sensationalism. It's cheap, and vulgar without any consideration to what these events really entails. It is the most tasteless emotional manipulation born from uncaring and uncreative minds for the pleasure of similarly tasteless readers.

It depends. If the one who committed it is the MC and he/she has established a trash character, then whatever. If he/she was established as an upright character then, meh. Good if he/she repents and tries to do whatever he/she can do to make up for it. Now if the antagonist did it to one of the MC's man/woman, then fuck them to oblivion I say and drop the novel for my kokoro can't handle netorare, but I sure do indulge myself in netori. If the antagonist did it to some random man/woman just to get some reaction from the readers or to establish his/her character, then meh.

Disgusting and completely unnecessary, the only reason it is used is to justify wanting to kill someone or a character ending up mental.
Mentioning that the person was raped as a means to create a backstory is another thing all together, for example: a man or woman mentions that he was raised as a pleasure slave to reason the fact he hates the rich or powerful.
But when people say they had to rape someone to balance the elements in their bodies I just call it bullshit reason to say you don´t know how to get in someone's pants and thus cant write it out.
