I didn't read the raws but I suspect mc and ml were lovers before and mc kill himself for ml ? Because he said he was familiar with the hall of nightmares which people killed themselves hoping to reincarnate with their lover or were criminals sentenced to death ! There's a chance mc was a scientist there as well !
Agree with that lovers suspicion too I like that too if only I didn't get mislead by the name of the characters a few times when I MTLed I remembered crying for the side characters though in earlier chapters I will MTL again after my brain cleared a bit from the previous effect

Meh. I skimmed a few chapters and this is definitely the type of story that makes my blood pressure go up. But that's not because its bad though. There was a fluffy hermaphrodite story I read a few weeks ago where I wanted the MC to be flogged, die 10000x, and then drop his naked, dead body off in front of the ML. May they suffer in H*ll together. One living and one dead. MC's only sin was being weak, annoying, and hopelessly slutty. This one is an aggressively unfair and serious setting that's not smutty at all. The keyword is smut. So yeah... I'd say it's just my preferences.
Yeah, the setting has potential to be smutty though, but then it's a really serious setting so your blood pressure is guaranteed to shoot up at least in the early story
