Does anyone know how to disable the part of the touchpad over the mouse buttons so that when I click it doesn't move the cursor? everything online that I found is over 4 years ago and I can't make sense of it.

edit: it's not the whole touchpad I want to disable just the part where the mouse buttons are as the buttons are part of the touchpad

usually there is a button next to the pad where you can switch it on and off and there are also different key combos so you can turn it on and off.

there is a option in settings where you can turn off the keypad if you are typing as to not accidentally move the cursor, or click on something.

Usually tapping twice or thrice on the corner does it. A small light will go on and you should get an alert.

you can disable just part of the touchpad and not the whole thing? i don't think there's a way to do that
if you want to disable the whole touchpad there should be a function key + F# button combination for that

You can entirely disable the touchpad by uninstalling it in device manager, and just use a mouse.

There should be a program on the laptop that can automatically turn off the touch pad whenever a mouse is connected...

It's a laptop though and the touchpad is plug-and-play so that once he restarts it'll automatically reinstall itself....It's to avoid losing any control over it when you do full formats or actually put a new hard drive in the laptop.

You can't simply turn off the touchpad but not the right and left click.

Depends on the OEM brand, there are some settings that decrease the sensitivity of the touchpad to make it less sensitive while typing, or setting a deadzone for scroll area, but AFAIK there's no such thing for when using its own buttons.

You can, however, use any mouse to avoid using the touchpad.

Mine is a HP Probook 4730s and it has a light small light in the top left corner which if you double tap it quickly, it turns on and shuts off the built in mouse.
