Would say The Count of Monte Cristo for non-fantasy and The Malazan Book of the Fallen for fantasy.

Ikr , The problem with Tolkien is basically ,how much detail he puts to everything , family trees, history of the land. A description of a city could span across 10 pages sometimes , depending on the authors mood.

For me personally the description has to be rich , but compact. I don't want to "see" every door handle so to speak, I just want to see the overall look and leave most of it to my imagination.

Amateur novels have the opposite problem, they're all action , but not enough descriptions .I read a novel recently, where 90% of it was prompts from the "system" eg. Strenghty +1 , new perk unlocked etc.
and 10 % of it was just guff.
