Specifically, I am looking for a long-term time loop or repeated time travel story, where the main character has to go through the same events many times, and grows in both power and wisdom. Examples are Mother of Learning, and Re: Zero the anime.

Ps. I just finished every chapter of Mother of Learning posted, does anyone know how often/when it updates?

It updates approximately once a month. You're in for the long haul. *Pats*

Yeah, I also really like the groundhog day format, but it's rare as balls :(

Oh, just remembered about a tv show that I really liked called Day Break, it's only 13 episodes but it fits the genera.
I think I was a little disappointed that further on the series some stuff will carry over loop iterations, but it's still worth a watch.

It's a horribly difficult format to write well because you're constantly repeating events, it's a limited time format, and you're forced to use tropes like MC going nuts due to continuous reboots.

You're not forced to, in fact I only remember the protagonist going a little bonkers in groundhog day ( and that one episode of supernatural if I recall correctly). And I understand in his case where I estimate that he spent decades in that loop without a clue on how it happened and how to stop it. It doesn't have to be such a long loop though!
I guess it's a format that appeals to the control freak in me that wants to explore every possibility, every variation to optimize results...

kind makes you wonder why no game has yet to use this idea, it would work really well with the idea of a save system linked to it. like you character realises everytime he dies he goes back to a "save point"... sounds like a fun mechanic. then autocheckpoints without the ability to manually save would make sense.

In order to make it seem natural, you do have to use these plot devices. I mean, it's true that there's nothing written where people have to go crazy if they repeat a time period over and over again, but it does sound psychologically accurate. And on the positive side, in these stories, once it happens it precludes a big change in thinking where they realize that they themselves have room to grow. I.e. If you can't change the world, you can change yourself.

And I doubt it was a little bonkers. At one point in the movie, the MC was trying to take his life. Sure it was done in silly ways and the end result is waking up in the morning. But in the grand scheme of things, he was trying to end the loops using a way that most sane people generally reserve for the last resort.

Reminds me of a song about a boy and girl on a playground, both keep reliving the day trying to save the other, only to watch each other die again and again.

The first and last volumes of Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria. Unfortunately, you'll have to go hunting for their translations because the old ones got taken down. I forgot where I found them when I read it.
