Discussion Has anyone ever been called a Communist for liking Chinese novels?

I'm Brazilian, and my country is going through a very tense political moment. Basically, everyone who has more social ideas or positions (and this includes the cause of discrimination against black people and LGBT people) are being called communists, socialists, in a very offensive sense. Of course there are people calling themselves communists, who are deserving of being insulted in every possible way. And everyone in politics is corrupt, but there are lambs who believe that their candidate is the savior of the motherland.
So everyone fights with everyone for anything...
And since last year I'm in love with Chinese novels, and they're being a source of inspiration for me as an wannabe writer. But sometimes the insult appears, and I aways have to justify to everyone that I'm nott, I don't keep reading communist propaganda in my free time. In fact, I haven't even seen any mention of communism or the communist party in my readings...
And I wanted to hear from you. Not your political position, but if you have had to deal with "something of communism" for liking Chinese novels.

Ps .: no, I'm not a communist. My current situation is "without political position and revolted by the clownishness that social movements have become in my country"

Joke aside, no I haven't been called a communist for reading CN novels because no one irl knows I read CN novels.

 

And those that read Lolita are pedos, the ones that watch brokeback mountain are gay and Rock and roll corrupts the youth.

My history teacher once told us "Get this through your heads, snowflakes. One day you are going to be called a socialist or a communist no matter what you do. At that point just walk away from that person."

 

In Indonesia.
If you crossed swords with the conservative or the Islamist people, they either label you as Communist, or Liberalist (both have negative connotation here) So yeah, labelling as a way to insult the other party is normal here.

Also, antiChinese sentiment is quite high, from illegal China workers issue to the the usual China trying to take over the world...

EDIT: Chinese is a rather significant nonnative minorities here in Indonesia, with quite economic hold on local business. Basically, they are the "jew" in Indonesian mindset. (Not to insult real Jews though)

 

A book i read once said, Left will keep growing more and more Left, while you don't move alongside you'll end up being more and more Right.

 

People expect me to be able to speak Chinese when I told them that I read CN novels.

My friends and family didn't accuse me of being communist for liking CN novel though. It kinda stupid when you think of it.

 

Try telling them you play loli dating sims or about your harem plans.

 

If someone insults you as communist you should give them a dollar and call them capitalist swine because they only take from you- or insult them as Trump voters: I bet if you'd live in the USA you'd have voted for Trump!

Or to be serious: Just tell those idiots what genre you're reading - maybe romance like in any other country? Or do you read cultivaton novels with magic fights who kill anyone who insults them? Speculative-Fiction with a mental-broken brained goddess Raven12345?

socialism and communism are garbage, leaving that clear then:

why do you have to justify yourself? is freedom of speech, creed or religion, illegal on your country?
people will always look for ways to harm others, is human nature.
you shouldn't justify yourself, people will always says whatever they want and try to harm others, you justifying yourself is giving them more way to keep going for you.

 

I mean, there are some CN WN which are super patriotic/racist or think Communism or Confucianism is super awesome, and it would be reasonable to expect CN WN to be colored by Chinese culture and social values, but 95-99% of the time that CN WN about a cultivator in another world getting into magic fights with an ultra powerful cheat weapon he found when he fell off a cliff doesn't have anything to do with this or that economic or political ideology.

 

Don't worry about that. Just think of them as people with low self-esteem. There are always going to be people that see things as black and white.

 

Nothing wrong with communism.

Only problem with it is humans are too innately greedy for it to work. It results in going from the ideal, we're all equal to "All are equal but some are more equal than others"

When people use communist as an insult, it's typically because they don't know/understand what communism actually wants.

 

Aint communism pretty much tossed on the trashheap of history? The hybrid socialism works though. The only "working" country with communism is probably Cuba atm? As for your question regarding China, only idiots think they are communists these days.

 

Be proud of what you like! I would just ignore that person if they were a stranger. But if they were someone I was close with, I would go through the extra effort and try to explain that reading Chinese novels does not make one communist.

 

Really don't see how either of those are insults and how this wouldn't make you look retarded.

 

communism hasn't worked in any place, they haven't reach the "goal" and in place has become the place for a few families to be perpetuated in the power.

socialism is supposed to be a transition phase to communism, which haven't worked either.

I don't know if I'm surrounded by more tolerant people, or it's the carefulness I have when interacting in real life, but I don't get called that (at least not for my hobbies).
Do you tell people too much about yourself? Few people I know even understand what a chinese novel is. And I don't expose much about what I like until I see the other person is interested or that it's safe to talk about it without being judged.
