I heard that Disney is making the real life version of Mulan.
It was said that the actress playing Mulan is Liu Yifei. Is she a good actress? Is her singing skills good? And also her martial arts?
One of my favorite movies is Mulan. I really want to know if it will meet my expectations.
Are they going to choose mostly Chinese actors for the movie or are they going to add Western actors?
If you got any news about the movie, please inform me here too.
Also, if you catch any wind to other Disney movies, please give me a heads up.
(I don't want to be like that person I was when everyone was singing, "Let it Go" and while I was still "Tangled":blob_grin:Get it?)

Well if they don't take Netflix advice on live action animated movie or TV series then it should be okay.

Liu Yifei she an alrightactress I guess. Not the best but the Chinese love her a lot well last time I use to watch their tv shows/movies. She played in the best version of Return of the Condor Heroes. She was also in that movie forbidden kingdom.

Only Disney live action I'm looking forward to is Aladdin and I have no high hopes.

Yes, she is (subjective opinion, be advised), though I don't know whether she'd be a good fit for the role.

I first saw her in the 2006 remake of "Return of The Condor Heroes", where she played as Xiao Longnu. I was instantly a fan of her. IMHO, that was the best Xiao Longnu play to date, and I've seen several rendition of the series. Readers of classic wuxia series would know, Xiao Longnu in the book was depicted as, due to her upbringing, someone both innocent (rather naive, in fact) and cold. Liu Yifei pretty much nailed it. She's not a martial artist though, and her action scenes are mostly from wuxia movies.

However, I really doubt whether she'd be a good fit for Mulan. She's on the petite side, physically, and frankly, looks rather fragile. Mulan (at least the Disney version), looks pretty stocky for a female. She'd pass for a guy, although a somewhat short and good-looking guy. Still, not extreme enough to arouse suspicion, just by the looks alone. Liu Yifei, however, simply cannot look like a guy. She's too thin and her facial features are too feminine. Google her pictures, and you'll see what I mean.

Edit: Oh, and I hope they won't ask her to act in English. That'd be awkward.

Tsiek tsiek and again tsiek tsiek,
    Mu-lan weaves, facing the door.
You don't hear the shuttle's sound,
    You only hear Daughter's sighs.
They ask Daughter who's in her heart,
They ask Daughter who's on her mind.
"No one is on Daughter's heart,
No one is on Daughter's mind.
Last night I saw the draft posters,
The Khan is calling many troops,
The army list is in twelve scrolls,
On every scroll there's Father's name.
    Father has no grown-up son,
    Mu-lan has no elder brother.
I want to buy a saddle and horse,
And serve in the army in Father's place."
In the East Market she buys a spirited horse,
In the West Market she buys a saddle,
In the South Market she buys a bridle,
In the North Market she buys a long whip.
At dawn she takes leave of Father and Mother,
In the evening camps on the Yellow River's bank.
She doesn't hear the sound of Father and Mother calling,
She only hears the Yellow River's flowing water cry tsien tsien.
At dawn she takes leave of the Yellow River,
In the evening she arrives at Black Mountain.
She doesn't hear the sound of Father and Mother calling,
She only hears Mount Yen's nomad horses cry tsiu tsiu.
She goes ten thousand miles on the business of war,
She crosses passes and mountains like flying.
Northern gusts carry the rattle of army pots,
Chilly light shines on iron armor.
Generals die in a hundred battles,
Stout soldiers return after ten years.
On her return she sees the Son of Heaven,
The Son of Heaven sits in the Splendid Hall.
He gives out promotions in twelve ranks
And prizes of a hundred thousand and more.
The Khan asks her what she desires.
"Mu-lan has no use for a minister's post.
I wish to ride a swift mount
To take me back to my home."
When Father and Mother hear Daughter is coming
They go outside the wall to meet her, leaning on each other.
When Elder Sister hears Younger Sister is coming
She fixes her rouge, facing the door.
When Little Brother hears Elder Sister is coming
He whets the knife, quick quick, for pig and sheep.
"I open the door to my east chamber,
I sit on my couch in the west room,
I take off my wartime gown
And put on my old-time clothes."
Facing the window she fixes her cloudlike hair,
Hanging up a mirror she dabs on yellow flower powder
She goes out the door and sees her comrades.
Her comrades are all amazed and perplexed.
    Traveling together for twelve years
    They didn't know Mu-lan was a girl.
"The he-hare's feet go hop and skip,
The she-hare's eyes are muddled and fuddled.
Two hares running side by side close to the ground,
How can they tell if I am he or she?"

    there the whole movie.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but I have a feeling the movie is going to be a disaster.
    1. It is not going to be a musical. (Bummer maybe just for me?)
    2. Completely new plot
      1. no Shang, no trio
      2. Mulan gets a new sister
      3. No fight with the Huns - Villain is an evil witch:blobconfused:
There are a lot of other dubious things, but just a gist of everything I have heard of that seems like a catastrophe waiting to happen.

I hope they don't make a musical of it this time, it was fine in the animated version, but I rather not see it in a live-action version.

Well, there are versions of her story where she has a sister, though I don't know how historically accurate those are. Then again, I don't know if Hua Mulan herself is historical. She might just be a myth.

Musical is up to debate. I think it can be fine without or with, although I prefer it with. Also out of a financial standpoint, it would surprise me. Disney is an empire founded on nostalgia, all the live action movies are just trying to cash in the nostalgic factors of the audience that grew up, as can be seen in their best example of live version of Beauty and the Beast. It would be nothing without the musicals.

But what really, really irks me is that they have changed the entire plot and most of all the villain. It undercuts the clear message of the movie and instead, this sends such a dubious message, too. Like, oh only a female can defeat an evil female instead of a woman,:blobconfused: who acts on filial piety goes out to a journey to discover herself and by doing that, rescuing (and bringing honour) to her country.

Not expecting too much. Don't want to get my hopes up then get a disappointing movie in the end. I dunno how they can make this as close to the original. From the points listed from the poster above better not expect anything at all.

100% agree with this comment - I've loved Liu Yifei since I saw her in 'Return of the Condor Heroes' - her acting of Xiao Longnu was impeccable, and while I love Mulan and am super hyped at the idea of a live remake I am a little iffy about her as the main character - I'm not overly concerned about her not being able to act or play the fighting scenes because I'm sure she'll be fine with those, but my first concern was about her physical build which as was mentioned above, Liu Yifei is quite the feminine beauty and I just cannot imagine seeing her pass off as an acceptable 'dude' like Amanda Bynes managed to in 'She's the Man'.

I'd still watch it, just cause I love Mulan and Liu Yifei but I'm just hoping with all my heart that they manage to pull off the whole cross-dressing as a guy well XD

In my mind, Disney and musical are like conjoined twins. If there's no song, it's not Disney movie. Which movie of Disney doesn't have a song? If there is, it can only be counted by hand.
