All conscious living beings are masochistic. If we weren't would we still be alive? I mean come on dude everyone knows life is pain so the simple act of living is already a masochistic tendency. Beyond that I don't think I have any serious desires to explore that aspect of Sadomasochism, I'm pretty sure I lean more towards the sadistic side of the scale, I prefer the dominant position or the one that inflicts the pain, rather than the one that submits or receives the pain.
With my limited knowledge, those that like spicy food are mashocist as spicy is a sense in the category of pain. I think.
I feel that there's a difference from doing something stupid because you'd rather enjoy a moment now rather than later due to circumstance despite having to despair later on and intentionally inflicting suffering upon yourself because you enjoy it.
Honestly using the example you provided I gotta disagree, M's actively seek pain to feel pleasure and enjoy it while when I pick up some bottom of the barrel novel it's more like "I know I will regret reading this later, but there's nothing else to read"
I'm pretty sure I lean more on the masochistic side. Not purely a closet one too 'coz some of my friends knows I 'enjoy' pain and sometimes 'seek' for it. Ah, but most likely not on the sexual way(yet) though. More on injuries, and self-loathing episodes. Once in a while, I let people hurt and take advantage of me purposely too. I have various reasons for doing that, but I know deep inside me I 'want' the feeling it cause. Also, I'm pretty sure most of your examples can't be considered as being an M. Well, a lot of people now used these terms on simple things but I think these tendencies (being an M or S) runs deep inside a person that you wont even want to look into it..
