Discussion When most of the NU pages are filled with Qidian webnovels...

I'm starting to resent this site's concept.
Because it only accepts translated webnovels, Qidian appears to have the monopoly on the webnovel industry.

Now the pages of Novelupdate are filled with Qidian novels, it's at the point that NU appears to be the advertiser of Qidian.

On translated webnovels, there won't be any competition, everyone knows it. China is a major source of translated webnovels, where Qidian already dominates the scene.

That's why I think NU will stop to exist very soon unless it evolves to something that gathers both translated and original webnovels. Maybe form ties with original webnovel hosting website?
Another option is to associate with Qidian to promote their webnovels.

 

But you could just use release filter on Qidian...

 

I don't really notice this cause i filter Q from my update list, but to newcomers, yeah, its like blatantly making them inquisitive of Q... welp, capitalism for the win i guess?

 

Or you could just say Tony is being a bit lazy.
Though that's a discredit to him since he mostly does stuff alone.

I do however agree that NU needs to evolve. It's becoming a stale website in my opinion and it needs to grow. It needs to adress problem that currently exist and prepared to theoretical troubles that might come up.

 

And what you describe only happens at 3 ám gtm due the fact that qidian releases all its premium novels at the same time

 

Not just newcomers, but also those who are too lazy to create an NUF account.

 

Qidian is slowly taking over the NU...

I think it's fine as it is. If it started linking to original novels as well that would probably be one of the worst outcomes. Yes there are plenty of Qidian novels but there are many, many other novels that we just flat out wouldn't be aware of if not for NU. (Also there are only about 4-5 pages of updates a day anyways so it isn't too hard to just scroll through.)

 

but why isn't jp or kr major tl'ers don't employ a strategy like Q? just curious.. yeah i know of preemium, buy only stuff, but i mean why not do the freeemiumm model like Q also? makes me wonder..

 

If you don't like Qidian or want people to read their novels, then bringing to attention that qidian has lots and lots of novels they update almost daily doesn't really help your cause.

But have you considered that there's also a fair amount of original novels on qidian which would be included if we included them ?

It's just they released massive chapter. Just filter it and you'll be fine

Well you do see Qidan all over NU. But if you click on them you realise that half of them are barely worth a 3 star, unlike Qidan which blantantl shows it's novel being 4 star +.

So it's not bad...
Plus u have the release filters. Lol.

 

my thing is, if i like the novel idc about the poster but.
yeah qidian is pretty spammy. i think we should make bulk releases by a single translator into one collapsible category
or turn multiple releases of the same novel into 1 "chapter xx - chapter xxx" format so it doesnt spam

 

Yenpress had something like this but they failed hard for JP novels.

 

Well, this is based on translated webnovels. So yeah, Qidian release at least 40% of the webnovels showing on NU.

It's not a problem of seeing or hiding Qidian. If you don't want to read Qidian webnovels then you could hide all their chapters.
The point is that this site is restricted to release only translated webnovels, when Qidian is already the major contributor to the world's translated webnovels. If you are following Qidian novels, you could just follow them on their site.

So if we remove Qidian, what do we have left? Will the future of NU only focus on the sparse translation websites, who for many reasons don't want to steal Chinese webnovels from Qidian? So only Japanese, Korean and Indian webnovels?
Or be a stage for the major webnovel companies to operate their business (Qidian, Gravity Tales, Novel Universe International)
