Synopsis, reviews (sometimes), and genre(s) but like a lot of people it's really instinct most times. Cuz you never know until you actually read it for yourself.

I read synopsis first. If it's my cup of tea, I give it a 5 chapter rule before deciding whether I'll follow it or not.

I read it's description and then I try reading it for a bit.

I avoid JP or KR since I don't like em.

I randomly take a look at things that pop up on the front page when I'm not familiar with their titles, or if I'm really bored I'll specifically use the series finder feature to filter for some things to browse through.

If the synopsis looks interesting and the ratings aren't abysmal (I usually don't bother with anything below 3.9* on NU) then I skim through the comments and get a sense for what people think about the novel.

Another thing I do is look at the histogram of rating count vs rating number. If the histogram looks exponential, I'll briefly consider the harsh reviews. If however the histogram looks bimodal, then I'll likely ignore the harsher reviews as its far more likely to be something to do with nitpicking a particular element of the story that people don't like (a common one is "racism" or rape).

I'm very open when it comes to tags and as long as it's an interesting read I'll read it - regardless of how insulting or offensive it may come off to others.

First is genre and tag, then the general rating, and the 2-stars long reviews.

When it comes to Chinese books intended for male audiences, my criterion is the author. If the book is written by Yue Guan, I'll read it.

:hmm:It's hard to resist looking at book covers in choosing what to read but yeah, Don't judge the book by it's cover.

As for me, I look at the title and then, read the synopsis. Next, read the reviews and look for the low rating reviews and will decide if I will read it. Though sometimes, I don't look at the reviews and will read the few chapters and will decide if it's in my taste.

I look at tags and try to avoid ones that I can't find myself to like, at the same time I avoid taking reviews or ratings for real.

    1) exclude yaoi, shota, slice of life, JP novels

After that i try to make sure it has decent plot based on description, tags and reviews. Cover art is not important to me, it brings no value to the novel. If it's only available on QI aggregator sites are the only option, otherwise just read using NU links.
