I like to think that that's was not exactly the case. I believe that when JFM got married to Madam Yu, he was indeed still in love with WWX's mother while Madam Yu was clearly in love with him. As time past, he ended up loving Madam Yu, but it was too late as her love for him had already turned sour. Perhaps there was also a time when things were starting looking good between them, but then JFM found little WWX, and by adopting him, things went bad again. I think they did have multiple discussions on that but every one of them ended up with Madam Yu bringing up the WWX matter (as she does in the present), insinuating that JFM's weakness towards him was only proof of his lingering affection towards WWX's mother. I think the only thing that could perhaps persuade Madam Yu about JFM love for her, would be for him to forfeit WWX and that ofc was out of the question. I got that little theory of mine after watching the donghua. JFM displays as much bitterness as Madam Yu, not with his words but with his facial expressions. It clearly pains him to see her having such a wrong impression but he knows that there's nothing that can be done to correct it. I only hope that within their last moments he somehow managed to finally get across his love to her. :'(
