Discussion Things that immediately turn you off or make you stop reading

Reused plot lines...

Though yeah, it could be bearable at times, but if that plot line is used for the nth time, it just becomes plain boring

 

MC is an immortal or has a background in some immortal realm and reincarnates/returns to China and still has fucking nationalism in his mind. Wdf, you're maybe thousands of years old and seen millions of scenes and images yet 10 years of China brainwashing is THAT fucking effective!?

 

1. Nationalism , racism.
2. Bad/cringy romance.
3. Over caring male lead.
4.self righteous mc.
5. Mc trying to act smart but is stupid.
6. Harem members falling for mc for no reason at all.
7. Yaoi

 

Funny how most "modern day settings" Chinese novels have such backward ideology no?

 

For media that I'm reading casually (most novels I'm reading on NU):

• incoherence (in writing or in storyline)
• romantic sex [IDK it just makes me really uncomfortable for some reason]
• extremely poor writing or grammar

For media that I'm reading for the faps:

• story feels too boring or uninteresting to me (in the case that there is story)
• prominence of armpit hair or generally body hair (arms, legs, stomach, pubic) (male or female)
• seeing things that actually make me nauseous

TBH, the faps one is more things that stop me from reading a doujinshi or hentai manga; I haven't experienced any NSFW novels on NU that have turned me away for those reasons.

 

1) NTR of course.
2) Amnesia from a female lead is annoying too.
3) Bad translations (or weaboo translations for JP novels (keeping words like neko, urusai, baka, etc.)).
4) Too much "translator notes", I don't usually mind them, but sometimes there's just so much of those and I'm like "come on, let me read in peace, please".
5) Dropped in COO or inconsistent releases.

2. Dropped by the author info
3. Qidian
4. Really slow chapter release vs how many chapter left
5. A really hypocritical MC
6. A boring and predictable novel with subpar writing skills
7. Repetition word stalling writing style
8. Too much info dump

4. Idiot behavior from the supposedly reincarnated MC
5. Indecisive MC or if MC often do Idiotic behavior (e.g. sparing the enemy that are fucking trying to kill you more than once without other reason than the MC is a "good person".)

7. Info dump

 

A great story with awful translation, it hurts my soul. I'd rather wait for a better translation.

Super long and often reused descriptions

 

Way too many things to list and it depends on the context, but generally if the plot ever feels stupid it is usually a good time to stop reading, for example if it spends half of the time on silly side-plots that goes nowhere or treats an obviously idiotic mc as a genius.
Overused/forced drama or tragedy as well.

 

• goodie two shoes main characters. I believe humans are complex begins that do both good and evil. Mcs should reflect that more.
• 1st person mode writing. I never put myself in the MCs shoes and I prefer a disconnect between me and the mc.
• Fucking don't blame for being ruthless.
• Something I call "closed door character development" mainly in Chinese novels where the mc hides to increase their strength. It's bs. I don't want to read about how the never OD on pills . Can I has character interaction plz.
• Easy to hate "bad guys" ... Looks at status screen sees robber, rapist k the are bad guys let's kill them.
• "Poor man's novels" when a normnorm free novel "borrows" premises of another novel normally a paid for light novel but fails to keep the charm or just goes to the butcher with it
• 0 impact arcs. Story arcs that see the mc having no change and NO! gaining levels or a new skill isn't character development.
• Preaching about the a subject matter. Can't remember the name of the book but this author was on and on about how white people are racist to "yellow people" and blamed everything bad on racism and they went and made all the bad guys white .
• Pussy stories. Basically when an autour write themselves into a difficul subject matter but then deus ex machina out it of instead of dealing with it properly. Sure people find rapes, ntr, loli, incest off putting but if handled carefully the can add extra dynamic to the story.. [ don't SAO it]
• Inconsistencies. Plz don't change a character gender just to add them to your harem.
• Lesbian gender bender [9/10 ] it's a cope out so that the don't have to deal with a body and mental imbalanced character where physical urgers contradict , mental upbringing and past social norms .

When i forgot what the hell the mc is supposed to be doing for his main plot because of 1000+ chapterz....

 

Like the current Shokugeki no Souma manga, MC became the first seat yet come another rival and lose to him, that rival love the heroine too, I don't know why but that make me pissed off and dropped it.

NTR, Dick-Brain MC, arrogant MC that underestimate others and being cocky, being pushover, and making stupid decisions over stupid reasons, and some minor reasons like Shokugeki no Souma on above

 

Authors who get sexually aroused when the female mc is abused all the time, so shes facing tragedies or just doesn't have stuff go her way.

Disloyal protagonists who say they only love one girl but their d*ck is obviously the only thing on their mind, so pretty much all harems in general.

Cliches that extend the period of time it would normally take for something to do, such as the typical idiot that ruins everything or just the plain doesnt get what they need and has to get it another time

There are more I could think of but I'm normally patient with my novels and don't get bored of them, however ever since being disappointed with harem after harem and then female mc's that would just have tragedy after tragedy, I've lost my patience and its almost to the point where I've lost interest in reading. Well I'm actually really close to that point now, only read the new chapters of stiff I currently have and even that's getting dull

Stupidity long filler arc filled with stupid drama exaggerations.

But what absolutely turn me off is when.I find this. "your" instead of "you're"

 

For me there's things that make me never start reading and then there's things that make me instantly stop reading. Sometimes they're the same, sometimes not.
