    1. What makes an ero story good?
Good use of imagery and something passionate might be nice. You're not selling a porno, you're selling a dream.
Idk if males can enjoy content directed at females since they're pretty much on the different ends of the same pole. I mean, while female stuff can basically be as rapey as male content (the fmc going "no, no" but the hot male lead going anyways), unless it's a pure ero story, there is a TON of buffer in between nights. A lot of which is romance and drama, lots of melodrama... I'm over-generalizing, but you get the idea.

    2. What makes it a horrible read for both female and male readers?
Scum bag MC... Mutual respect of both participating parties is always the best in my opinion. Unless they're both scumbags, then they can make like rabbits, idc.

But more in general, too much self-insert fantasy. I've seen a couple "guy gets a super power so he abuses it to get lucky with beauties" stories floating around. I get some people dig that, but I don't really get the appeal.

Dialogue during sex scenes can also get really corny. Makes me laugh sometimes at how cliche they are hahahaha. Anyways, something you should be careful about. Sex with no dialogue is kinda boring though, so try to find a good balance.

Lastly, it's the great sex=> fall in love, or the great sex=> I can't live without your body anymore trope.

    3. When you read this type of novel, do you prefer the entirety of it to be in the 1st person point of view?
1st person POV is easier, multi-POV seems interesting though. Why not just go 3rd person view then if you can't decide?

    4. Do you enjoy purely ero action?
Plot is always better. Doesn't have to be a good plot, but some semblance of plot should at least be there, even if you're trying to make an ero ero story. Or even in a oneshot, or reader insert.

    5. Do you like it when there's real romance in an ero story? How deep is too deep?
I like romance. It's logical to group sex with romance. Ofc you don't need romance for one night stands. But if the partners are gonna go at it repeatedly in the story, then they might as well upgrade from a sex friend into a lover (or harem mate or even good friend) at least.

    6. Do you read ero stories during a meal/in the day/on the train...this is a troll question but why not?
Tend not to, but if there's an ero part in the story I'm currently reading, then it's better to get through it quick and get to the non ero parts so I can keep binge reading.

To note the perspective from which this response is coming, I'm a female with fetishes that are generally considered darker, and when reading ero, I generally do not read vanilla.

    1. I think what makes an ero story good is a focus on a theme - either, storywise or fetish-wise. And of course, good writing (proper grammar, sensory descriptions, etc). After that, good becomes subjective. An ero story someone enjoys could be one that another person thinks is trash. It depends on the reader and the reader's fetishes at that point I think.
I think female readers generally go for ero stories with a more romantic plotline, so the focus is on the romantic relationship, and the sex is more secondary (but doesn't necessarily have to be less prominent).
Whether or not a male reader can enjoy an ero story meant for women is questionable. I would think this is possible, but not probable. While there are hentai manga with a romantic plotline, generally, it's from the male perspective whereas a novel targeted at females are from the female perspective. I think it would really depend on the story, which could greatly change the likelihood of male readers enjoying it. A story with a female MC could be attractive to male readers if it can be related to from either a male or female perspective. That's just my opinion though.

    2. As I started the answer to 1, basically the opposite. No focus and bad writing.

    3. I think I prefer the third person POV with a focus on a particularly character as in the entire story is told in third person, but from the perspective of a particular character. Multiple POV stories are okay as well and could allow a writer to elaborate on the overall picture of the story and to show the reader the perspective and feelings of multiple characters.

    4. I prefer purely ero action. I do not like when it's just something of a sideline to the story though. If anything, I would want the ero parts to be important parts of the story. If none of the sex has any implications or effects on the plot, then there was really no point of having the sex in the story in the first place IMO.

    5. No. In fact, I get uncomfortable when there's sex in a romance novel. I'm fine with there existing a romantic relationship between characters, but I generally do not have a focus on that, especially during sex scenes.

    6. No, I read ero novels when I wanna fap TBH.

    1. What makes an ero story good?
    Especially for female readers?
Can a male reader enjoy an ero story meant for women?

NTR story, women can enjoy a good handling from the netori guy while MC can enjoy netorase

    2. What makes it a horrible read for both female and male readers?

NTR story, the plot are just horrible and depressing

    3. When you read this type of novel, do you prefer the entirety of it to be in the 1st person point of view?
    Or are multiple POVs better?
(With a focus on the main character, but throws in the thoughts of other characters as well)

NTR story usually span to multiple POV of the same story. For the wholesome experience

    4. Do you enjoy purely ero action?
Or do you like it mixed up with adventure/action (a real plot)?

NTR story have the best plot because without plot it just not NTR

    5. Do you like it when there's real romance in an ero story? How deep is too deep?

Yes, the heroine usually fell in love with the giant cock(non-MC), and it's usually goes very deep to reach her womb

    6. Do you read ero stories during a meal/in the day/on the train...this is a troll question but why not?

Yes, i usually read newspaper during meal, train etc. Plenty of cheating spouse(real life) story there.

I wasn't into smut until i met with this English novel called " Up in the Air ".

It's got all the deep story, the tragic past, the deep love, One True Pairing, angst, love at first sight, and HOT smut!

Best part is: there's dual POV, and a total of 3 series!!

Opss, the main supporting character is gay btw. I'm not into gay and yaoi, but nevertheless it doesn't lessen the story's charm

Generally the best solution is to not go straight into fucking in no time flat unless you have a situation like pure love insult complex where it is not emotions but pure lust. What i find enjoyable is how they all ended up there fucking under a tree and ero just makes the tree scene all the more enjoyable. Lastly the most annoying types of ero is typically the mind control ones since whiles it is good in doujins and hentai it typically ends up with imagery of a guy fucking a doll which is generally a turn off invoking their inner lust is different though.

    @chillo thanks for your response~
I will pay attention to logical romance. :D

@Delusion thank you for your suggestions! I will pay attention to unusual fetishes and SFX XD.
But how is a man's point of view in this sense derogatory to a woman? :blobdizzy:
Do you have any (vanilla) example/novel that shows this?

@Scholar Occult Cauldron Thanks for recommending 'Pure Love Insult Complex'! :) I will give it a try even though @mmsupreme said its "not emotions but pure lust." It seems the (tree scene) has appealed to him/her. It appears that a 'signature' scene is important. This is a great finding.

@replay Thank you for mentioning this!!
I will learn to master the art of withholding details and building tension. Great advice!
Then again, I have no people in my non-cyber life to ask. T-T No exp from real women...exp: 0

Oohh! @Cupcake Ninja You're mentioning the writing technique 'Chekhov's Gun' when you say
This is really a hard skill to manage. I haven't been able to drag out tension very well so far. It happens and ends too quickly in my writing. I also understand how you prefer 1st person POV because it "increases the immersion factor." I will see how I can blend 1st and 3rd povs together. :blobwoah: Btw, your dp is very scary.

@Arcadia Blade Thanks for your insight! That sounds challenging to do, but I'd take it up!

@Jarrow thank you for reminding me! I almost forgot about senses :blobsweat_2: high school writing, back then, made me abuse descriptions. And I abused it to oblivion until I forsook it. And you are sure dedicated ($70/m vpn), but I'm in the design field...it's a bit more relaxed? And If I was using company property I would use it strictly for the company.

@R0 Sorry about that. Everyone is real, aright. I was referring to people in my 3D life :blobcry:

    @kelkel1133 LOL XDDDD

@congvthc we need to tag a nuf writer to make this happen! :blobpopcorn_cool:

@DarkSanity Beautifully said, thank you. :)

    @elengee @Eruxol @Rivenn @lkaze
thank you :blobjoy: I will never understand those sub-genres...

@Goblin Sleuth I hope to be an author that good someday...thank you!

@xluferx That is so reassuring to see another writer prefer it this way! Thank you~ Your reply was so funny I laughed when I got off the bus.

:blobpats:Interesting! @arashi-chan12 I will pay attention to that!

:O I think so too!! But since you are a niche-genre reader I can see how this is even more important for you.
    Thank you @King0Mik

What makes an ero story good? Cunnilingus. If there's a vagina involved and the novel includes cunnilingus, its rating automatically goes up in my eyes.

    More seriously, though...
I read a lot of both English published, English amateur, and NU ero, and I've written a few scenes myself. I avoid most of the male-aimed ero here on NU because even the synopsis are degrading and kill brain cells reading them, but as for the one or two I've read... They were disappointing.
I straight up disagree that women's erotica should have little sexual description. Romance novels with sex scenes can, will and should gloss over the details because they're selling romance with good sex as part of the package; if it's too erotic, it will leave the zone of romance and create mood whiplash. If I picked up an erotica and it only gave me romance novel levels of description, I'd damn well demand my money back. (Not that there aren't novels that straddle the divide. For the sake of discussion, I'm going to use Mills & Boons for certain examples, because those "romances" are basically just softcore erotica.)

Personally, I prefer third person POV, usually following one character or perhaps switching just between the two main leads. First person is too invasive for me.
Plot is needed to give context and buildup to your erotic scenes. How much you need depends on how long your story is. Short stories really just need a basic premise - "kidnapped and chained up, now here we are", "summoned an incubus by accident, whoops", and so on and so forth... When you're writing a multi-chapter story, you need a plot strong enough to justify the characters being kept together and having continued relations, and you're going to want character development and possibly some drama to keep things interesting, otherwise your reader will get bored and wander away. Sex is surprisingly not that intriguing.
Romance is optional. I personally prefer the characters to be in love by the end of an erotic novel, and to have at least a small amount of tenderness at the end of a short story, but that's just preference. What isn't optional for me is for them to have a connection, because...

Erotica is about high emotion! Just like porn exaggerates the visuals of sex acts, erotica exaggerates the emotions experienced during sex, and that's what's the most erotic to read. It's not mushy-mushy feeling, but the characters being overwhelmed by passion and lust (usually), and the readers getting to share in that experience.
That's why detail is indispensable: not just the visuals of it but, as people have said, the smells, the tastes, the sounds, the tactile sensations... You need these to build and support that emotion, and for characters' emotions to be obviously affected by these things.
That emotion is dependent on the connection experienced by the people involved, because its their feelings that mesh together to create that high emotion. As I said, that's usually lust and passion but, depending on the context you used to set it up or even the kink you're selling, there can also be hints of or absolute embarrassment, reluctance, shame, hatred, guilt, etc., which really spices things up.
Lust and passion can also be modified by excitement created by the particularly fantasy being set up...

Which brings me straight back to POV and plot. That fantasy really needs to be built well. Sexual tension and foreplay are erotic in themselves (possibly more erotic than the act, to be honest), and without them, your ero scene will fail.
For example, I once read what was arguably going to be a great Mills & Boons book. It claimed to sell a very simple, very effective fantasy: a woman has ongoing sex with a mysterious, handsome, charming thief who steals in during the night and picks her over her jewels. Unfortunately most of the story was told from his perspective, so we already knew why he was really there, what sort of person he was out on the streets, that he was madly in love with her, and at the very end it was revealed that he was her nerdy neighbour from childhood all grown up. It was not sexy. He was too mundane and ordinary for the reader, and we didn't get to experience him as the charming and sexily mysterious visitor that he was in her eyes.

Character connection can be all sorts of dynamics - they're enemies, one is dominating the other, or otherwise... But it needs to be there and it needs to be acknowledged. Even if you stick to just one person's POV, the other person is going to be giving out reactions, facial expressions and body language, so they shouldn't be ignored. One character's emotions will act on the other's and fuel that fire. If one is obviously experiencing pleasure because of something, the other will get more aroused... Or more afraid. All dependent on the product you're selling.
But take one half out and the emotion you're brewing will likely flop.

And personally, I hate any and all erotica where the woman is shown to not be experiencing all that much pleasure, or even tolerating pain, when that's not a kink the story is supposed to be selling. There's nothing sexy about men who are crap in bed.

TL;DR: Exaggerated emotion created by character dynamics, plot, and probably POV, are what makes erotica erotic. Without it, it's going to be meh at best. Also don't stick my dweeby neighbour in leather and call it a day, and don't come to the bedroom if you haven't even taken sex ed.

(This took so long to type up, I probably forgot a whole bunch of stuff...)

why not practice writing here at the forums,

Not male's perspective, but smut targeted mostly for males audience. Among CN in novelupdates, you can see this in 'slutty chivalrous woman'. It is written from female perspective, but targeted for male audience.

Smut are mostly targeted at female readers or have female lead. If it is written from male perspective, it will simply be ero. Ero written for male audience will mostly depict females as per their desires (like slave to desires, or plaything)

    DP? Whats that fam?
Also Its hard to mix the two but if you want my advice try to start a scene with third person just for the setting and character description, then lead into first person with some kind of thought from the character its being viewed from. This offers a smooth transition.

As for tension there are a lot of ways to pull that off. Basically its having two people's reactions to each other so just decribe their awareness of the other person. Maybe a fleeting glance or two, just to start off, to let readers know they're interested in the other. I guess it depends on what kinda novel you're going for tho.

Western novels for example depend heavily on the attraction factor and they go into detail in decribing the good looking male or female. How they get hard over just the female lead bending over with their heart shaped rear. Or the way the male lead's muscles wax and wane deliciously with each delicate motion.

Japanese take a more light approach. They sorta dont make the characters ultra attracted to each other and undressing one another in their minds, nor do they usually describe seemingly innocent actions as erotic. But they do tend to give us decriptions like how the person might smell or how their skin feels against each others and its not in a situation that is itself risque. The leads dont immediately wanna fuck each other and they just tell us how the attraction to that person effects the characters. They let us kinda experience it through out imaginations. Fantasize. Similar to western novels if done right but slightly different in how they present it. At least thats my experience with them so far, wont be true for all of them but the ones that are good and that make me remember them? That's how they've been.

Haven't read enough korean novels to tell how they depict erotic novels tho.

Write for someone specific. Write what you know, what you're passionate about. Don't feel a need to add too much into a single story - you can always save the parts that don't fit in for a later story. These are all bits of advice I would give anyone, but they're even more important for erotic stories. Start with the fetish/target audience and build your world around that. Inside the Cave of Obscenity and Road to Kingdom are good examples.

Sorry for my late reply! >.<

I didn't understand this until I read your comment, thank you @Moonpearl :blobsmilehappyeyes:
And this is hella funny, it's so true!!!
The way the author depicts ero, and the plot attached to it is what makes it fresh and interesting~
And this line is gold. You are an expert!! :aww: This comment provided so much insight into the dynamics of erotica!!!!
    Thank you so much :blobmelt:

@replay Thank you for the suggestion! >.<
I will tag you if I do so in the near future :blobpats:....:blobcheeky:ahahaha!
    But you might be disappointed.....

@Delusion It's interesting to know that the fantasy male-directed erotica does not reflect a man's real perspective.
I hope that is really true. I checked out 'Pure Love insult Complex' and I can't even click into the 1st chapter.
The tags 'rape' 'lolicon' 'ntr'...I can't take it if this is considered vanilla in normal male-directed erotica.
That's just too sad :sweating_profusely: I got even more scared when I read the reviews,
They say the male lead, although rapes his harem members, is a gentle-man.
:blobdizzy::blobdizzy::blobdizzy: My heart is too delicate for that :blob_coughblood:....ko
But I have to check out 'slutty chivalrous woman' next :blobcheeky:

@Cupcake Ninja Thank you for this advice, I was struggling with how to build tension!
And maybe you already know by now, Dp= Display picture ~~
Also, thank you for providing your comparison b/w Western and Japanese erotica.
It seems to tap into different cultural ideas on romance.
Western view= attraction at first sight. (you can spot your love interest a mile away, from the get go)
    Japanese view= a serendipitous meeting.
(although not obvious at first sight, the discovery of the love interest's charm is like stumbling upon an unexpected treasure)
    This is great inspiration :blobmelt:

That was the most encouraging comment ever :blobsob::blobsob::blobsob:
I can't please everyone after all.
:blobxd:btw, I've read the Cave of Obscenity when it first came out on the update list.
I think that was what inspired me to write my current non-erotic pg13 story with slime in it....:blobpats:ahahaha

I can't say enough thank yous. NUF is by far the most welcoming and helpful forum I've ever been to.

    1. I like ero stories where the characters feel real and the settings feel real but the situation, character or setting is abnormal enough to make it interesting. For example in terms of erotic stories I quite liked The Sensual M on spottoon. Basically where the characters discover new things about themselves and perhaps have insecurities that they might not be consciously aware of.

Also people don't always notice everything around them, especially when they're entranced or aroused, so don't try to describe too many sensations at once. Like think about where the characters focus is on and follow that focus.

Also things might not be always sunshine and rainbows, they're not going to know what each other want, they might not even understand what they want. Figuring out what each character wants is more like piecing together clues to a mystery murder, and can get confusing and not simple. Also there might be external factors which create pressure or excite concern or curiosity towards themselves, or their partner.

People don't fall in love with people, they fall in love with an idea then they learn to love the person after they learn more about each other through chasing after that idea. You can't love someone you don't understand, you can only admire them and admiration is fickle.

Well Rant over I don't even remember what my point was if there was one.
I guess the point was character development is most important followed by plot or something like that probably.
I'm male though so idk what females like, maybe dicks?

Also Vanilla is resident sleeper for me, but hey I'm probably too kinky for my own good.

    2. People that are unrelatable and do things which are nonsensical, unrealistic and do injustice without considering it unjust. Like if they do something bad on purpose they should at least know that what they did was bad.

    3. I prefer mc 1st pov and all other characters 3rd pov. But I don't mind for certain other characters to occasionally have 1st pov at key moments to enlighten the reader to things they're not aware of, to prepare them for what's to come or to shine light on something unexpected or abnormal that has recently happened.

    4. unless it's a one shot or a series of short erotic scenes catering to specific fetishes, I'd say a solid plot and story really is needed.

    5. I wouldn't say romance is required, I probably prefer if it doesn't start off as romance doesn't have to develop into one either, but can develop into one, depends on what makes most sense to happen given each of the characters, No such thing as too deep, only things that are too unbelievable inside the setting.

    6. at home up to computer with doors and curtains closed and tissues to hand.

    1. What makes an ero story good?
Plot, a reason behind the act is what makes the actual action more relatable.

    Especially for female readers?
Fetishes are a thing, maybe cater to a specific fetish. If it doesn't work, try writing out a different one. What surprises me the most is the amount of females that write NTR hentai. And some of their works, make me wonder if they took part in those kind of things. BDSM is also another fetish I came upon reading from female writers.

My assumption that men usually come up with these kind of things was false.

Can a male reader enjoy an ero story meant for women?
Well it depends on what direction your story is taking. Men usually like descriptions of the actual ero, while I think female readers want setting and feeling of the characters in those moments.

    2. What makes it a horrible read for both female and male readers?
When the plot just leads to pointless abandon. Most bad reviews, I've seen, people complain about weak-willed characters and the situation doesn't make sense. Straight up tragedy and abuse also is a turn off. Bad dialogue and strange events that don't apply to the situation.

    3. When you read this type of novel, do you prefer the entirety of it to be in the 1st person point of view?
Or are multiple POVs better? (With a focus on the main character, but throws in the thoughts of other characters as well)
Yup focusing on the main character in third person and jumping to another character momentarily is good.

    4. Do you enjoy purely ero action?
Or do you like it mixed up with adventure/action (a real plot)?
A little of both, depends on my mood.

    5. Do you like it when there's real romance in an ero story? How deep is too deep?
Yes real romance is good too. the only way its too deep is if their is mind-break in their. then we've gone too far.

    6. Do you read ero stories during a meal/in the day/on the train...this is a troll question but why not?
Maybe while I'm waiting for food at a drive thru.

@malvazar Wow, those answers...there were too many parts of your comment I wanted to quote :blobsob: really, beautifully said!
Yeah!! That exactly what contemporary fantasy is about. Real people in abnormal settings.

I would also rather read about a focused mc than an indecisive one.

Can another love quote get better better than this? I have to archive your answer :blobjoy: love is a journey, not a destination...

    yeah!! Just like passion!!

TBH, I think most female readers read erotica for the sub genre it's in...reverse harem/yandere/beastmen..
I think they like the idea of being loved by a fantasy character.
But I feel like a voyeur when I read erotica :blobsweat_2:

No, it makes sense. People don't want to read about soemthting they already know. Novelty is interesting.

:aww: exactly, that was the word for it!!

I thought it would be a smart phone :blobrofl:

    Thank you!!

I guess it's more believable when a female author imagines it? But it wouldn't be surprising if they actually participated. Ever since I e started writing seriously, material from real life is indispensable. It makes me feel a little rude that I'm using other people's experiences without asking them. But where's the line to draw? (.__.)

Male readers would find pure action enjoyable?
Does that include how each described action reveals the psychological state or personality of the characters?

These two are too hard to read :blobdead:

    :blobxd: lol!!

    Thank you for your comments!
I've learnt a lot again XD

    Harem
Multiple hair colors to keep track of characters.
Keep fetish to the minimum so as not to annoy readers.
I read a Lezhin comic story with where both parties actually had a good time... It's about a guy who got a super power after being electrocuted. A far cry from all the rape fantasy shit that permeates most media. It's superpower was sex satisfaction or rather giving orgasms. Now that's a good premise lol

    1. For me romance is tragic. A summer love that has to return home never to be seen again etc. Maybe separated by death, just separated by an event. The separation part makes the love reach its peak and create strong sense of longing... true love is painful.

I hate Romance in cn novels so far it's just full of boorish idiots without tact and shred of common decency. It banks on the fact that viewer identifies with MC , well I cannot identify with a complete idiot. Hence to me most CN romance feels more like NTR than anything else.

    2. If the MC is a creepy pervert salivating all over himself every moment he/she is close to opposite sex.

    3. Multiple points , I like the characters toughs intertwined into the text.

    4. If I wanted pure ero action I would watch hentai or porn , there;s an old meme that says "came for boobs, stayed for the story" <- that should be true for every good novel.
Personally I enjoy monster-girl stories , especially with really really creepy ones. Where most people are scared and reject the monstergirl , but the MC has a strange attraction to her.
So she discovers a type of affection she never experienced before from anyone , she wraps him up in a cocoon only his chinchin poking out and uses him as a sex slave.... jk jk
That sort-of transcendent relationship tickles me the right way tho.

    It could be anything really.

    5. It's not matter how Deep, as long as it SENSIBLE.and makes logical sense its going to be good.

@ZeroBlink thank you so much for your views! :blobsmilehappyeyes:

That is an interesting view on romance. A strong sense of longing...a need that is created by the plot...this is actually pretty smart! I need to think more about this!

Yes! :blobokhand: If it's done well, I hope I can reach that level.

That's an interesting preference. Monster girl...kind of reminds me of beastmen or monsters female MCs meet for women's erotica. The obsessive love the monster has for the MC...
