Discussion What does ovepowered mean?

I feel like my interpretation must be flawed. when i first started reading i thought it meant one above all / strongest in the story. Form what i see it means balance breaking but it can be shared with multiple people at the same time due to the plot narratively has to be balance. So what's happening? Am i wrong or is their a word above overpowered?

 

I can explain it means the character has the biggest balls in the universe that no one can even do anything to him and he can fk all your bitches LOL

 

Someone who have more power than needed for certain task is considered overpowered for that task.

In stories MC tends to be overpowered. We say they are overpowered because in certain power level, they are much more powerfull than other people. Most of the time they are actually powerfull enough to fight with other people who are one or more rank above than them.

example: Rank 5 MC is much more powerfull than other rank 5 people. Also he can fight with rank 6 people and can win. So he is overpowered in his class.
ps: He still can be killed with one slap by rank 9 enemies, but this doesn't take his overpowered status away. He is still much more powerful than other people in his power level.

It just refers to characters that can ROFLstomp everyone 95% of the time. The other 5% refers to other characters who also can ROFLstomp everyone 95% of the time. Of course, depending on the story, this can go as high as 99%. In ID: Greatest Fusion Fantasy, Id is very overpowered Mary Sue but he can only ROFLstomp people like 92% of the time because there are also a lot of people who are also overpowered, such as the pieces of Chaos, who can ROFLstomp everyone 99% of the time because the only people who can defeat them one on one is Id, unless Id becomes The Goddess in which case he can ROFLstomp everyone 100% of the time.

 

It means plot armor so thick it's practically tangible. I'm mean your basically tripping over it left and right that's how much of it there is.

As exefour said, overpowered is simply when your strenght greatly exceeds what is needed to complete a task, e. g. using a nuke in a duel.

 

Normaly the novel has a power level and rules. So overpowered characters are these that are over this rules.
Ex: fight and win against people over his strength, have a technology or ability extremely superior to others.

 

Overpowered is like being a dragon amongst lizards. Doesnt make you the only dragon out there, though.
The main question is how big the scope is; if you are overpowered in your town, doesnt mean you are overpowered everywhere.
Like a rpg player that already played for a while going back to the newbie-zone?
In that newbiezone he certainly is overpowered, but outside not so much.

--of course, depending on author, the newbiezone in thaz example could just as well be the entire world

 

Overpowered can also mean when a MC was a Famous assasin/soldier/fighter then trains from early on so that pretty much no one in His Generation is worthy to be his enemy. So to say someone who Exceeds Common sense?

 

Think of video games, where the term comes from. Sometimes, a certain class, or ability, or character is just completely unbalanced and way too strong, to the point that using it is practically cheating. It doesn't mean that it's the best; there could be more than one unbalanced thing, or it might only be unbalanced in specific situations. Or you might be playing an unbalanced class, but you're still level 10 so a level 50 character can easily stomp you even if they're playing a weak class.

 

It probably means unreasonably strong just because the story says so.

 

OP or overpowered doesnt mean more explosives Than needed... It meens a character which is somehow Much stronger Than others as an example when beerus was first showed, he was so Much stronger Than the rest. Not anymore but some characters have Broken abilities like time stop... Which is so much more powerful Than time slow as an example so overpowered is more a term of a Broken char like One punch man or some ability which is Broken. So an ability like Ope Ope No mi is not THE strongest ability but its ability is really Good and is kind of Broken... So Ope Ope No mi is open so something thats a cheat, Broken or just really strong currently in THE series, like Beerus isnt op in current Dragonball but he was.

 

An Overpowered character is one who's story never produces cliffhangers because the challenges aren't credible threats, don't require clever solutions, or need no effort to overcome.

 

to be overwhelming in pure and raw strength not just physically but in every aspect even without the prerequisite of skill and technique with almost of the people

 

What you expect from those novels is how the mc is gonna deal with it and when is the enemy gonna get slapped because it is obvious that the mc can deal with it easily, They are generally about comedy or waiting for the mc to do something while the enemy torture you by creating more hate.
