Hi, due to the vast number of readers here I have no doubt that some of you have already read or have been reading this series. Quick question though, I bought The Elfstones of Shannara. It says on the cover that it is Book One of The Shannara Chronicles. Searched it online but It says there that it is already the second book. Do I need to read The Sword of Shannara or should I proceed with the Elfstones?

It's a trilogy so I would suggest reading The sword first. The MC of the 2nd bok, elfstones is the grandchild of the MC in the 1st book. You could probably not read the 1st one and still enjoy it, but I find that reading the 1st will almost always lead to greater enjoyment, as you notice certain things that would be impossible otherwise.

Don't really know, still wrapped in plastic. Should be good though.

Thank you. I'll hunt down the first book then. Or failing that, an epub.

The Shannara Chronicles are freakin' huge. Teh author tends to separate out a 'series' of three novels, all based in the world of Shannara. Most of them are in chronological order, but some of them are prequels-sequels in history as well.

you can read the elfstones first, but it would be like reading douluo dalu 2 if douluo dalu was already fully translated. You will get major spoilers for the first one. Also, there is a more recently written prequel to the sword of shannara, and is about the original forging and use of the sword. Also, there are like ten books that take place before hat prequel. If i had the chance, then I would read everything in the chronological order the first time I read it.
(the beginning ones chronologically take place on a modern earth, then ongoing apocalypse earth, then post-apocalypse earth, then shannara prequel, then sword of shannara, then elfstones of shannara. I recommend reading in that order if you have the oppurtunity).
If you are interested I can find the book names and put them in order for you.

Each book can be read by itself, as each takes place at least a generation after the last book. With that said, there are a lot of references and things that will make more sense if you have read the previous books.

I found the list since I can't look at my bookshelf.
    Chronological order is:
    1. The Word and Void series
    a. Running with the Demon
    b. A Knight of the Word
    c. Angel Fire East
    2. The Genesis of Shannara series
    a. Armageddon's Children
    b. The Elves of Cintra
    c. The Gypsy Morph
    3. Legends of Shannara series
    a. Bearers of the Black Staff
    b. The Measure of the Magic
    4. The First King of Shannara (this is the prequel I talked about).
    5. The Sword of Shannara (this is the name of the first book the author published, and of the trilogy of the first three books in the original series which are:)
    a. The Sword of Shannara
    b. The Elfstones of Shannara
    c. The Wishsong of Shannara
    6. The Heritage of Shannara series.
    a. The Scions of Shannara
    b. The Druid of Shannara
    c. The Elf Queen of Shannara
    d. The Talismans of Shannara.
If you are at this point, you will probably read the rest, so I will use my almighty powers to benovolently allow you to access knowledge known as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shannara#Novels (this sorts everything in order of in-universe events)

I have read everything up to the first book in The Defenders of Shannara series, which is the High Druid's Blade, but I haven't read anything after that yet (I don't have the books after that). Up to that point, I can recommend everything though.

I think I read Elfstones first for some reason and didn't have a problem with it, but that doesn't say much as I'm the kind of guy that can just start right in the middle of a book and just roll with it...
I lost interest after the second series(Heritage of Shannara) though, not counting Word and the Void since it hadn't been linked with the main series yet when I read it.
