You could check out Darksword by Weis & Hickman.
In the world settings, people are born with the power of using one of the eight elements, with the help of the catalysts. Every element is linked to a profession. Fire for warrior, earth for farmers, water for climate control etc.
And then, there are some who can't use any elements...
It's long, but well written. I could hardly put the books down.

Wow. you are going far back int he annals of time. wish dragon lance was still popular with good writers. the world they created was so epic in scale.

I never said it was a single person. a group could definitely do it. .

And didnt they send fireballs at each other all the times, granted they aren't giant fireballs, but think of a hundred of them launching into an army, then a few seconds later another hundred

also I did say building a castle would take a day ( if there were a bunch of them).

World of warcraft have a lot of novels, their magic system is based on all elements plus other magic types, not sure which to recommend though.

Fireballs, sure, but I guess they'll have the same role as archers' volley or depending on the firepower perhaps gunmen's, it doesn't really change the tactics used,
Not to mention how they can be blocked and countered in the exact same way with another element, not to mention for missile attack Earth element is vastly superior in destructive capabilities,

Creating a one night castle, now that's a game changer, though I doubt the feasibility of actual application,

doesnt have to be a conventional castle . maybe just a 2 meter high platform with a meter high barricade at the top and edges would be enough to create a siege like conditions. especially if the enemy doesn't have siege equipment.

Hmm, indeed, so I guess in the end,
Earth will be vastly superior in land battle with their instant fortifications,
Wind perhaps in using guerrilla tactics?
Fire in their steam engine, perhaps? So superior logistics and strategic mobility in both land and naval battle,
Water in naval mobility and elemental advantage, though perhaps Fire can match them in mobility?

My favorite writer is from the XVIIth century... it puts a lot in perspective ^^
The death gate cycle is what introduced me to W&H. I had a hard time doing anything else than reading for a time.
