Talking about saber, it got me thinking, why is saber named saber when they are using swords? (Fate series)
The hero: My sword is a super steel 10000 fold Nippon legendary katana! Minion A: Cool. I will very easily kill you using my stick with a pointy end here's why spear is king of battlefield Samurai? go to war wield only katana? other samurai will say "noobs"
Swords for one handed use weight 1-1.5 kg, long swords weight around 2-2.5 kg. 5 kg isn't much for short periods of time, but if you need to wield it for a long time, you won't last (though I don't really know how long an encounter between armies took and how much time the average soldier would fight. I always thought they fought for several hours, but no idea.)
martial art? you can use any weapon but if you want make story MC start as low soldier then spear as main and sword as secondary weapon~ practical use spear have more range on battlefield~ as chocobo said pole arm is evolution of spear shield used to protect user from arrow and enemy spear~ as for axe and mace dunno about that only viking and and those who have great strength pop up on my mind~
They probably fight (stab ppl) for couple of minutes rest is moving around. Nobody gonna fight to the end, couple of ppl gonna die (it depends how much but 10% is probably a big number) , the losing side gonna tell "oh shit we losing we must run" and they will run It don't take long for hundreds of ppl to stab hundreds of ppl
I want a classic MC who tries dual-wielding katanas or some other cliche loadout with historically accurate combat results. Otherwise -- yeah. Spear, halberd, other polearms, assorted villagers, and other uncommon weapons would be refreshing to read about. Since we're being historically accurate, I would expect the MC to resolve situations differently depending on their weapon, too. For example, a knife-wielding MC would favour close-combat in closed, narrow spaces. A villager-wielding MC would religiously avoid contact with cavalry troops. If we're not being historically accurate anymore, and we just want to see an MC that isn't cliche, then I want one that dual-wields longbows.
Armed melee combat still dominated by longer reaching thrust weapon like spears and it's derivatives for duel. Swords come in second due to it's wider range of utilities.
Lol, I guess the only case where it's different is when you are in Asia, well China, to be specific. IIRC they already had fights of 600k men against 600k men in 2nd-3rd century ac or bc (or was it in the war as a whole? can't remember). In battles on that scale only after losing a few tens of thousands would they say, "Well, fuck. We shoud run away while we still can." And seeing battles in that way, it's like football (soccer for the Americans) you run for a few minutes, walk for some time, run again and so on.
Poo. Have not seen anyone using poo as weapon since Donkey Kong (i think, it's one of those gorilla games). Oh wait, you can't use poo with martial art. How about a boomerang?
I'll pick Igorot Axe(you can search it on youtube), it's good in guerilla and jungle warfare, it's the weapon of my ancestors that was used against Spain for 333 years. Though I prefer ranged army over melee army, especially the English Longbowmen and the Mongolian Cavalry Archers
Chinese wars are weird You don't see often a war where they shoot at you with rocket powered arrows and other creations of Chinese
