When reading the novel, I had imagined what I thought WWX's face shrouded in black would look like and it wasn't like it was in the animation. So I am very grateful we get to see it. I never imagined all the swirling dark evil energy. Spooky af.
in the novel it was the latter, it was something said in general for the readers' knowledge and not something WWX "said". in the anime it wasn't addressed at all. i am pretty sure it says 3 months in the novel. but if you think about it logically, by the time he comes back, too much had happened in the sunshot campaign that it makes more sense for it to have been going for years rather than just a couple of months. besides, WWX truly looks different now from the time he was taken by Wen Chao. well i think this is how they counted it: WWX has been dead for 13 years, he lived as the Yiling Patriarch for 3 years before he died so that's 16 years, the remaining 4 years happened in between when he first went to Gusu until he came back during the sunshot campaign. his stay in the burial mound can't really amount to 3 years because JC stayed in Gusu for an entire year and then it took at leas several months until the fall of Lotus Pier (burning the cloud recesses down, the archery contest, the tortoise incident) so that's already more than just 1 year our of the total 4 besides, it's not accurate to say 16 years passed from when WWX became the Yiling Patriarch until he was reborn again. because after the sunshot ended, some time passed until Wen Ning's death and then JC and WWX turned on each other and WWX lived with the Wen survivors and angered many people until they decided to kill him. the 3 years i mentioned above refer to the time period between when LWJ saved him until he died (the time LWJ spent in confinement) so the whole thing either took more than 20 years or WWX stayed less than 3 years in the burial mound. so i guess the years count mentioned in the anime was done approximately. either way this means LWJ is truly around 36 years old in the present time, a whole daddy and the anime got that detail right in the first 2 episodes but now they made him look younger :/ i am kind of disappointed. he definitely doesn't look a day over 20 at most in episode 15. i hope they'll fix that up in the 2nd season.
he looks about the same age in ep 2 and ep 15 to me! the lighting is just a little different so his eyes are less glinty in ep 15
I didn't think he looked like his teenage self? I think the angle when he turns to look at Wei Ying after Apple was chasing the bunny is a bit odd, but he still looks old to me. Awww, I like emotional Lan Zhan . I would be on the verge of tears too if my loved one rejected me after almost confessing my love by wanting him to come back to my home... You can tell he's changed so much from his younger self to adult self in this. I understand he is supposed to be stone faced since his younger days but this really give Lan Zhan some character!!
it is just for the sake of staying true to the novel. we all know he must have been heartbroken at the time but LWJ's whole shtick is that he doesn't show emotions on his face at all no matter how much on a turmoil he might be inside. that was the main reason WWX never suspected his feelings. as for the age thing, you guys might be right but do you remember when he first showed up in Episode 1? in Mo village playing the guqin? he definitely looked older then than he did in episode 15 and, imo, he looked his best then this is what i am talking about https://twitter.com/mdzs_bot/status/1047725754459611136 we can't see all of his face but even the bits we see look...older lol

They showed us lan zhan's left side of the face when introducing him the first time in the donghua and Wei ying's right side or more like just the right eye when showing him after he came out of the burial mound...... Lol

I might end up memorizing the episodes of season 1 as well as the novel chapters that release till then to keep my morale up for wangxian lol
