Resolved what "err" mean at QI Novel?

I just keep meet this one word and I just don't know what it mean. Can somebody help explain it to me? What the hell is "err"?
example :
"You…" Those words seemed to have triggered an explosion in Song Zhen's face. With a face scarlet with agitation, he exclaimed, "But you were the one who imparted my cultivation technique to me! You even offered me many pointers so as to ensure that I wouldn't err… How can you possibly be unaware of it!"

Shorter word, grammatically correct, and both looks and Sounds a lot Better if you’re very used to/fluent in english.

Because err does not only mean that when used a certain way.

For example "to err on the side of caution" means being careful in order not to make a mistake.

While it means "to make a mistake", the phrase "made a mistake" might not entirely fit the sentence structure and also does not fit the gravity of the situation. (in reference to your example)

Essentially, it cannot be substituted with "a mistake" without subtly changing the meaning of the sentence or having to get the translator to have to change thw sentence due to structure problems.

60% of English comes from Greek or Latin. Just because “mistake” comes from Old Norse and Old French instead, has no validity when it comes to which is the shorter word. They’re both English words.
