Bring it on! Since my character is the champion of Makai according to the Google Sheets, I get to attack first!
BATTLE REPORT: Character: Sample Villain (@villain) Opponent: Mary Sue (@yuzuki) Location: Makai Level: 1 (Exp: 2) HP: 10/10 Turn: 1 (Attacker) Spellcard: Tiny Flame (F) Report: What is this puny human doing in my lair?! Here goes my attack! I summon my ultimate spell, Tiny Flame!!!! -snip- (additional writing truncated)
BATTLE REPORT: Character: Mary Sue (@yuzuki) Opponent: Sample Villain (@villain) Location: Makai Level: 1 (Exp: 2) HP: 10/10 Turn: 1 (Defender) Spellcard: Graceful Puddle (WW) Report: Hahaha! This villain sucks! His basic attack (1) was so weak and I blocked it super easily (3)! I also spotted this villain person summoning a spell card, and it seems like it's a fire spell? Hmph, so cliche! Of course a villain from Makai would be fire-type! I came especially prepared for this, so I brought lots of water-type spellcards on me! Take this! Graceful Puddle!!!! It's a little bit overkill, but this should nullify that spellcard like a piece of cake!
Oh, it looks like we switch roles now? This time, I get to be the Attacker and @villain is the Defender!
BATTLE REPORT: Character: Mary Sue (@yuzuki) Opponent: Sample Villain (@villain) Location: Makai Level: 1 (Exp: 3) HP: 10/10 Turn: 2 (Attacker) Spellcard: Rainbow Kaleidoscope (FEMWT) Report: Alright, here goes my trump card! This is my 5-core ultimate Spellcard, Rainbow Kaleidoscope!!!! I bet this villain doesn't have anything that can block this, right???
Ahhh!!!! Mercy!! Okay, I'm getting out of here. Sample Villain can't take a spell that high level! Sample Villain is going to retreat! You may have won Makai for today, but I'll be back with vengeance!! ((Oh, I guess since I've retreated, the penalty is to discard 1 Spellcard... I guess I'll have pick a Spellcard to discard from my inventory. Too bad!))
Yay, I won! I guess now I can edit the spreadsheet and put Mary Sue as the champion for Makai now! /tutorial end *bows*
BATTLE REPORT: Character: Rose Coriette Opponent: n/a Location: Scarlet Devil Mansion Level: Level 1 (Total EXP: 3) HP: n/a Turn: n/a Spellcard: n/a Report: Rose hesitantly pushed open then shutters that guarded the windows to the second floor, wincing as the dust scattered into the air as the aged wood creaked. Abandoned. The Scarlet Devil Mansion had been abandoned, a shadow of the brilliant glory it had once been. Over the hundreds of years, it had become overgrown with ivy and fallen slightly to disrepair. The rusted main gates were still bolted shut, but Rose slipped in through the windows. She straightened her back after she jumped down to the floor of the main atrium, sending clouds of particulate matter into the air. For now, Rose intended to make her residence here. Dozens of youkai had made this ancient mansion their home over the decades, but once again it was empty. Rose had a purpose for coming here. The Scarlet Devil Mansion was famous among vampires -- and even Rose, who was a youngling, was familiar with the names of the legendary vampires who once called this glorious estate their home. Perhaps, Rose thought, she would be able to uncover some secrets about her species in this ancient lair if she snooped around. Perhaps, those secrets would help her find some answers and deeper meaning towards the purpose of her existence. Perhaps, Rose could discover what it means to be a True Vampire, by walking among the shadows and the ruined hallways graced by those who were greatest in the faraway past. However, the Scarlet Devil Mansion was vast, perhaps too vast. Rose was only one person, and she had no maids or skills suited for cleaning. Rose Coriette walked slowly across the broken glass and ashes that scattered the floor, her impenetrable feet crunching as it stepped on brittle debris and jagged rocks. The Scarlet Devil Mansion had fallen long ago, the signs of destruction scattered throughout. Now, this abandoned mansion would be her new home. A vampire has returned to claim it as her own. In ashes.
BATTLE REPORT: Character: Rayleigh Opponent: I'm not sure if yuzunyan thought this through Location: Kourindou Level: 1 (3) HP: 10 Turn: 1 Spellcard: Gourds of Babylon Report: A man walked out of a forest, discovering a run-down building at the edge. It's overgrown with vines and moss on the outside, while the inside was a territory of mold and rotten furnitures. Still, the man seems to find it satisfactory for his purposes. He cleared the center of the room, shoving aside what might have been tables at some point. Then he left the abode, gathering a random assortment of stones and bringing them into the ancient structure, going back and forth until he had a decent pile inside. He sat next to it and start stacking the stones, meticulously choosing each one. Every stone he add formed the edifice, a cylindrical pillar half as tall as he was and wide enough for a dinner plate. He tapped the top several times once he's done and satisfied that the whole thing doesn't crumble to touch, he reverently took out the skull and placed it on the center. "For a start, this will do just fine." Then it's half an hour of trying to start fire in the damp environment. "...for a start! This will do just fine!" He lit the candles, one by one, and sat down cross legged facing the skull. Seconds turned into minutes, and hours, with no sign of movement save for the flickering shadows. The gourd and the skull stared at each other, a moment that last for an instant of eternity. Then, abruptly breaking the deadlock, a pulse of energy was expunged from the skull. The wall rapidly darken, as does the floor. Any debris, from mold until rat bones and broken furnitures sank into the all encompassing darkness, leaving only the man partially illuminated by crimson candlelight. Time lost its meaning, momentarily consumed by the pitch black. Then, as rapidly as it expand, it recedes back into the skull. There's obvious difference though. The wall seems to tranform into black bricks, seemingly absorbing light just by existing. It's easier to see when approached but that only sink the other side of the room into an illusion of boundless darkness. The furnitures were gone, but empty weapon and armor racks and an alchemical table sat in differing side of the room. And finally, the stone pillar where the skull sat seems to have morphed into bones. Most of them looked human. "And now, the darkness hold dominion. Black as death. I claim this Sanctuary for the Order."
Maybe one day there'll be a record board. And technically the objective of the game is to cover the board with your color! Apart from that, you can claim that your character lives there and other characters can find your character easily to challenge you for PvP (that you can't turn down without forfeiting). It also helps for canon IC roleplaying purposes because if, for example, an evil character "took over" the human village, there would definitely be a lot of rumors flying about and maybe a lot of characters would think about how they would react to this incident. It's basically a way for large plot events that effect all characters to happen without requiring a GM to advance "plot".
Yup! I think it's hard to make people interested. For the time being, I'm personally more-or-less approaching this as a mostly writing RPG rather than a battle RPG. I was hoping the player-made quest system would make it a little more interesting.
