Is our Emress Jiao Jiao going to find the Superior ONe in time?

In some of the spoilers here, XJX was also sick and our Empress went to find the cure,

someone found the cure before her (the previous Mei Furen?) and there was a cold war between XJX and her

is this this the current "arc"? If yes, I would love to stop reading until it caught up (after everything is resolved). Can anyone tell me when I can start binge reading it?

I think it was because Consort Jing's family had too much power. It's all about balancing the powers of the court, so he could stabilize it before passing the throne to Xie Jing Xing

It's all written in the thread. But I wil try to answer your questions.
Xie Jing Xi takes over the empire after the death of the brother and the suicide of the empress. The brother didn't leave any heir because the empress had became sterile.
MC become the empress and a war against Ming Qi starts.
Mei furen was part of the Mei family, a corrupted noble family of the Xie empire. To avoid her death along her siblings she stole secret information to give to Ming Qi. But the documents had been switched by the MC.
So Fu Xiu Yi gets the wrong informations about Xie Jing Xi's battle strategy and recompense Mei with a high concubine position. Xie Jing Xi let them believe that they can win but instead destroy them.
Mei Furen is tortured as a punishment by Fu Xiu Yi that later gets killed by his own men.

The beauty Lady Mei who was a noble in the courts, now became an ornament in a corner of a house. If the owner wants to spit or throw the discarded tea, he would just pinch open her mouth to dump it. It was a living death.

This method had been abolished by the previous emperor as it was too cruel beyond words. Now Fu Xiuyi had reinstituted this punishment on Ye Mei, cutting off the maiden’s limbs and turning her into this strange thing that was feared and cursed by the ordinary people. It was hell for Ye Mei who had valued her looks more than her own life. She who would climb up the ranks was now lower than the peasants she had sneered at, Fu Xiuyi truly knew her well.

The Lady Mei who was famous for a short while was ruined. Her appearance, abandonment and demise was so quick, leaving only a reputation as a great beauty and of a Daliang spy.

But what of Fu Xiuyi?

Ye Mei’s cursed prophecy was fulfilled.

Even if he had pushed the blame to Ye Mei, the world still looked at him as a joke. As an emperor he had let a spy gotten close to him, only to realize it after the great defeat at the 13th Junction. He was labeled as ‘fatuous’ by the ordinary people who only saw the results and not the process.

Fu Xiuyi became a complete joke, ridiculed all over. As everyone expected, Daliang seized the initiative of the war ever since the 13th Junction. The Ming kept retreating, as if all their previous victories were mere illusions. The strength of Daliang made the people tremble in fear.

At this point, Daqin decided to save itself and surrendered to Daliang. Daliang’s sharp spear now pointed at Ming, and Fu Xiuyi’s knees became weak.

War is ever-changing.

Once Daliang had captured the 13th Junction and used it to stage their counter-attack. Not at Daqin, but at Ming. When the attack began, Daqin quickly sent messengers to negotiate with Daliang. They were willing to pay compensation and cede territories. The war had already drained their treasury and their people were rising against the high taxes. Daqin realized that paying reparations was nothing compared to the destruction of their country.

This was Xie’s credit, he had painted a picture to the Daqin Emperor who thought he would be satisfied with swallowing Ming and would be too exhausted to deal with his country thereafter. This was Xie’s flawless work: he drove a wedge between the two allies.

The Daliang army was approaching the Ming capital.

In the Daliang capital, the Empress let the palace maid pour the wine. This was a private banquet, no officials, no harem members. Only a few people: Shen Miao, Luo Tan, the empress and the Yongle Emperor. They were privately celebrating Xie’s successes.

Once the Ming capital had fallen, Xie will naturally head to Daqin next and remove the thorn once and for all. The war had dragged on so long, now was the moment for Xie to show off his might.

It won’t be long before the war would be over. Then the world will find peace and stability, fulfilling the real wish of everyone.

Looking at Shen Miao’s belly, Luo Tan said: “The doctor said there is still two months before giving birth. Still don’t know if it will be a nephew or niece.”

Shen Miao smiled. “Very quiet, should be a little girl.”

“That is not for certain,” the empress smiled. “There are quiet boys and rowdy girls too. But when Xie returns and finds out that he is a father, you would have a headache.”

Once Xie knows that he had been kept in the dark for so long, he will surely throw a tantrum. But, let it take its course.

The Yongle Emperor was just arriving when he heard this.

He did not see Shen Miao much. He had never been on good terms with her, but because of the child in her stomach and the Empress’s persuasion, his attitude had softened, even sending over medicine to Shen Miao.

Luo Tan felt embarrassed to be part of the four people sharing a table. Fortunately, while the Yongle Emperor still had a cold look, the empress was happy. “Xie’s has done a great achievement. When he returns he must be rewarded. How about giving Shen Miao a title? Their house lacks for nothing, a title would be good.” (no idea if this is what she meant)

Yongle Emperor: “Well…”

The empress turned to ask Shen Miao: “Do you think it’s good?”

Shen Miao did know how to answer, to say yes would annoy the Emperor, to say no would offend the empress. The empress sure was an interesting person to toss her such a problem. Shen Miao laughed: “Let’s talk about it later after Xie returns.”

The empress nodded. “Maybe he has other ideas,” she said. Then she looked at Luo Tan: “When Gao Yang comes back, will you two get married?”

Luo Tan nearly spat the pastry in her mouth, but managed to hold her tongue because it was the empress asking.

Shen Miao laughed: “Let’s not be anxious, this can wait for Gao Yang to decide. Who knows if he has other thoughts.”

Luo Tan was relieved by Shen Miao’s help… yet she can’t help but feel aggrieved. What was this, this was like saying Gao Yang was looking down on her. Wasn’t she a flowery girl, the daughter of the esteemed Luo family… wait, why was she justifying herself?

The Yongle Emperor looked at the empress. “Eat.”

“It is a happy feast after all, why so serious?”

Ever since Xie’s reports, the ministers at court had calmed down a lot. They saw the skill of the two Xie brothers: one was great at administration; the other was great in battle. Even much of the criticism leveled against the Yongle Emperor had died down.

The hard days of the empress seemed to have passed and the feelings of the Yongle emperor had changed, they were becoming almost like a common couple. The emperor had always been strict and this had made the empress overly cautious, but lately whenever the empress made mistakes or showed her true self, the emperor only looked at her.

Shen Miao was of the opinion that the Yongle Emperor was affectionate to the empress. It seemed everything was going well.

The empress proposed an outing the next day, to harvest the snow plums wine that she had buried last year. The emperor looked at her helplessly; she was very excited about brewing tea and making wine, just like a child. But he still nodded in agreement, and the empress was very pleased.

The next day was sunny and the empress was personally digging up the earth. Shen Miao was heavily pregnant and Luo Tan was embarrassed to misuse her great strength and break the jars, and so the empress was excavating with Aunt Tao.

“Enough, it’s not good to hurt your hands,” the Yongle Emperor said.

“I did this with Aunt Tao in all the previous years,” the empress said with a smile even as her forehead was lined with sweat. “This sort of thing must be done personally for the best results. If the emperor wishes to try, you should personally bury a batch next year, then you will understand.”

The Yongle Emperor suddenly grimaced and touched his chest quietly.

The Empress had just excavated the second small jar and unplugged it, holding it up for the emperor to sniff.

“Is it not fragrant?”

“Very fragrant,” the emperor frowned.

She saw his look and took a sniff herself. “Has it gone bad?”

The emperor smiled and was about to say something, but suddenly felt the world go black. He staggered and fell down!

“Emperor!” the empress screamed in shock, dropping the small jar of wine. It spilled, mixing with the dirt and raising a fragrant, bitter aroma.

“Quickly, call the doctor!” Shen Miao ordered, but her heart was full of foreboding.

The finale (v)

The patriarch of the Gao family, Gao Yang’s grandfather Gao Zhan arrived. Gao Yang was the most talented of his generation, but due to a conflict he was driven out of the family. The previous Empress Dowager saw his talent and arranged for him to go to Ming to assist Xie.

The poisoning of Yongle Emperor in his youth was discovered by Gao Zhan himself and if it wasn’t for him, the emperor would have lasted for so long. However, the curse of a lifespan of 35 could not be dispelled, it would take a miracle. But miracles were not easy to make.

Gao Zhan shook his head at the empress, causing her tears to fall.

Luo Tan was not present, but Shen Miao was there. The appearance of the empress made her heart ache. She knew full well of the relationship between the sovereigns: they were introverts but deeply affectionate. Once one is gone, the other would suffer a fatal blow.

“How long does he have?” the empress choked back her tears and asked.

Gao Zhan sighed. “At most, one month.’

“Why?” Shen Miao was shocked.

“The emperor had this condition for many years. During the past year, the toxins have invaded his internal organs, and he has been struggling with his willpower alone. The emperor had endured a lot of pain and exhausted himself. Even now, he is bearing the pain. Empress, if you can, please persuade the Emperor to rest and not burden himself. He had taken responsibilities for others his entire life; it is time for him to be a little selfish. Empress, please accompany his majesty for his final days.”

He bowed and left. Shen Miao did not know how to comfort the empress.

Too many words can be meaningless; one who did not suffer the knife cut would not know the pain.

The Empress smiled wanly and dismisses Shen Miao for her to return.

At her home, Shen Miao could not help but to caress her belly and open the small sachet on the table. The two red beans were clean and complete.

The world had so much death, a person who was laughing one moment could fall dead the next. The Heavens can be too cruel, not willing to give people a good life or good luck; one can only rely on one’s self to survive.

She will protect her lover and loved ones.

The empress was sitting by the bed as the emperor woke.

“Qing Zhen,” the emperor called her name.

“You have awakened, is anywhere uncomfortable?”

“No.”

They remained quiet for a while.

“Qing Zhen, I have not much time left,” the emperor said.

The empress only looked at him.

He continued: “Seems like this winter, I can’t go bury the snow plums with you.”

It was as if she did not hear him, she said: “I broke one jar, but there is one left. If it pleases the emperor, we will find a nice day to visit the Green Lake Pavilion, I am willing to drink with you. But there won’t be any portions for Shen Miao and the rest. The summer view in the pavilion is very good; the flower blossoms will be lively.”

“Qing Zhen, I can’t accompany you.”

The emperor’s face was pale and skinny. Still handsome, but lacking the cold domineering aura of an emperor. Still very noble, but very sad.

He could not see the empress’s face, but he could hear the bitterness in her voice through the mist.

“Emperor is as pitiless as always. You would not spare to lie to me. It is time for me to wake up from this dream.”

The emperor could only say, “I am sorry.”

“The emperor needs not to apologize nor feel sorry to me. My days have nothing to do with the emperor. Gao Zhan said you have been struggling for a year, and I have to ask, why would you do so? Why would you bear with the pain, for what reason?”

“For the sake of Daliang. I want to see the day when Xie Yuan rules the land and protect the country, the days when the world is peaceful. I hoped to see my mother’s wish come true… but I don’t have time left, I cannot see that day.”

The empress was quiet for a long time. “I understand.”

“Qing Zhen… you should plan a future for yourself.”

“What does the emperor wish for me to do?” She said with tears in her eyes. “To change her name and be an ordinary person? To live out her days in the palace? Or to find someone to remarry?”

Each word made her pain more apparent to the Emperor and he feebly clenched his hands underneath the blanket and said, “As long as you are happy.”

The empress suddenly covered her eyes, but he could still see the tears rolling down.

“I understand,” she said calmly. “I thank the emperor for his generosity and thoughtfulness. I will do as you say. Emperor, have you decided the edict yet? I have things to prepare, I shall withdraw now.”

She stood to leave. “Emperor, please take care your health, once you are better, we will share a drink at the Green Lake Pavilion.”

The empress was truly angry. Recently she got along well with the emperor and rarely showed her temper, even smiling softly every day. But now her temper reappeared and her words were as cold as ice, they were infuriating.

After she had left, the emperor coughed. The nearby Eunuch Deng hastened to serve him some warm water.

“Eunuch Deng… am I doing the right thing?” he asked, his face as feeble as a sickly teenager.

Eunuch Deng who had watched him grow up was reminded of the time when the Yongle Emperor had been poisoned. When the boy was informed that he would not live past 35 years, the Eunuch cried for him.

The eunuch could only stay quiet.

“I am envious of Xie Yuan,” the emperor sighed. “Though our lives have been difficult, he has a bit better luck. If I can live longer…”

There are too many things in the world that ended with the word ‘if’.

There are no ‘ifs’ that exist.

The finale (vi)

Ten days later, Xie captured the Ming capital.

The Ming Emperor Fu Xiuyi was killed in a tower during the chaos.

He became an object of ridicule. Fu Xiuyi was the emperor and swore to fight with his soldiers to the very end. As long as the capital stands, he was still the emperor and would never surrender.

But at the very last moment, he changed his mind and wanted to escape, hoping to sneak into the mountains.

Fu Xiuyi had calculated everything but did not take into account the human heart. His closest aides who had already seen the writing on the wall suddenly became furious when he decided to feign his death and escape.

It was his fault for surrounding himself with dubious people that he had recruited with gold and silver or beautiful women, believing in the adage “do not ask the hero’s origin”.

He thought himself to be talented and discerning and thus did not look deeply into the aides that he had recruited. They were all sorts of people: robbers, bandits, even wicked murderers who can kill without blinking. They saw no distinction between good or evil, only following Fu Xiuyi who can satisfy their greed.

Now everything was lost, how can Fu Xiuyi still run?

The most daring and brutal of them tied up Fu Xiuyi in the tower and killed him with arrows. Finally they cut off his head and presented it to Xie, hoping to gain his favour.

Fu Xiuyi who was afraid of the world scheming against him never thought he would end up like this. If he had gone down fighting for his kingdom, he would at least have some integrity. Yet he was unable to save his own life to try for a comeback. He became a prisoner, a prize for the enemy and killed by arrows while in full view of the citizens of the city.

The last thing he saw was a young man on a horse below the tower, his hands holding the reins lazily, looking back at him with a cynical face and clear eyes.

But before he could formulate a thought, he could no longer see anything.

All his scheming, all his ambitions stopped at this moment. He did not understand: he finally became emperor as he had planned to since his youth… how was it that he ended up being defeated by the person whom he was supposed to have eradicated so long ago?

The Heavens were unfair, it was all bad luck!

That was why he lost.

Below the tower, Xie tsked. “To have caused such disloyal hearts in people, Fu Xiuyi is truly talented.”

“Loyalty bought with gold and silver naturally would not last,” Gao Yang said. “Come, let’s enter the city!”

Ji Yushu reported: “Princess Rongxin and the Su family have been saved, now…”

“Protect them. The rest, let them go.”

It took a long time for Shen Miao to receive the news.

She did not expect the enemies of her previous life to be destroyed so cleanly. Yet, she felt it was all justified.

Fu Xiuyi reaped what he had sowed. Ye Mei rode the tiger and got devoured. Those who use others to get what they want, resorting to gold and women, would not last for long. Therefore it was inevitable that Fu Xiuyi be betrayed by his own people; that was why Ye Mei would die at the hands of the man who used to pamper her.

Shen Miao thought she would exhale with relief after learning of their deaths. Yet she felt nothing much in her heart. It was like she only did what she needed to do. Revenge was not as important as the rest of her life.

Because she had something more important, she felt as she looked at her belly.

Hatred and sorrow can trap one in a cycle. Yet she escaped her nightmares because of Xie and her child. The longer one lived, the calmer one’s mind would be. Whatever she could have done for Fu Ming and Wan Yu, she had done it. In this life, she would have to live well.

Luo Tan looked at the flowers. “They have blossomed really well, let’s take a look.”

Shen Miao nodded. The flowers that the Empress liked were blossoming.

Emperor Yongle’s health deteriorated every day. He did not hide his illness from his ministers. The imperial edict had been drafted and his trusted ministers were secretly planning for the smooth transition. When he passes, the edict will be announced to the world. Once Xie returns, he would find the crown’s responsibility waiting for him.

These tidings were not told to Xie. Such knowledge was a burden, and those who knew might not be happy. This was also the Emperor’s choice.

The Empress was the calmest in this period of time, still drinking tea and playing chess and writing every day. The emperor accompanied her, occasionally verbally sparring with Shen Miao. If one ignored his pale looks, one might thought all was well.

In the palace, the empress looked outside. “There was a drizzle today, tonight would be quite cool. There is a jar of snow plum wine left which I am reluctant to finish, but let us drink it tonight.”

The emperor laughed. “A jar? Do you want to get drunk?” he asked very gently.

“If one could get you drunk, why not?” the empress muttered. “One jar isn’t enough for me to get drunk. This much is fine, when I was a child I used to sneak some drinks together with my brothers.”

The Emperor showed a rare interest after hearing her. “That does not sound like what you would do.”

“That was nothing,” she said proudly. “I have never lost when drinking with my brothers. What’s more, my father once said he must find something to get me drunk, but in the end he couldn’t. Once he entered the palace to serve, he stopped drinking.”

“First it’s tea, then it’s wine,” the emperor sighed. “The you right now, is so far from the usual.”

“Drinking tea is to stay alert, drinking wine is to indulge,” she smiled. “Tonight, emperor should relax and indulge in the wine I made.”

“Alright, let this emperor indulge with you.”

It was a late summer night. The wind was a cooling breeze. The lake waters rippled gently.

There was a small pot of wine on the table, a few cakes and two wine bowls.

The emperor raised his eyebrows at the bowls. “Drink using this?”

It was like what Xie loved to do.

“Small sips are unable to draw out the full flavor of the wine,” the empress smiled. “Only by drinking using bowls could one taste the sweetness.”

“You usually drink like this?” the emperor frowned. “Nonsensical.”

“I usually drink alone, no one sees me and it’s none of their business.”

The emperor quietly watched her, one hand with the jar of wine, one hand offering him a drink.

She had made snow plum wine every year, yet this was the first time he had accompanied her. For so many years she had brewed tea, made wine and watched flowers bloom; living freely in the palace. She was a good empress, but almost forgettable. She was still a woman who could feel solitude, someone who would drown her loneliness in alcohol.

Seeing that Aunt Tao and Eunuch Deng were both quite a distance away, the Empress took this rare moment of being alone with the emperor to present her wine bowl.

“Whenever Xie returns, he uses such a bowl to drink with you. I have seen your envious looks. Let’s not think too much tonight, there is only me and I promise not to laugh at you.”

“Nonsense, when was I ever envious?” the emperor grumbled. He picked up the bowl, glanced around and then took a sip.

The empress couldn’t help but smile. “What are you doing? You should learn from me,” she said and heroically drank from her bowl. Yet her movements were still elegant and pleasing to one’s eye.

“Nonsense,” the emperor coughed, but his gaze towards her was very soft.

The empress refilled her bowl and smiled. “When I was young, I studied the history books with father. I was envious of the great heroes written therein. They were righteous, handsome and heroic, ate and drank heartily and cared not for the heavens. I felt such a life was truly worth living. I had hoped to marry such a grand hero, to brew tea for him during the day and share wine with him during the night. “

After saying this, she became wistful, thinking of the past where she was a little girl who drank with her brothers.

“And later?” the emperor prodded.

“And later I married an emperor who did not eat meat nor drank wine. It wasn’t too bad, but everything was cold and severe, I do regret it.”

The emperor stared at her red cheeks. Not sure if she was drunk or not, but he thought that she was, as she would never spout such words and criticize him if she was sober.

“Didn’t you say you are a good drinker? How is it you act crazily in front of me now?”

“I am not drunk,” she said, “I wanted to be, but for many years I had to stay clear-headed.”

The emperor’s smile disappeared.

“Marrying the emperor is my bad luck. Suddenly one has to share the husband with countless other women; furthermore they are ladies from highborn families that can have their own children. I could not have children of my own; it wasn’t good for me to marry.”

She laughed. “That is why I am envious of Shen Miao. Her own life is not easy, she has plenty to worry about. But she is more fortunate than I am as she made her own choice. Xie treats her very well, and he is not as burdened as the emperor is.”

The emperor was silent for a long time, one could hear the frogs croaking in the lake and the wind brushing past the trees.

“You too have a choice, Qing Zhen…”

“I did not have a choice from the very beginning,” she interrupted. “I have given my heart to the emperor, where do I have the mind to think of other choices?”

The emperor was stunned. The empress drank her second bowl of wine.

“Emperor, do you see differently than I? Do you think my life choices were right?”

The empress laughed until her tears fell. “As expected, emperor’s choice was for Empress, and not ‘Qing Zhen’. I know it well.”

She looked at the moon, her eyes glittering. She turned to face him with a gentle and calm expression.

“The things you have told me to do, I have considered them. I think you are right, since I have the rest of my life to live.”

The emperor stared at her and felt a lump in his throat. “Have you... found one?”

“Not yet,” she smiled slightly. “There is no need to rush; such a day will come naturally.”

The emperor could not find the words.

She raised her bowl. “Allow me to toast you this bowl of snow plum wine. As fated husband and wife for all these years, no matter how bitter or sweet, it wasn’t particular good for me but not too bad either. I thank you.”

The emperor also raised his own bowl. He found his own wrists to be trembling slightly, but he concealed it using his sleeves. He drank deeply from his bowl, feeling the scorch of the alcohol, the pain in his heart and all the bitterness of life.

The empress stood up. “Actually, I do want to drink more. But drinking a few bowls with the emperor has emptied the wine. It is disappointing to end such a good night, but I am very happy to have drunk with emperor tonight. You too should retire for the night, please be careful when you return.”

She left.

Her departure was swift. He realized that she was saying goodbye. Now the parting words were said and the final toast had been drunk, all that remains was this moment. Leaving his world step-by-step, never to return.

He looked up to see her departing back. She disappeared into the distance, never looking back, each step taken firmly.

There was a twinge in his chest. A pain radiated from his heart and spread towards all his extremities. His heart thumped rapidly, he gasped for breath and could not speak word.

He fell over from his seat!

Eunuch Deng who was waiting on him was shocked and quickly came over to support him. He saw the emperor’s face had terrible pallor and the lips were trembling. He quickly shouted for the guards and called for the doctor.

The empress was walking in the night, letting the wind soothe the alcohol from her. Her dizziness was blown away, replaced by an annoying awareness.

She knew that she had spoken words out of anger, yet the emperor’s days were few remaining and there were precious few opportunities like this. She did not ask for this, but the emperor took the initiative to ask her questions that she did not want to face.

Aunt Tao was waiting on her: “Your majesty, it is getting cold. Let us return.”

She shook her head. There were prayer beads on her wrist, she had prayed and copied the Buddhist scriptures every night for the emperor’s health, hoping for a miracle from the heavens.

Each of the prayer beads had been rubbed smooth; it was obvious that she had worn it for many years. She looked up at the round moon. It won’t be long till the new year, and she had spoiled the end of the year by mouthing off.

She felt uneasy in her heart. There was a sound of small things clattering to the floor. She looked down, and saw that her prayer beads had fallen off her wrist.

How did it suddenly snap off?

“Aunt Tao…” she muttered, but suddenly she felt her heart tighten, gasping for breath.

“Your majesty!” Aunt Tao exclaimed in shock and rushed to her side.

She brushed her off; instead she squatted in a panic to pick up the fallen beads. “Help me pick these up, quickly!’

Aunt Tao started to kneel when Eunuch Deng arrived with a stricken look. “Empress, the emperor is not good! Quickly, go to him!”

When the empress heard him, her hand loosened. The few beads that she had picked up dropped to the ground and rolled into the pond. They entered into the water with a soft gurgle, never to be seen again.

Outside the hall, all the eunuchs and maids were kneeling. Eunuch Deng stood at one corner, his head hung low and his face was very sad.

When the empress arrived, Gao Zhan was just leaving the inner chamber. He saw her and shook his head.

The empress stumbled and would have fallen if not for Aunt Tao’s help.

“All of you withdraw,” she said. The bed-ridden emperor waved a hand in dismissal, and everyone retired.

The empress walked slowly to his side, still resisting the truth before her. She all but collapsed by his bed.

He stared at her before smiling. “Well, at least I have finally tried your snow plum wine before leaving.”

“Xie Chi…” the empress called out with tearful eyes.

She called him “Xie Chi” his personal name and not ‘emperor’. When she was younger, the empress dowager had revealed her son’s personal name to her. She liked the name and thought it was very suited to his straight and upright personality.

Though he had given her much emotional pain through the years, she found herself inseparable from him.

Was life fated to be such? She unwillingly accepted such a fate, only to find herself unwilling to let go at the end.

“Qing Zhen… I can no longer be with you,” the emperor apologized. “When you married me, I thought you would be protected. But for so many years you received nothing.”

His speech was slow, and he had to stop after a few words as it was difficult for him to talk.

“Don’t say anymore,” the empress urged.

Ever since the two of them became monarchs, one became “Emperor” and the other “Empress”, only using formal speech. Only at the very end that he used “you and I” like an ordinary couple.

“Live your days well. You will be able to live happily in the future. When you remarry, don’t find someone as selfish as me, find someone who can care for you and love you…”

The empress cried.

Suddenly she felt her hand being gripped; saw that the emperor was looking directly at her.

He clenched his teeth and said: “But I’m unwilling. I am selfish… you are my woman, I don’t want you to have another man.”

She stared at him in shock.

“This past year I have worked, because I wanted a few more days… Not because to see Xie Yuan settle the world. He already has. There is nothing left for me to hold on… except for you. I can’t bear it… even if I can stay married to you for just half a day more, it will be good enough.”

“When we first met and then you were called to the palace… it was not my mother’s idea. It was mine. It was me who told mother that you are very good. For so many years, you thought I was satisfied at having a good ‘empress’, but that is not true. Any one can be an empress if she does things well… I lied. It had to be you; it had to be you from the beginning. I lied to you.”

The empress wailed. “Why did you not tell me earlier?”

The emperor’s face turned deathly pale, his voice almost inaudible. “Pity that my life isn’t good… I have troubled you a lifetime…”

He reached out to wipe her tears, but his hand only rose up weakly before falling back limply.

His eyes closed.

The empress cried from the very depths of her heart, unable and unwilling to hear anything. She buried her voice in the thick bedding, as if wanting to drown herself in it so that she would not hear anything, not see anything, not to want anything.

The incense smoke coiled from the copper furnace, there was only a stifling sensation in the room. Outside, the moon was bright and gentle, as if everything was just a dream.

After a long while, the empress stood up. She gently fixed the emperor’s bedding, organized her hair with the mirror and wiped away her tears.

She slowly opened the doors.

Kneeling outside were the palace people, with Eunuch Deng at their head.

The empress calmly informed them: “The emperor has passed away.”

Eunuch Deng fell to his knees and put his head to the ground several times.

Seeing him so, the rest of the eunuchs and maids too knocked their heads and lamented, their voices ringing throughout the palace.

“The emperor has passed away!”

Shen Miao looked at the empress who wore a plain white dress, a calm and gentle expression on the monarch’s face, as if her heart was unshakable.

After a brief commotion, things quieted down.

Before his death, the emperor had done all the necessary, from handing down his will to quashing any possible turmoil in the palace. Although some people were eager to act, the troops and guards prepared by the emperor were not for show. Moreover, Xie had been regular in sending back good news, and everyone knows the emperor was childless and his only blood relative was this brother. It was an undeniable fact that had decided matters.

It was not undisputed, but doubts eventually fade away. Xie had shown his courage and ability, together with the emperor’s prepared arrangements and a stable imperial court meant that at this moment there was no chaos. Perhaps they knew that once Rui Wang returns, he would be coming back with not just news of victory but also the conquests of Daqin and Ming. He would have unified the land and dispelled the chaotic times, making the throne seemingly insignificant in comparison.

It would be better for them to be docile and law-abiding, await the ascendance of the new emperor and thereby gain a share of the merits.

That was the opinion of the imperial court, but what of the imperial harem?

The women in the harem had lost the monarch on which they had depended on, and naturally they are in a loss. Some only look forward to death, but many more had their own lives to live. The Yongle Emperor’s women were mostly the daughters of the courtly ministers and they had entered the palace on their own initiative. Besides, the emperor was a cold person: besides favoring the deceased Concubine Lu, he had never been a lustful person. There was no true love from them. After the passing of the emperor, these ladies sought the help of their families to find better days for the rest of their lives.

The empress calmly handled everything. The country mourned as the emperor was placed in the imperial tomb. He did not ask for the custom of having others buried with him; he had explained his wishes to Eunuch Deng and it was handled accordingly.

Shen Miao visited the empress at night. Ever since the emperor’s entombment, she had been even more serene. It was the Mid-Autumn Festival. The moon was up in the night sky, the sounds of qin music floated from inside the palace.

Shen Miao had the palace maids withdraw. The empress gave her a tired smile.

“You are here.”

“It is getting cold, your majesty. Please wear more clothes. If you wish to listen to the qin music, allow me to light up a stove,” Shen Miao said.

The empress smiled but did not assent. Instead she pointed to the moon cakes on the table and offered it to Shen Miao.

“Let’s eat together,” Shen Miao laughed.

The empress waved a hand. “We have no appetite.”

It wasn’t appropriate for her to use the royal honorifics. From transmitting the previous emperor’s will to Xie’s eventual return, Shen Miao was the empress-in-waiting. But neither of them cared for the formalities.

“These days I have been thinking of the past. I had thought that once the emperor was gone, I would have slowly gotten used to it as it had been a long, inevitable fact. Yet as the days passed, it felt more and more unfamiliar. My heart feels empty, with less and less things able to fill it. Shen Miao, did you feel the same when Xie had left?”

Shen Miao paused.

Felt empty? Of course. She had often felt that nothing caught her eye, that the world had become grey. Only after they became apart did she realized what she had lost. Once separated, one could understand their own feelings. But…

Shen Miao caressed her belly. If not for this little child in the belly, the days would be long and torturous.

“You are not like me,” the empress continued. “Before, I did not know who you were. I had your affairs investigated. I have heard that you are a resourceful woman who fought against the Ming royalty and protected your family. From the start, you are someone who had her own way of thinking. For Xie to marry you was coincidental. If you had not met him, you would still have your own life, because your initial goal was not to be someone’s wife.

“But I am different. My family was influential and prosperous, and there were no conflicts with other ministers. We had little to worry about. When I first met the emperor, I felt the most important thing was for me to be his wife and live a lifetime with him. Maybe because the early part of my life was too carefree, that was why I did not know that to be a wife was such a difficult thing.”

She rested her head on her arm as if falling asleep.

Shen Miao kept quiet.

The empress was very bitter. Lately she did not say anything, but Shen Miao understood her. Talking would not change anything, yet at times it was a good outlet. It was good that the empress was pouring her heart now.

“The emperor is gone and I do not know what else to do. The harem is dispersed, and the once noisy palace is now cold and empty, letting me feel lonely. I now think that it would have been better to have not met the emperor and to fight the royalty just like you to protect my own family and avoid such a fate.”

Her words were too sad and too regretful. Shen Miao comforted her: “I had felt the same. No one has a life that is always smooth and peaceful. Ever since my birth, other than the concern from my parents there was nothing for me to be thankful to the heavens for. I dared not to simply hope for good days, and so I had to depend on myself. To meet Xie was a blessing, but even if it would be much harder without him, I would still go on. Empress, you are the same. Though the emperor had left, you are thinking of yourself and of your future. The road may be difficult, but it is yours to walk. This is what the emperor wanted to see.”

The empress was silent for a long time, so long that Shen Miao thought the empress had not heard her words. Then she heard: “Thank you.”

“The words you said were the truth, I understand. Just... it’s difficult. Too difficult.”

Shen Miao and the empress were together for a long time that night. They did not speak much, yet much was exchanged.

After Shen Miao had left, the empress remained for a long time. Aunt Tao came in to urge her to rest and she acquiesced. But once the doors were closed, she sat back up.

She lit the lights and rummaged to find her clothes. Not the dress of an empress, but a simple white dress. She loved the simple and refreshing color. Ever since she became empress, she could no longer wear such styles. She had to wear grand and exquisite clothes to keep the harem in check.

She looked outwardly calm, but she was an introverted girl who didn’t like to talk much.

She wore the simple dress and sat in front of the mirror. She cleaned her brows and wore the rouge to pretty up. She then took out pen and paper and wrote a letter, putting it into an envelope.
Finally, from the bottom drawer of the cabinet the empress retrieved a delicate jade box that was covered in dust.

When she first married the emperor, she had known of his condition. To marry a man who would suddenly die took a lot of courage.

But she was the bravest of women and resembled a hero. Though the emperor was not a hero, he was tyrannical and played with people’s hearts, not especially righteous and can be quite shady, yet she felt he was her hero.

From the beginning, to the end.

She took out a slender vial from the box. On the day of her marriage, she had prepared this bottle for herself. She faced the mirror and said to herself: Qing Zhen, the people in the jianghu are righteous and brave, dared to love and hate, though you were born in a minister’s house, you yearned for their way of life. If the day comes when he had to leave, you must follow. This is your decision.
For so many years, every year, the empress took out the bottle. Fortunately it was not used. Every year she stole time from the heavens and she was happy.

Now it was time to take it out.

She was a coward, too afraid to live the rest of her life after Xie Chi had left.

She was brave, daring to continue her path even though she already knew the ending.

“Xie Chi, I am coming to see you,” she whispered and drank the contents.

The moon slowly rose from the clouds, hanging high on the willow branches, as if watching the joys and sorrows of the world with a smile.

A perfect scene, able to move one to cry.

Shen Miao’s sleep that night was restless. The dream was particularly unclear and noisy, and she was unable to understand.

Her maid woke her up and Shen Miao saw that the sun was up. She touched her forehead: it was lined with cold sweat and her heart was uneasy.

Luo Tan burst in, her eyes red as she ran to Shen Miao.

“The empress has died!” she said.

Something slipped from the hand of Shen Miao’s maid, causing a shattering sound as it fell to the ground.

It was a rare autumn day with good weather.

Shen Miao was in the garden reading the memorials. Luo Tan somehow found a kite and rediscovered her childish heart, playing with the maids of the palace. Infected by her laughter, Shen Miao could not help but smile.

Eunuch Deng appeared in a rush, his face solemn. Shen Miao saw that he had urgent news and went inside.

“It’s not good, the Lu family is attacking the palace!”

Shen Miao frowned. “The Lu family? Weren’t they eradicated in Fuyang?”

“In the Lu family there was a miss, her husband is a military officer who was raising a private army. When the Lu family was besieged, they were not in the city and pretended to be ordinary civilians. They maintained close ties with the Ye family, and when the Ye family was suppressed, Ye Maocai had given them huge funds. Now they have weapons and horses, and they plan to seize the palace. They are already attacking the city,” Eunuch Deng said.

“Princess Rui!” Eunuch Deng remonstrated. “You cannot put aside your own safety. If you fall into danger, how would one account to Rui Wang!”

“It is not that I want to do so,” Shen Miao said. “But, are those people really only outside the city? I am afraid they have long infiltrated inside. What they want to do is alarm the people. If the guards remain in the palace, it would be easy for them to stoke the fears of the people with a few words. Even if the palace is impenetrable, once the people are shaken, everything will fall apart. Especially since he is coming back, the more we cannot afford to fall into chaos.”

She saw the disapproving look on Eunuch Deng. She said, “Moreover, I would not joke around with my own life. Before Xie had gone, he had placed people with me. They will protect me.”

Some of Xie’s elite soldiers had stayed back and then followed Shen Miao into the palace. Her heart is clear: there was no other choice. This final move of Lu Zhengxuan and Ye Maocai was nauseous and disgusting. If Shen Miao was selfish and did not care for the fate of the people, it would affect Xie’s enthronement in the future and give him a terrible reputation. A new emperor must ensure that he has the hearts of the people. If he lost their support, the foundations will be unstable.

It is for Xie’s sake that the guards cannot stay within the palace.

When Eunuch Deng saw that she had made up her mind, he no longer protested and made the arrangements as she commanded.

Shen Miao was not a flighty person. Her brows tighten. Things have head to such a juncture; enemies had taken the chance to attack when she was giving birth soon.

No matter the cost, she must protect the child in her stomach.

Hearing the news, Luo Tan came over. She too was worried and tried to persuade her. “Cousin, it’s better to go elsewhere and hide until the child is born. It is not safe to remain in the palace. Everyone knows you are here. There are too few guards here; they will definitely attack the palace.’

Shen Miao shook her head. “If I run, I am afraid that those people will accuse me of escaping by myself. This palace is the central position of authority. If I retreated and allowed those thieves to enter, the prestige of the royal family will collapse.

“But…”

“But nothing. In a few days Xie will be back. As long as we can hold out for these few days, it will be all fine.”

As Shen Miao expected, on the second day the streets and alleys were full of rumors that the Princess of Rui had taken the soldiers to protect her escape, disregarding the life and death of the common folk. They say the Daliang palace had been abandoned while the rebel thieves were fighting the city garrison at the gates, threatening to break through soon. When that day comes, rivers of blood will flow.

“Let the court session begin,” she ordered.

The officials glanced at each other before one of them stepped forward. “Princess Rui, wouldn’t this be too risky?”

This person had objected to Shen Miao’s presence in the beginning; he was the most vocal of the opposition. But in recent days, he had quieted down and dutifully accepted her.

“By taking the risk, only then the people will believe that we have not abandoned them in their darkest hour.” She stood up with the assistance of her maid Jing Zhe, as wearing the royal trappings made it inconvenient to move about.

The palace was more like a castle than an opulent mansion. She led the hundred officials up the tower, and more and more civilians began to gather below. Mo Qing took charge of the guards, ready to prevent an assassination attempt.

Someone in the crowd recognized Shen Miao and excited shouted: “It’s the Princess of Rui!”

Immediately there was a surge in the crowd, causing fears of a stampede towards the tower. Shen Miao looked down and slowly opened her mouth:

“People, lately there have been many rumors. The scrap remnants of the Lu and the Ye are using vile methods with the intention of misleading people.”

In the wind, she was not loud or soft; yet it had a firm tone that let the people feel the determination in her voice.

“Don’t be fooled by them. I swear in my name as Princess of Rui, I stand and fall together with the city! I live together with you, and will fight together with you!”

There were sighs of relief from the civilians, but there were still doubters.

“Our Daliang army is outside of the city. I am here, and I am of the Xie royal family. The Xie’s honor is not extinguished, I will not escape. Our generals and soldiers will not retreat, we can be defeated but we will not flee. What’s more, how can mere remnants cause shake us? What a joke!”

The people watched as she spoke resoundingly, she was a young woman who wore royal robes. Her chin was slightly raised, letting the people see a glimpse of her arrogant, majestic aura.

“That is why: don’t believe in the rumors, don’t spread them, don’t be afraid and don’t worry. I am right here in this palace, who dares to come?”

Her purple cloak fluttered in the wind, and raised high above was the flag.

The common folk were silenced, and then they cheered as one, their voices ringing loudly and shook the heavens!

Nobody would decline a victory. To inspire the civilians, there needed a powerful oath. Though there was no ruler present, this woman was there to uphold the great cause, her courage causing eliciting admiration and assurance.

It was a very awesome sight.

The civil and military officials standing behind her were much moved by the scene.

This was the power of speech; this woman was able to evoke their passions and make their blood boil, invisibly strengthening the city gates.

Shen Miao turned and left.

Over the next few days, the slanderous rumors were quelled. Dissenting voices were shouted down. After all, Shen Miao personally ascended the tower during such a critical situation. Words can inspire people reveal the power of the human heart.

However, the situation outside of the city remained chaotic as the Lu and Ye forces intensified their assault.

Shen Miao read the memorials and petitions as well as making arrangements for the guards to reinforce the garrison soldiers, becoming busy the whole day. She was heavily pregnant and yet she felt that she could leave her responsibilities.

One day she got up early and saw Luo Tan rushing in. “Cousin, someone is here to see you.”

Shen Miao frowned. “Who?”

While in the palace, other than talking to the officials there were no others who would come to see her. She had no relatives nor friends, the ones closest to her were already in the palace.

“Let me help you up to see,” Luo Tan said.

Helped by Luo Tan, Shen Miao went out to the main hall and saw someone sitting at the table, being served tea by her maid Jing Zhe.

Shen Miao whispered: “Pei Lang?”

He turned his head.

During the past year, too many things had happened. When Pei Lang decided to leave, in some ways it was the best choice. With their knowledge of their past lives, they did not know how to face each other.

Pei Lang smiled. “I heard the country in trouble and the palace in danger. Though I don’t have any special talents, I can at least help share the burden.”

Shen Miao frowned and did not speak for some time.

Pei Lang: “Don’t think too much into it. I am from Ming, Daliang is at least a neighbor. Moreover we are teacher and student and not insignificant friendship. It is right for me to help.”

He smiled, as if the past had never happened. Shen Miao looked at him carefully and saw he was serene, as if he had let go of the past and removed a burden from his heart.

For Shen Miao, the past was long gone. She was more concerned with the future, and Pei Lang’s appearance can indeed be helpful in solving many problems.

“I owe you yet another favor,” she said. He had taken a knife for her last time.

Pei Lang said quietly: “Owe?” He laughed. “Good that it can be thought of that way.”

He looked up at Shen Miao. “Lets not waste time, let us begin to handle matters, the country is the most important thing.”

The most important thing was to clear out the rebels and ensure the safety of the city’s population. Because of the conflict, the memorials were endless. For the heavily pregnant Shen Miao to handle alone was stretching her to the limits.

After Pei Lang had arrived, the burden on Shen Miao became lighter.

He was after all the chief advisor for Fu Xiuyi, he understood the matters of the court. Furthermore, he had a natural talent in this regard. Even though it was his first time in the Daliang court, it was as if he was very used to the work.

However there was still the difficulty of manpower. To protect the city civilians would require drawing off soldiers fighting the rebels. It was a headache inducing problem, a risk nobody wanted to take; yet a stalemate was also not the solution.

“We only need to delay for a month. Once Xie returns, these rebels will be cleaned up,” Shen Miao said. “It is good enough to resist for this period of time.”

Pei Lang helped to read the documents. They did not discuss their past lives or other sensitive matters, as if they were all things long gone. There was no point in raking over the past, sometimes playing the fool is the best way to get along.

When Pei Lang saw the mentally crippled Ye Hongguang, his gaze lingered for a long time. He too saw the startling similarities between Ye Hongguang and Fu Ming. Therefore he was exceptionally gentle and considerate to Ye Hongguang who was pleased to play with him.

“However,” Pei Lang said with concern, “The Lu rebels also know about the inevitable. But I have consulted with the garrison commander yesterday: the rebels did not make any moves yet. They are behaving abnormally, and I feel they are preparing something.”

“No matter what they are planning, our situation does not change,” Shen Miao sighed. “I thought Daliang’s security was solid and impenetrable. Who’d knew the Lu family still had this hidden card.”

“The Lu family hates the royal family and yet they know they can’t win, thus they kept this trump card for this very last minute.”

“The old thieves are unwilling to die peacefully,” Shen Miao said as she took the memorials. “But we cannot abandon this country, nor allowed it to fall.”

Luo Tan came over with a food basket. “You two have been reading for so long, but it’s time to eat. Especially you, cousin. You are not only eating for yourself anymore, there is a child too. It’s your child, but I still don’t know if it’s a nephew or a niece!”

She took out the cakes and soup. “Mr Pei Lang, please eat some too. I have seen these prepared in the kitchen with my own eyes, they are clean!”

Luo Tan had been idling and bored in the palace for days. She could not help Shen Miao and Pei Lang to read the memorials, and so her thoughts were occupied with the little child. The palace had many people and who knew what were in their hearts? Luo Tan moved a little stool to the kitchens to keep watch on the cooking.

Shen Miao smiled lightly. “Thanks for your hard work.”

Pei Lang’s eyes fell on her stomach. “The day should be soon?” he asked hesitantly.

“Don’t know the actual day,” Shen Miao said. “But I feel it should be soon.” She caressed her belly gently. “For it to be born in such chaotic time, it will be really difficult for him.”

“What chaotic time?” Luo Tan protested. “What cousin said is wrong. Today the world is at peace and there is a future of bright prosperity. When brother-in-law comes back, this little fella will have a war-hero of a father. The entire world will be cheering for his birth, who else can get such glory? Such a good fate, but your mouth made it sound like a bad thing.”

Shen Miao laughed. “You are so glib, why not be a singer story-teller?”

“If I do become one, I would be the best in the world,” Luo Tan said proudly.

Pei Lang’s words were prophetic, his fears were realized two days later.

Especially at this critical juncture, mistakes could not be tolerated. As long as they held out, Xie would return in time to settle the troubles. After the extinction of Ming and Daqin, there would be only one flourishing country in the world, and this country would be in the hands of Xie.

This was to alleviate the tense atmosphere.

However, the guards would come in regularly to report the situation in the city. The rebels were attacking fiercely, killing civilians in their path and wanting to cause panic everywhere. Fortunately Shen Miao had dispatched the imperial guards to fight against the Lu, and nobody could get the upperhand.

The rebels were truly cunning: on one hand they were openly causing disorder among the people, on the other they were infiltrating the civilians to secretly attack the palace. They could hear the shouts of the soldiers outside from time to time, and with the occasional fires being set, none were truly calm.

It was like a bow, being pulled tautly and then loosened. Every move affected the heart, making it difficult to settle down.

The night felt exceptionally long, the smoke from the incense burners seem to hang in the air, giving off fragrance but also obscuring the scene.

At dawn, the ruckus outside were diminishing.

Eunuch Deng and Aunt Tao were relieved.

The captain of the imperial guards came in. “Reporting to the princess: the Lu rebels have already retreated, and those remaining in the city have been cleared. The garrison is now placating the citizens.”

The crisis had passed.

Luo Tan stretched, she had played with the chained rings but could not solve it. It was not that she was not clever, but it would take a miracle as her mind had been distracted the entire night. The captain also smiled. “The princess too have worked hard.”

To remain calm at such a critical juncture and even stay up the entire night at the palace was in some way fighting together with them. For a woman to do so was admirable. Everyone could see what sort of a person she was. If she had escaped by herself, the city would have been lost.

Pei Lang looked up from the documents and smiled at Shen Miao.

“Since things have been settled, the princess should rest. Staying awake for the whole night is not what a pregnant woman should do,” Aunt Tao said anxiously.

Helped by Aunt Tao, Shen Miao took a step and felt something in her stomach. She stopped.

Luo Tan saw this and said: “You have been sitting for a long time, your legs must be stiff. Let me give you a massage, otherwise it would be difficult for you to walk.”

“No,” Shen Miao forced herself to calm down. “First help me call for the midwives to come.”

But Shen Miao’s heart was not as tranquil. Regarding childbirths, she had to think back of her past life long ago, when Fu Xiuyi did not care about her. She had given birth with great difficulties and uncertainties.

Now this child was carrying the hopes of everyone in the world. Whether to Xie or her own self, or Empress Xiande or Emperor Yongle or to the Shen family, this baby would definitely be a precious treasure. But the more you cherish something, the more you are afraid of losing it.

She forced herself to breath and exhaled deeply to clear out such worries from her mind.

“Princess Rui, please eat first,” Midwife Li said, holding up a bowl of sweet soup with egg for her. “You will need a lot of energy and time to give birth.”

Though she had no appetite, Shen Miao forced herself to finish the food.

“Princess Rui is not at all squeamish,” Midwife Liu praised. “In the past there were daughter-in-laws who throw their temper. Those wives from wealthy families are especially picky. They would refuse to eat and yet complain of being uncomfortable and the lacking strength during the childbirth, just causing trouble for themselves. Princess Rui is very sensible; the child will be delivered very smoothly.”

The midwives saw Shen Miao’s gentle and calm demeanour and not all bothered by her origins as a Ming person. They chatted and fawned over her.

Shen Miao knew they were trying to distract her so as to pass the time. The true ordeal had yet to start.

Outside, Aunt Tao and the rest were waiting.

“My heart is beating so fast. I don’t know if cousin will give birth to a boy or a girl, after so long, I can finally get an answer.”

“No matter if it’s a princess or princess, his majesty Xie would be happy when he returns,” Aunt Tao laughed. “Just that don’t know how long we have to wait.”

The midwives called the maids for clear water, towels, clean scissors and other useful items. Luo Tan wanted to enter but was persuaded not to by Aunt Tao. Instead, Aunt Tao and a few of the palace ladies as well as Jing Zhe and Gu Yu went in to watch the procedure.

Shen Miao was lying on the bed.

She did her utmost to endure the severe pain, hour after hour. It was the most pain she had experienced since her rebirth, as if someone was using a pair of scissors messing up the insides of her belly.

“Princess, push with your strength!” Midwife Li said. “I can see the child’s shape!”

Outside, Pei Lang and the rest were restless.

From time to time, the palace ladies were carrying out silver basins filled with shocking amounts of blood. Luo Tan anxiously grabbed one of the older mama beside her and asked, “What is happening, why is there so much blood?”

Pei Lang’s heart was shaking violently.

“Princess...” the two midwives did not speak on.

“What is going on?” Luo Tan asked while crying. “What happened to cousin, why do you say such things?”

“The princess’s body was already weak, furthermore she gave birth to twins. She was already fatigued and her condition wasn’t stable. Now her body is exhausted and lost too much blood…” Midwife Liu said, unable to continue.

“My body is unwell, not suitable for childbirth. I… I am afraid I can’t go on. Cousin, when you see my father, mother and brother, tell them I am unfilial for not being able to serve them in their old age.”

She took a deep breath, as if her strength had all been exhausted. “When you see Xie, tell him, I am sorry, I can’t wait any more. Thank him for always protecting me willingly, for tolerating me and for us to be husband and wife. I… I am very happy…”

“Princess!” Aunt Tao shouted.

“Let me see the children…” she said.

The midwives had cleaned the babies and swaddled them and placed them by her side.

Aunt Tao said tearfully, “Two little princes, they are very healthy.”

Shen Miao’s eyes fell on her two children. She struggled to stretch her fingers over their eyebrows. She whispered: “When these two grow up, they will be very handsome. Daliang attacked and occupied Daqin’s capital Xunyang. With this, the three kingdoms were finally united into one by the young Rui Wang after more than a hundred years of separation. The heroes ended their grand journey and Daliang was triumphant.

The loser became a bandit, the winner became the king; in the end the defeated were annihilated. The world now only had the Daliang Emperor, there will be no more Emperor of Ming nor Emperor of Daqin.

History only remembers the winners. Though the people of the defeated kingdoms may lament their fate, if their previous rulers were tyrannical and the new sovereign was kind and generous, then the people will naturally side with the new.

The Daliang soldiers were returning, bringing back glory home. Those who were still alive had a bright future to look forward to, those who had died were proudly honoured.

The people of the Daliang capital could not wait to celebrate their return.

But even as the people were preparing to celebrate, the palace was cold and gloomy.

Luo Tan was sitting in the yard as the rare autumn sun shone warmly. The maids Jing Zhe and Gu Yu were drying out the books, laying them out in the floor.

Luo Tan squatted wistfully. “In Spring City, she used to sun these books. I had thought that books will spoil inevitably and it was pointless. Didn’t expect that I would do this errand for her now.”

The man dressed in green beside her remained quiet.

Pei Lang seemed to have aged overnight. Without Shen Miao, he could not even read the court petitions and memorials and thus only read books and did little else. Such waste of time was bitter to him.

There was no happiness in the palace.

Aunt Tao took the two children out. Luo Tan quickly stood to hold one of them.

“The two young princes are very healthy,” Aunt Tao said. “The wet nurse said they are very well behaved and quiet at night.”

Finally, there was a smile on Luo Tan’s face. “Such behaviour, they surely gotten it from their mother.”

Her voice stopped.

Pei Lang saw the two children and light returned to his eyes.

“Which is the elder, which is the younger, I really can’t tell,” Luo Tan rubbed the baby’s head. “They look exactly the same now, what more in the future?”

Aunt Tao laughed. “Of course, they can be dressed up different. And surely they will grow up with different temperaments, and then it would be easy to tell them apart.”

“But what to call them?” Luo Tan was troubled. “Which is the elder, which is the younger. Cousin didn’t even give them names yet…”

Xie’s brows furrowed. “Where’s Shen Miao?”

He had barely said it when Luo Tan and Aunt Tao came over with the children in their arms. Pei Lang was following behind them.

The babies awoke just then, excitedly waving their small hands under the warm sun very cutely.

Xie’s halted in his steps.

“Where’s Shen Miao?” he slowly asked.

Pei Lang stepped forward. “Go and see her,” he said quietly.

The white-bearded Gao Zhan shook his head. “I have tried my best to preserve her life. Her body is exhausted, but she had a strong will to live, perhaps she felt she had an unfulfilled wish and refused to give up her last breath. I have used a golden needle to seal this last breath to save her life, but that is all that I could have done.”

“Grandfather, what do you mean?” Gao Yang asked. For so many years he had been exiled from the Gao family and went on his own path and never contacted them since. A single word ‘grandfather’ caused Gao Zhan to tremble slightly.

Xie Jing Xi takes over the empire after the death of the brother and the suicide of the empress. The brother didn't leave any heir because the empress had became sterile.
MC become the empress and a war against Ming Qi starts.
Mei furen was part of the Mei family, a corrupted noble family of the Xie empire. To avoid her death along her siblings she stole secret information to give to Ming Qi. But the documents had been switched by the MC.
So Fu Xiu Yi gets the wrong informations about Xie Jing Xi's battle strategy and recompense Mei with a high concubine position. Xie Jing Xi let them believe that they can win but instead destroy them.
Mei Furen is tortured as a punishment by Fu Xiu Yi that later gets killed by his own men.

Not long after, there's a cute moment where the MC asks for the ML's help with something (they're allies at this point, though it's not really an equal give-and-take since the ML has more power & resources than the MC, naturally, but he doesn't care and, I think, is already at the point where he would do anything for her, for free). And get this: when she asks him for this favor, he asks for "repayment" and lists some things that the MC should do for him--write him a poem, bake him cookies etc. That is, precisely all the things that were previously mentioned as what he had heard that the MC used to do when chasing the 9th Prince. The MC is nonplussed at his odd request and doesn't get why he's suddenly being so weird, lol.

Another example: The MC comes from a powerful military family, and moreover, in this life, her family didn't fall and managed to maintain their prestige and power (and even increase their status) due to the MC's smart strategizing. So the MC is a desirable marital catch for the princes of the royal family, who would use her family's military might to pave their way to the throne. So anyway, at one point pretty late in the novel, it becomes obvious in the capital (there's a chain of events) that an imperial decree is imminent, which is going to force the MC to marry a prince even against her will. The only solution is for the MC to quickly marry another man, before the Emperor sends the marriage decree down. Problem is, all noble families already know that the MC is being eyed for an imperial marriage, and nobody dares to cross the Emperor. That is, until various suitors actually start to assemble anyway, lol, one by one, and ask for the MC's hand. There's a maternal cousin (who likes her), there's her former teacher Peilang (who likes her and feels indebted to her, though he still doesn't remember why), there's the ML's best friend (who doesn't like her, but his family mistakenly thinks he does, and has come to arrange a marriage for him, lol) etc. Of course, the ML wants to marry her too, by this point, and he's definitely not pleased to hear about all the "competition." He quickly goes and blackmails the Emperor himself quite spectacularly (and shamelessly), and secures a marriage decree for himself with the MC.

There are quite a few such examples throughout the novel, just funny little moments, but it's more about the hero's attitude and frowny face, and the way he then plots in the shadows to get what he wants from the heroine, and not about anything very overt. The hero is quite a yandere, and the romance development is slow (because of the heroine), and also, this is not the type of novel where the hero would feel jealous and then forcefully kiss the MC etc. It's more subtle than that, but still really obvious (and gratifying) if you read carefully.
