Excluding web or light novels which involved characters being trapped or transferred into a game. When exactly did this trope originate from, since it's now a conventional method of OP, MAX, ???, etc. level characters to start the story, that either hits or miss with the readers. I never actually thought about it, but which novel or should say timeline did authors start utilizing the "Status" concept? Any ideas, folks?

After games began using leveling, status, stat distribution.

This is only my thoughts tho, so just stay calm and read more.

DragonMage makes a good point. I also think it originated from Japanese Novels

I believe it first started from games (RPGs) and then novels with game settings then it just became this idea of the easiest way to make an OP MC . The perfect example is the Gamer , it shows how powerful having system with no Levelling caps can be

Sword Art Online perhaps? It was probably the most popular one of it's genre when it came out years ago.

Or maybe .hack//Sign which is pretty old and a classic.

Nah, The Gamer is a newbie in that department .

The one that really started the boom is SAO, but the concept already started way before (hack series, etc)

From what I read from a prompt last year on Qidian, it came from the decline of the game setting novels. Like they were huge for a while but then the popularity started to decline quickly and the system novels appeared from that as a way to pick the best elements from the game setting and still be interesting to the readers. I'm not sure what I remember is correct but thats the idea that stuck to me :)

Sword art online even thought it was not the first it had the biggest impact. The gamer came a little later. If I remember correctly. .Hack was also one of the oldest but to me it was boring AF. So it didn't have much of a impact on the majority of the anime and manga communities.

Yeah, it's the one with anime adaptation. I really like the soundtrack from the series.

Not so sure about it being single player game, I remember it was mmorpg from the start

I mean sao was the one that popularized trapped in a game but it never really had much to do with statuses beyond just saying kirito is bullshit and has a unique skill

The gamer was the one who popularized real life is a game and "I have a status" in an urban setting atleast its status heavy with alot of skill descriptions and stat points
