    i have read several korean wn and there is some reference about some legendary game from around 2000ish and still popular till 2010is and today still has some influence, this game become something like nostalgia fad for today middle aged man as their youthful passion.
    So which game is it?

    i have several candidate but i don't think its quite right

    p.s it is online game

    It was played much like DotA before Garena or Steam, via LAN.

    It was their national sport for a time.

    It's definitely not Lineage, i've played it and i don't see it. I believe it's just left to the imagination to make sure it fits a wider audience. If anything, even while playing Lineage i noticed the influences Starcraft had in online games when people used terms like 'getting Zerged'.

    Starcraft was also one of the last games without dlc and non internet conected multiplayer...and you could copy it without a problem and "play" against the same key version on other pc without cracks, mods etc thats why it was popular.

    Starcraft its the most likely candidate, Warcraft might apply too.

    These game have multiplayer components and many novels i have read make mentions of one or both.

    Do not remember a novel by now not a fan sf novels, but the ID got a nice zerg in omake as far as i remember.

    Edit: Read on own risk
    there is a Queen in Sin City novel which has some characteristic from Starcraft 2 Zergs
