I think the author's other work is below this one. In MAM he keeps it all sort of simple and focuses more on the romance and characters, which I think are things he's better at. Throne is too much all over the place. Lord of the Mysteries might be good, or great actually, although I feel a bit conflicted about the weird power system.

I've heard Ice and Fire is shonen manga: the novel. Is it worth a try despite that?

You can just open the comments of that chapter without reading it. In the comments of the chapter there was a link to a QI forum thread that mentioned MAM, and in that thread CKTalon replied saying it's being worked on.

It was like two weeks ago or less, so relatively recent if that's what you were after. That's about all I remember.
