MC: *encounters a powerful wolf monster*
Me: "This better not be a goddamn Fen-"
MC: "Oh no it's a Fenrir!"
    Me: "F**k!!"

Anybody else getting tired of seeing Fenrir constantly popping up in novels all the time?

    nope.

bothered by quite a few other overused myths/legends/whatever, but that is usual if you stay in a genre. just switch through them

Honestly, I never knew what a fenrir was before this post.

And no, it should be common if the story is imitating an RPG. Its a clever way to let players know what type of opponent they're facing. It's easy to guess it would be fast with a powerful bite so it becomes like an unwritten tutorial in games secretly guiding you. So novels that are trying to make shit game like (mostly isekai stuff) follow this troupe too.

But dragons encompass quite a lot of different.. uhh, 'species',
Meanwhile Fenrir is supposed to be a proper noun,

And so is Minotaurus, but this one is already so far gone it's useless to complain about it...

More like David and Goliath (in spirit, at least), with the MC (obviously) being David. :blobcheeky:

Dragons are more of a species. Like giants or elves.

Fenrir is a specific monster. Maybe like the Monkey King or Mount Tai.

I don't think any one is particularly overused. But Norse and Arthurian legends are the go-to for mythological lore.

In all the books I've read Fenrir has only popped up once. And I expected him since I was reading a book series featuring Greek and Norse gods.

Personally I just hate when Christianity pops up in any story I'm reading. It's rarely done in a way where I'm actually sympathetic to the character's mindset. They're either a hayseed, narrow minded, ignorant, or the religious dogma becomes a cureall for whatever comes their way. Only rarely does it help flavor an interesting character.

No surprise on that one. Christianity is kinda fucked up.

Fenrir... eh. If its a wolf its a Fenrir, but thats partially because the wolf has to be awesome and a base wolf isnt exactly intimidating in a world with magic. Dragons on the other hand are base badass.

For me, it's The 7 Sins. They're just so overused. I really hate it when an author is developing his own unique take on devil cultivation, then ruins it by forcing the 7 Sins into it. Even when they don't really mesh and the system they were building worked just fine without them, the author just has to drag the 7 Sins into it!

Umu. I'd like to see a novel that takes the 7 sins and runs with the idea in an interesting way. usually, as you say, the author just tosses them in for no reason.

Dragons and Minotaurs and such are more generalized legends, Fenrir however is a named legend like Laevatein and Bahamut.
