A friend of mine actually translated Ch. 136 for me (warning: obviously includes spoilers since it's a much later chapter). Just in case for those who need their dose of Shadow overlord shenanigans.

The series was licensed.. or atleast the author is working on the light novel version and volume 1 was already out on amazon.
Usually the author was told to either slow down the web novel or delete it completely.

There's more. Licensing into various local languages, and including when the works gets adaptation based on the published works, etc etc. There's loads of revenue based on hard copy and soft copy sales such as joint releases and ads.
My point stands. Overpricing kills development of readership. Or pretty much they kills most developing businesses.

 

You are forgetting demand. You need people that want to license your work.
You seem to be overestimating the profit margin of the publishing industry.
It is one of the lowest profit margin businesses.
For every Game of Throne, there are 1000 failures.
Also, popularity does not usually translate into purchases.
Novels popular here are usually because it is free which reduced the barrier of entry.
Yes, the publishing system in Japan is archaic. It punishes authors since they cannot set their prices
and also to an extent publishers since it is possible for bookstores to return 100% of inventory at zero cost.
I keep thinking of the US equivalent with grocery stores where manufacturers like Pepsi stock and restock Walmart shelves themselves but I cannot think of the word.

Although, I want to stress that I am very interested in your input as a budding publisher.
If I can escape the pitfalls of my forerunners then I will gladly do so.
